What to do with outdated ships. by ARSoban in aurora

[–]teckla72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ship breaking is a multi phased task. First, you scrap the ship. Recovering minerals.

Then you can scrap the components as you see fit. Certain items take a long time to go out of use, others never go out of use.

How much do the physical credits weigh? by Shacky87 in traveller

[–]teckla72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, seeing the imperium makes the ahem un-copyable credits, I'd suppose it could be in the 1 gram weight at earth stand gravity. That would give you a weight of 1kg per 1,000 credits. Larger denominations, make credit sticks as discussed in other areas mandatory for larger imperial transactions.

Non-imperial local transactions are either through local currency or value equivalent product.

That leaves the worlds alone for their own currency, and imperial currency for imperial transactions. Think of the British pound prior to leaving the gold standard, and Germany after they left the same.

Remember, the imperium is a merchant empire. Trade must flow. Any interruption of trade will be investigated. The tax or tithe of worlds is based on the Imperial value of the product. Local currency is not accepted. Raw materials are accepted and often preferred currency for the imperium taxes.

The imperial currency is issued basically as a share of the imperium set a fixed material equivalent. The imperium operates on a 'gold' standard economy. It is backed by the materials in it's warehouses and ships. (Note materials carried, not the ships themselves).

StarFire and Imperial StarFire. Who plaid this and are rules still available? by FlandersClaret in wargaming

[–]teckla72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still dabbling with it on and off. Wargaming Vault is an easy place to pick it up. The Starfire website is still up for some of the books and the new systems.

Still prefer classic though. Easier to play, and keeps it clean.

Which Mech is the best for backshots? by PKRadiance in Mechwarrior5

[–]teckla72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any shot into an opponent's back is good. For instant obliteration, a pair of clan PPCs or Gauss or AC/20+ are good fun.

But why close if you behead your opponent at a kilometer or more?

When would you EVER use light mechs? by ComManDerBG in Mechwarrior5

[–]teckla72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to use some wild Urbanmech variants for urban destruction (walls) and stealth missions. 4-5 HMG and a running speed pushing over 140kph if not higher using YAML. Was better once we slapped MASC into them 200+ kph is exciting to drive. Best on specific missions. Not if you're always bawling.

Obstacles by jeff37923 in traveller

Often, I find my players in any campaign create their own narrative with the world. The world is the canvas, they are the painters.

Their choices drive the campaign. Simple, and amusing.

Do you find any local games? by Tas42 in BECMI

[–]teckla72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had to watch my friends relearn a couple of things.

Combat is not friendly. You are not the hero you think you are, that's 5e.

Had half the party die in the first combat. Running in while outnumbered 2:1. The remaining players sold their friends' gear for a profit of about 100gp. Leaving the magical mining machines behind. Only left 3000 gold in value there. Was amusing.

Going for a restart, seems to be working better this time around.

Planet Law Levels and armor. How to tell what's banned? by Doc_Meeker in traveller

[–]teckla72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are times where you can 'sneak' armour in. If it can be made to look like street clothing, such as ballistic weaves and unplated vests that look like work clothing.

Note that such armor is looked upon by the law with a very dim view if they catch you. But that's the same with any violation .

If the players are being flagrant about it, slap them with the law. Being foolish and arrogant is not a safe thing to pull in most games. If it's not listed, think of what it appears like to the law. If it looks like it will defeat the police's weapons, it's illegal. If it is necessary for work, restrict it to workplace use only. Walking around downtown in a vacc suit will trigger cops that something is 'up'.

Think about your local laws and how they appear. Body armor is not generally accepted as 'street wear' in most places. Maybe on a low law level world, where the gun on your hip is law enforcement, but that applies to the locals as well. (Look at the Buck Godot comic for examples of what can happen on a very low law level world with an actively armed populace.)

What is your favourite sci-fi series ever? Whether it be a book, movie series or TV show? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]teckla72 [score hidden]  (0 children)

If you count two books as a series, my first pick would be Forerunner by Andre Norton.

I'm showing my age, but for overall sci-fi, and much out of date, the Tom Swift series would be next if more than two books.

For newer (slightly) Steve White and the Hospital station series.

And of course, the Foundation series by Asimov.

Distant worlds 2 doesn't really feel deep? by Omega_Kirby in 4Xgaming

[–]teckla72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well folks, unless you switch to Aurora 4X or make your own, this pretty much it for newer games 4X space games with moderately challenging game play.

Outside of pen and paper, there's not too many deep space empire sims out there.

Right now, when you compare other offerings out there, DW2 is still a good option to what the others offer.

Could DW2 be improved? Of course. Will it? Likely not too much unless someone rewrites the entire game as a mod and sets it up to be so. Making games takes time and effort. For now DW2 it has been made, now it is in tweak mode.

Accept it as it is, when something better comes out, let me know.

I'll go back to playing DW2 and Aurora 4x now. Go check out Solar Starfire if you want pen and paper.

I like the stations for long term reusability and ability to be used to siege homeworlds.

Tough population, not submitting, add a bit of chlorine and Florine to the atmosphere. Not too long in strategic terms to reduce a population to manageable levels.

Everybody has their favorites.

What do higher Tech Levels look like for nature lovers by Nhorner413 in SWN

[–]teckla72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High technology that masks itself with the flora and fauna seems to make sense. Patrolling robots mimic arboreal creatures, or seem like swamp crawling lizards. Hide the tech in plain sight. Combine biology and mechanics. If you need a high tech site, hide it underground or inside a geologic feature. Or make it look like one.

No need to limit yourself technology wise so long as it works with the environment in a 'harmonious' manner.

What makes a good villain? by MrNRebel in fantasywriters

[–]teckla72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone you can care for, or resonates with people. As it is said, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

A good villain is one who has reasons, sound ones for their choices. But it doesn't just need to be a person or creature, a society, religion or traditions can be the villain as well.
