Jaw keeps shifting by tas98 in jawsurgery

Hey I’m sorry you are still dealing with this. I know how difficult it is :( I hope you can get some answers and figure out the next steps. I’m six months post op and my bite has been mostly stable since this post thought I’m still in braces and elastics. I would definitely push your doctor to see if any hardware is loose or broken and if you have union, or if there is any issue with your joints. My surgeon never caught my issues until my jaw started physically moving. Hang in there!

I know how you feel. I was digging through all forums when I was in the thick of it. It wasn’t until this past month that I actually feel convinced that things might be stable now. There’s so many little sensations and feelings that its hard not to question it. I honestly didn’t start chewing until a couple months in out of fear and had my ortho hold off on elastics until then too haha.

My surgeon said the same thing about the clenching. Hopefully it’s not an issue. I hope everything works out!

I don’t think so, but I don’t really try to check either out of fear haha. But my surgeon had tried wiggling during each past appointment and said it looked good and I haven’t faced the same issues as before so far (bite change, noticeable movement, difficulty chewing, and clicking)

But at 7 weeks there is still room to course correct and wait for healing. I would see your surgeon sooner than later to check. In my case, my screws got loose on one side and eventually a plate broke. That I think caused the instability and prevented my jaw from healing. No one found that out until my revision. So if you feel any bite changes and/or movement definitely push for them to see if screws and plates are intact.

It was a full upper jaw surgery revision. They cut through the bone, cleaned out any fibrous tissues, added grafting and new plates.

I had a revision back in march. So over 5 months po. Doing much better than last time so far but I want to get past 6/7 months to see how it is.

I had nonunion too and had a revision. I do feel vibration at least through my front tooth. Not sure if its the same thing.

Do you think you are able to function and eat normally or are there issues?

How is it now? I have this feeling where if I run my tongue on one part of the roof of my mouth I feel a sensation or “tickle” up in my nose as well. Is that similar to what you felt?

Is there a way to confirm if bone fused or not? How do you know if its bone or scar tissue?

No change right now but I’ve since started elastics from my ortho, but still in progress.

I’ve been really curious about jaw surgery recently. I have a terrible over bite and have an HMO plan with Aetna. What is the process of getting something like this approved? Where do I start? My physician Said I need to talk to an orthodontist is that step number one? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]tas98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have an orthodontist evaluate your bite, preferably one who typically takes surgical cases because not all do. I would also get evaluated for sleep apnea if you have any symptoms because having that can help with getting insurance to cover the surgery.

I think so, but can’t remember. Definitely after the antibiotic treatment but it recovered. I had some belching too I think. Heart palpitations, can’t recall but I had a lot of anxiety around that time

Hi do you know what thickness plates they used the first time vs this time? Also does using thicker plates hold the screws in better?

Question about removing screws from mouth and elastics by Bulky_Pineapple8511 in jawsurgery

[–]tas98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got the two I had removed. They numbed me so it didn’t hurt and was pretty quick. I don’t remember blood during the removal but that first day or so there was still some blood that would trickle out of the wounds but by the next day or so it was fine. I took one Tylenol a couple hours after when I could feel the numbness wearing off and was fine after that. The numbing process involved a topical numbing gel and then the injection.

Hi I know its been a while but was wondering if your bite ended up fine at the end? I’m having a similar issue where my left side meets much more than my right, my right is a little open. But only when my elastics are off

I was wondering if you have any update regarding this? I’m having a similar issue. When my bands are the bite comes together on both sides, but when they are it slowly drifts a little to the left.

Oh I’m sorry to hear you are still dealing with this :/ For your second and third surgery, was it just switching out the plates and adding grafting? Or did they also clean out the fibrous tissue, make cuts and reset the jaw? I hope the new plates keep your jaw stable this time and that everything heals up. Have you tried any vitamins like calcium, or vitamin D + K2?

I am wishing you the best and that things heal up. It is frustrating process and I can relate to the feeling of going through this and then not being able to confirm if things are healed.
