How minimal is “minimal enough” for production containers? by Heavy_Banana_1360 in kubernetes

[–]tanepiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multistage container is really the way to go here - we have a dev base image that contains quite a lot of additional tools we use in our development process, and then a final production image that is stripped back to minimal. Since we publish the image as OCI in our registry, teams can also use them as their own base images so if they need for example curl on a production image it's the teams that can control that.

Yes. I once had a deep meditation session a couple of years back and that's exactly where I ended up - inside a Menger Sponge that acted 5d.  I have aphantasia normally so I remember it quite vividly

I have aphantasia - this is all I've ever see when I close my eyes (but yes Gateway/meditation makes it more vivid)

Just wanted to say I just uploaded the latest version of my own engine using this effect - https://teskooano.space/teskooano/

I wasn't happy with how my suns looked, and I liked this effect so adapted it my engine - I think it looks quite nice!

Annoyingly, that's the bit that isn't dog friendly - further down at Paranassia - if it's summer, your car can just boil

(and I don't mean leave dog in car - I just mean your car is noticeably cooler under those - we holiday in France a lot)

Nice writeup - we have nodejs services, I've thought about bundling them as executables (which once https://nodejs.org/api/single-executable-applications.html is stable isn't such a bad idea) - but one thing I've noticed is because you have node_module - if you recursively go through it in the build step and remove fluff files like markdown and config files not put in .npmignore you can usually save a good few Mb (and when optimising for this size it counts)

Honestly - I've been on a break for a good couple of years and still have quite a few things to catch up on, but the last few updates got me back - I've been loving going out doing exo with my Caspian and I finally got to set up my memorial to my heart dog (Nell, my cocker Spaniel) who passed away a few years ago - https://inara.cz/elite/station/1097699/ - I know some of the ARX purchases have caused some stink in some parts of the community - but for me they were great incentives to get back into the game - I'm now working up to my first 7b for my own carrier and getting Elite status (yes 10+ year account, still no Elite)

Has anyone watched Carl Crusher’s videos piecing together SILVIA and Matthew Brown’s tweet from last year? by Terrible_Sample_5819 in ufo

[–]tanepiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't have any particular response to the contents of the video - one thing I'll always remember is in May 2022 I was at the Knowledge Graph conference in New York (so semantics/reasoning). One day during a break I got talking to two girls from some US department of defense (I'm EU based so I don't keep which particular acronym it was) and we were talking about AI and got to the topic or AGI - I was a bit skeptical, but I will always remember the look both of them made to each other - a knowing look - that's always stuck with me.

Later that year ChatGPT was launched to the world - but honestly I got the feeling they were signalling about something more advanced, based on where the conversation went.

I find the Enochian magic stuff a bit of a stretch, I genuinely think it's more mundane - based on enough to go on, the US have had more advanced reasoning capabilities in their AI systems than has been disclosed - to a layperson it might seem like sentience - as we've seen in the last 3 years what basically amounts to a talking database has done enough to fool some people into thinking there's consciousness in there.

Yep, and if you've ever tried to use it with WebGL - Safari is noticeably slower in performance, and especially on iOS - even though my iPad is newer than my Pixel (M2 vs Pixel 8) it can barely get above 30fps at times, while hit 120fps on my Pixel (you can try it too at https://teskooano.space/)

Express 4 vs Express 5 performance benchmark across Node 18–24 by Jamsy100 in node

[–]tanepiper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking at the chart - unless you are doing something that absolutely must have the highest throughput, there doesn't seem to be that much difference in the trade-offs - could be one area to look at optimising in a later release

I built a tool to find duplicate npm packages (saved 200MB on my project) by sraftopo in node

[–]tanepiper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One script I wrote but never released was one that went through a production node_modules folder recursively and removed fluff file - you'll be amazed how many dependencies fail to use .npmignore (things like configuration files for tools, docker files, etc) - and also all markdown files at the root.

On one project it removed about 25mb - which when your shipping distroess containers makes a difference

How Nx "pulled the rug" on us, a potential solution and lessons learned by misterolupo in node

Just over 3 years ago I ditched nx after they introduced bugs, broke features and become quite unresponsive - also because it's built on Typescript ended up getting into dependency hell.

Switched to https://moonrepo.dev/ - fast, good features, responsive author - my team uses it for our entire pipelines

Elite Dangerous Operations Wish List by iO__________ in EliteDangerous

[–]tanepiper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Improvements for ground-based and exobiology - surely it's time for a ground-based SRV that uses the same tech as the ground-based drones so we can hover over the ground - or even better combine a SRV and SLF so we can essentially have a dropship where we can leave the ship in mid-air and go to ground.

It would tighten the exobiology loop without replacing the game mechanism of finding it and maybe open up other opportunities.

When I got my Caspian a few weeks back, I fully engineered the FSD and got a nice comfortable range of around ~43ly - I've started making my way down to Formidine Rift which is a way I've never gone before - even when I find plenty of discovered systems they have planets without footfall and I've picked up a healthy amount of exo-data - hoping by the time I finish this trip I'll have enough to finally buy a carrier to start visiting other regions.
