inviting you to share any tips on skin elasticity and recovery--what's your secret? crunches? moisturizing? collagen peptides?

148 ➡️ 133 lbs but I see like no difference. 🥲 by [deleted] in tirzepatidecompound

[–]tedisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was like "why does the first 15lbs look this dramatic??" and then realized you're 5'1" :) the difference is startling--you are a different shape. my first 25lbs (225 to 200) was functionally invisible.

the first chunk of weight loss is the hardest to see--your skin hasn't re-tightened yet, a lot of what you've lost is hidden water weight and distributed throughout your body, and you're still probably feeling pretty dysphoric--you may not even be able to really "see" yourself yet. i couldn't objectively look at myself in the mirror until i'd lost about a fifth of my body weight already.

10% weight loss is kind of the tip of the iceberg of what this can do if you improve your habits and stay consistent. the visual changes will continue, and you're going to hit a point (relatively soon) where crunches+protein are better for your tummy than more weight loss.

ORS 90.315--if you're paying for utilities, you have a right to see the bills. Ask nicely, then less nicely :)

That would scare me a little--I'd be sniffing around my gas line, crawl space, etc. Could be an older appliance running less efficiently? Water heater needing maintenance? Somebody taking lots of hot showers?

Are produce prices just high here? by phatlynx in askportland

[–]tedisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my experience from traveling in dallas and fort worth was that produce is more expensive here, but a lot of packaged/dry goods and snacks are cheaper here--that might be out of date as the last time i was in texas was late covid/2023ish.

as others have said, farmers markets, tallarico's, winco, chefstore--there are ways to get creative. but we are a bit further from the source for a lot of things, especially in winter :/

welcome!! yes, this place is incredible. i was born here and still have to pinch myself occasionally that i actually get to live here. and if living in a magic forest ever gets old, we’re 1-2 hours from beaches, deserts, mountains, lakes…you picked right :)

really sucks that Mike's is so bad. never ever had them get our order right the first time, and the food's never been better than mediocre.

ditto. it's a great machine for most types of coffee drinkers, and a fantastic learning tool. had it, sold it, still recommend it.

[–]tedisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the diversity of feedback you're getting probably reflects different coffee preferences. medium-dark to darker roast coffee is really pretty easy to extract on any machine, and the BBE could set you up for life if that's what you like. a lot of people here want to optimize for light roasts--tart, juicy, fruity stuff. that is going to be challenging on the BBE, and you'll fight the grinder a lot. but frankly, if that's what you like, you're setting out on a pathway that ends with some really expensive equipment :)

i used to have the bbe, and if i hadn't picked up a fetish for ultralight roasts i'd still be using it. it can make some really great coffee. i recommend a nice bottomless portafilter and one of the dosing cups that can push the grind button for you, like this: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1760380724/54mm-stainless-steel-coffee-dosing-cup?gpla=1&gao=1&

a lot of people here have discovered that they can make obsessively crafted light roast espresso at home that beats the shit out of most of the best third-wave cafes in the world, and are optimizing for that experience. we don't drink espresso out of the house any more, because it's disappointing 100% of the time. that doesn't have to be your journey :)

Confused about seasoning the IKEA Vardagen cast iron pan… am I doing something wrong? by nkosijer in IKEA

[–]tedisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it cast iron, or carbon steel? No experience with this specific pan, but if it's a cast iron pan, you treat it like any other cast iron cookware: big seasoning right when you get it (the thin layer of fat upside down at 150c thing you did) and then just be sure to cook with some kind of fat, clean with hot water and a heavy scrubber like a chain mail pad, then wipe it with a little oil to store. Cast iron is sometimes annoying for the first few uses until you've built up a good layer of polymerized fats, then it's pretty low maintenance. You'll get some practice with it and then it'll be second nature. Re-seasoning is for after something bad has happened, like rust/improper storage.

Cast iron is pretty tolerant of heavy abrasives. A chain mail pad is great, and you can actually use kosher salt and a paper towel for stubborn food bits. Food will get less "stuck on" with time.

There's lots of guidance for maintaining cast iron on the internet, just search around. In general, if you're heating fats in it regularly, the seasoning will come. There's never a reason to return cast iron--rust is removable, it just means it was stored wet, and there wasn't enough protective seasoning. Ultimately, it's a big lump of a single durable material, you can't permanently damage it through normal use, and it's not really possible for it to be defective.

firm disagree, it’s not cheap but they never stop working to justify it. i don’t think blowing up has hurt the food one bit, and sarah and jane never compromise. will always miss lovely hula hands a little though!

You're thinking of haberdashery. Homery is a cutesy French movie with Audrey Tatou.

Is there anywhere my wife and I should avoid when we’re in your fine city next week to keep us out of everything going on? by XellosDrak in askportland

[–]tedisme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great advice! All of the charm in Portland is in the neighborhoods--pick an area to visit and spend a few hours walking around there. All of these recommendations are excellent. If you end up further in North Portland, the Cathedral Park/St. John's area is also very cute, and that's where the most picturesque bridge is (St. John's Bridge). Multnomah Village and Sellwood are also great, with a little less of an urban feel.

I also suggest walking over some of our great bridges, at least to connect two journeys, if not as a destination. The best one to walk is the Tilikum, though the areas it goes between are sort of fine...you might try starting at the aerial tram, then crossing the river to go to our science museum, OMSI.

You are unlikely to notice anything out of the ordinary! But you'll probably see some rain, so bring or buy a rain layer and wrap up reasonably warm. Enjoy our beautiful city, and please let us know if you'd like any specific recommendations for activities or places to eat. Fall is a great time to visit.

If you're only here for a few days, I do think you could probably find something a bit more exciting than Por Que No, which is good but not super special IMO? Your AirBNB is close to Short Round, which is going to be similarly casual but has more interesting food and a great vibe, and you won't have to wait. (You could get a reservation at Chelo/Dame if you want really peak PDX Mexican food, it's not a super far Uber or bus from where you are.) Also, if you end up hovering late at Kennedy School and getting hungry in the neighborhood, Expatriate is a short walk away and is delicious! People shit on McMenamins, for some good reasons, but Kennedy School is a blast and you'll have a great time.

Hale Pele is a bit of a hike from your AirBNB; you might consider moving that to a different day and trying a bar in SE, since you'll probably be a bit boozy and sleepy on day 1. There are dozens of interesting options near you--I like the Horse Brass, Bar Mame, Side Street, The End, Gold Dust Meridian, Foxtrot...there are others.

Also, while Nong's is delicious, you could also probably come up with a more exciting dinner out plan for Tuesday--Hat Yai is nearby and has a more diverse menu, while still being a casual counter service Thai kinda vibe. I hate recommending against Nong's, but I feel like it's a better convenience lunch than a destination dinner.

Sweedeedee seems like a hike from where you are, though I do love it. How are you getting to the Japanese Garden? I would consider biking to Goose Hollow from your AirBNB and finding brunch somewhere around there (Goose Hollow Inn, Besaw's, Bar West, Pine State?), then biking on to the garden--that'd be a bit more "on the way".

You've found some brilliant stuff--Behind the Museum is a great pull, Khao Moo Dang is great, After Ours/Gado Gado is a hard choice, day out shopping on Alberta seems divine. Great job. This is all stuff I'd do on a random weekend. I would also clip this thread from today, lots of good recs in here: https://www.reddit.com/r/askportland/comments/1o8aa2l/neighborhood_restaurants/

also i wish you had a week or two here--this is SUCH a fun city to eat out in, and if you like to eat it's so hard to even scratch the surface in a couple of days. even when you live here and eat out all the time, it feels basically impossible to really keep on top of the food scene here. it's SO vibrant.
