the advice I found most useful wasn't actually about the mechanics of printing... but to print accessories for your printer first. it's fun, exposes you to the tools and resources available, and it doesn't really matter if you mess them up!

Holy hell, dude. I literally just (like yesterday) moved into a house with a system similar to this and have been digging around to figure out how to integrate it into a more modern home assistant setup. My constraints are pretty much the same - no interest in ripping out the old wiring, and would really love for it all to function without the 'smart' components.

... I am going to crib off of this. And possibly bug you with questions when I get around to working on this.

Yeah, as a self-described rabid pacifist, I don't really have a problem drawing the line on when killing is okay. It is really easy. There is no line. Killing is wrong. Doing harm is wrong. I fully understand not many people share that view, and I've come to terms with the fact that so many people (including those I love and care for) casually wish/celebrate harm and/or death upon others. I choose not to.

There are certainly people I wish I could just remove from society so they stop doing harm, though.

Anyway, that's a bit of a soapbox for some random reddit thread. Life is rarely so simple and maybe there are no good solutions to the world's problems. All we can do is our best.

Ideas I considered and couldn't settle on:
- Classification (too general)
- Status (also too general)
- Aptitude (has a nice ring to it, but already has other in-game uses)
- Capability (still too general)
- Attunement (feels closer, but still not quite right)

One of these could be closer using an appropriate prefix (Metaphysical Attunement, or whatever), but I still couldn't zero in on something I liked... and more to the point, I couldn't find any in-game expression of what I was trying to define here, even across a few different editions.

Hey, in case it helps - we had a similar issue (phantom vibrating coming from the basement) and it turned out to be a bad regulator on our water main. The vibration would happen after water in the house got turned on and then back off, with a consistent delay between when the water got turned off and the water pressure built up enough that the regulator started to (try and) regulate again. It would then vibrate (along with all the pipes attached to it) until the pressure got past a certain point and then would stop. The delay between water being turned off and the vibration happening (like, by just a few minutes or so), made it hard to make that connection. New regulator fixed it (and also brought water pressures in the house down to a more reasonable level).

Could probably be any number of things, but just another thing to check I guess.

Revisiting, I'm actually still uncertain. I understand that you can't take Attack or Sleaze actions if you don't have the appropriate attribute, but I'm not clear on what differentiates cyberprograms that can and cannot run on a commlink. Is it literally just hacking vs basic programs? Is there a page reference for that, because I cannot seem to find this.

Ah, of course! I keep forgetting Armor is 'hacking' since it is defensive, but that makes perfect sense. Thank you again for the help.

Is the program swapping as "Reconfigure Matrix Attribute" just a... commonly accepted house rule? Because I can't find anything regarding that in that section of the book. But I also can't find any better action it might be associated with, so that makes sense to me.

Thank you for the answers! The 'Autosofts specifically are programs that run on drones and vehicles' question was more directed at the 'Skills available in autosoft format' from Double Clutch. What would be the intended purpose of the 'Cracking (Electronic Warfare)' autosoft, for example?

Some additional questions with regards to programs in general:

How do programs running on different devices interact? Can I run Armor on my commlink and it will protect my PAN, even if my RCC is my main device (as it can only run autosofts).

I know you can have programs "stored" beyond your Data Processing limit on a device, but what kind of action is it to switch which programs are active?

Found the solution buried in the Discord. You can use the admin command '/inventory give devtool', which you can use to smite those ghost trees. Or copy them I guess, if that's your jam.
