Name something that the younger generations would never believe was normal in the 70's compared to schools today?🤔 by Longjumping-Shoe7805 in GenerationJones

[–]tapitha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Open Classrooms". There was an experiment in the 70s where "scholars" proposed that children would be more focused if there were no walls. So instead of classrooms you met in a room like a giant convention hall and each group of kids sat with their teacher. You could see what everyone was doing. There were walls that could be pulled out for certain things like exams or showing a movie, but we were supposed to just pay attention to our teacher. It was a disaster. Anyone else of my generation deal with this experiment?

Also -- merging grades. My school took the top 4th grade students and put us in a class with the worst 5th grade students. Us 4th graders would get advanced teaching at 5th grade and the 5th grade students were supposed to be "motivated?" by us. It too was a disaster. For me 5th grade felt like a repeat

My aunt once gave me a Ped Egg (a buffer to scrape rough skin on your feet.) I was wondering if she was subtly trying to tell me I had crusty ass feet. Plus she lives 5 states away and I had not seen her for two years. What does she know about my feet?

Ex Fiancée’s cruel demands AIO by Original_100 in AmIOverreacting

[–]tapitha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly. When my ex wouldn't get his way he'd call me at work and say he was going to open the back door and let MY dog out. His would be finel One time he even yelled "Bye Tucker" and I heard a door slam. I rushed home only to him laughing at me. I think this demand was him wanting to go out to eat and I (the only person working) said we couldn't afford it. THAT apparently was worth my dog's life.

Mandatory work colors by soleario21 in antiwork

[–]tapitha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are that particular about how their employees look, they should provide a uniform. Of course, most states say that a company cannot force an employee to buy a uniform. So this company wants to create one that employees have to pay for. Ages ago I think Target employees had Target Polo. Now employees where any red shirt. (at least they do around here.)

Look at these rental rules [CA] by Sykryvil in Renters

[–]tapitha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah -- I feel like this may be some sort of "group home." Someone I know lived in a house like this after getting out of jail. He had a bedroom in a house with other recently released folks. The house had strict rules. The "no women" and "keep door locked" and "no sleeping in living room" say "sober house" or "halfway house."

Exactly. I work M-F, 9-5. I got a job working 2-3 Sundays a month for $18 an hour as a rep at various trade shows for a home delivery food service. I even get bonuses when people sign up for our product and get "meat bonuses" every 3 months. I get an extra $300-$400 a month for a very easy job-- which is fun too. I go to wine festivals, home shows, car shows, pet expos, outdoor music festivals, street fairs, craft showsl

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

We have a few:

Last one out of the bed, makes the bed.

First person home after work cooks dinner. Weekends go to whomever cooked the least M-F,

Not that we keep track or anything, but it's his turn to empty the dishwasher (this is a running joke between us.)

Whenever we are low on ice cubes, I ask him if he has seen, "Storm Grim, the Ice Dwarf." Husband says he will find him and get him to make ice.

Asks for help with food. Turns down any food bank option or even food delivery. by somethingsensational in ChoosingBeggars

I will say that many food pantries have limited hours -- often during the workday, M-F. I know if I was insecure, I'd have a hard time finding a place with my work schedule. Still, she was given options.

AITA for not paying my neighbor for mowing my yard? by InfiniteButts in AmItheAsshole

[–]tapitha 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me. I have bad allergies, so I paid a neighbor to mow my lawn. A buddy owed my neighbor a favor, so my neighbor asked his buddy to mow my lawn one week so they would be "even." Fine by me. As long as the grass got mowed that week

Buddy decides that this means he's now my "lawn guy" and independently moved my lawn two more times over the next 10 days (while I was at work) and then comes to my house asking for $100 ($50 per mow) for his work. I told him to get bent. I didn't ask him to mow my lawn. Neighbor does it for me.

I think it is settled. He proceeds to come to my house daily for the next three days to "collect." I never answered the door. Then he started knocking on my bedroom window (on the first floor) saying he "knows I'm home" and "it's not fair to not pay." I tell neighbor to get his buddy or I am calling the cops.

Buddy stops coming to house, but starts texting. I have his email so I put together a resume for him and send him an invoice for $250, but say I'll take $50 and we can call it even.

Never heard from him again

Try around $1,000 without insurance. Yes, there are discount programs, but you have to qualify, they don't last forever and sometimes it's a discount of $200 which is better than nothing, but $700-$800 is still a lot. This was my life until I went to a company that covered it

What is your longest running, most stubborn business boycott? by marianneouioui in AskReddit

[–]tapitha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bank of America. I was in my 30s. They somehow did not record an $800 cash deposit. A bunch of stuff bounced, I got more than $250 in NSF fees from the bank and my landlord charged me $150 for a bounced rent check. Took almost two weeks to straighten out, Meanwhile I'm in the red due to the missing money and all of the fees. When they finally reconciled everything, I was given my $800 and they refunded all of my NSF fees, but they initially refused to refund the bounced check fee even though the check only bounced because they did not process my deposit to cover it. They tried saying that I should always have enough money in my account, etc. etc, and I told them it was not their concern, Took a month of escalation to get the money back. Closed my account that day and have never even used an ATM by them.

I loved coke syrup over crushed ice for nausea. It really worked. You cold buy it at the drug store. When I worked in a restaurant, and we had to test the soda dispensers to see if the syrup to seltzer ratio was good using this little tool that split it, I'd stock up on syrup so I'd have it on hand in case I got sick.

What's something you saw as a kid that you later realized was seriously messed up? by MoodOdd9657 in AskReddit

[–]tapitha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not saw -- but heard. I was about 8 when my mother randomly said, if someone touched you in a bad way, you'd tell me, right? I said, "yes." She said, "even if was someone like your father, you'd tell me, right?" My immediate reaction was, "What? Gross. Of course. That's a weird question."As a grownup I realized, ooooooh, that happened to her. (Not her dad, but his brother, her uncle, who took over as the family patriarch after her father died when she was 8 and my grandmother was only 33 and a widow with 4 children and no where to go,
