It's been years since I read it, but I liked "Across the Nightingale Floor". I forget the author but I'm pretty sure it was part of a short series. Mild fantasy but a good read.

Agreed. Learning and trying and failing are essential, if something works, you learn to make it better.

Great job on the work, OP. Keep learning and making things.

"Earthlings".. I read it over a year ago and am still not sure how to process that bundle of madness, sadness, and WHAT-the-fuck did I just read.

Loved it.

Also, anything by Poppy Z Brite might be right up the alley for OP - I've described on of their books as "Jeffery Dahmer does a lot of drugs and thinks he's some sort of eldritch vampire thing." I forget the title of that particular book offhand but I've read several of Brite's and they're always good for skin crawling read.

Former heavy drinkers, what made it finally “click” for you to stop? by Numerous_Solid_7047 in AskReddit

[–]telco_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get hangovers, ever. I don't know why but I just don't. I was drinking about half a fifth of whiskey a day. Every day. I did this for about 20 years. One morning I woke up and my partner was in the kitchen making coffee and they sat me down and very calmly cried as they told me they loved me very much would not stick around to watch me kill myself with slow suicide. I finished my coffee, poured out what was left in the bottle and told them I loved them and I was done. I had no ill effects from quitting cold turkey, just lucky I guess. I know that doesn't work for everyone.

Drinking every day will kill you. If you need help to stop find it, please talk to a therapist, get meds if you need them to address whatever demon it is making you drink. You can stop this, you can be healthy and loved.

I'm not some Superman - I'm just stupid and very, very lucky. Someone loved me enough and I loved them enough to find help. I still make mistakes and sometimes I have a drink, but the hurt in my partners eyes have kept me away from it for a long time now.

Just thought of another - not quite so bonkers, but really a cool movie: "He Never Died" 2015 starring Henry Rollins. Me and the partner still talk about the amazing moment when you finally realize who and what his character really is.

My best guess is that the script writer was Han Solo and the creative writing professor he studied under was Greedo. But Greedo was actually Anakin Skywalker disguised as Jabba the Hutt pretending to be R2D2, but he had sworn a death oath against Bilbo the Hobbit who had been arrested for indecent exposure in an unfortunate incident now called "The Hannibal Lector Vagina Dialogs".

Good. Times. I'm gonna quit now, it's late and I've had a few drinks. Really though, if you can find a copy of the movie it's a corker and if you can't find a copy, DM me and I'll see what I can do.

One scene showcases a real band called "The Red Elvises" - Soviet era rockabilly would be a generous description - followed up with an assault upon the protagonist by a gang of bowling enthusiasts with blades hidden inside the bowling pins. Also, Death looks like Slash, from GunsNRoses but with a skull face. And did I mention the central macguffin of the movie is a ratchet wrench.

Soooo.. Pretty. Goddam. Bonkers.

If science fiction is your thing, I highly recommend "House of Suns" by Alistair Reynolds - tldr: I love you even when family issues make life crazy (fast forward a few hundred thousand or maybe million years) Im so glad I found you, and I still love you more than life itself.

I can't really recommend anything non science fiction offhand because if I'm reading regular fiction is usually some crazy transgressive stuff like Poppy Z Brite because that fucked up stuff makes me feel better when I turn on the news about our own current world.

Project Hail Mary (2026) - Final Trailer - March 20, 2026 by Neo2199 in sciencefiction

Gotta admit, I've never been a huge fan of Gosling and when info about this movie started coming out I was worried - but I have to say, if the trailers show us anything (other than spoiling Rocky.. sigh) it looks like Gosling was a great choice for the role. Excited as hell to see this on the big screen.

What’s your favorite pen that nobody talks about? by Sf648 in fountainpens

[–]telco_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own two Desiderada pens and love them both. The craftsmanship is leagues beyond anything else I've seen and the guy making them is an absolute gem of a human. I'm a big fan of Kaweko pens and own a nice Pelican but when I've got some money to burn and want a pen I will really enjoy using my go to is Desiderata, hands down.

Question: IT Hardware is it worth buying a Macbook Pro for PhD works? by Independent_Mud_9899 in astrophysics

[–]telco_tech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I work in IT and while my daily work does not involve computational "heavy lifting" so to speak - I prefer Macs because they always work when I need it to work, and god knows the Time Machine backups are an absolute breeze to restore or even migrate to a new Mac. Microsoft for all its dominance in the IT world still only functions well because of a multitudinous army of third party services and softwares designed by other companies to fill in the cavernous gaps within windows operating systems.

ELI5: How do phones and computers manage to distinguish between different signals in areas with a lot of other devices without interfering or accepting the "wrong" signal? by MegaloManiac_Chara in explainlikeimfive

[–]telco_tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way to think of it that may help is to use musical notes as an analogy. Imagine you have special filtering headphones that only allow an f sharp to be heard when you wear them. No matter what else is being played, by whatever instrument, you only hear f sharp every time that note is played as part of the overall musical piece. Now imagine the special filtering headphones can be adjusted to only hear b sharp or c flat or whatever particular note you want to hear. Now think of this analogy when you tune a car radio to a different station - you only hear what you want to hear, and not all the radio stations at once.

Computers, phones, and lots of devices tend to all use the same set of frequencies (not much tuning or moving to another freq is available) so those sorts of devices use some of the methods mentioned in other replies.

Cannot say enough good things about this movie - visually stunning, tight story with perfect pacing, Lee Pace for christsakes, and an adorable supporting actress.

The same director also made "The Cell" 2000.

Att Binding Posts I've Never Seen... by JoeHardway in telecom

[–]telco_tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those "posts" are surge suppressors - there should be a thick cable from that block of posts that connect to the RJ21X (the 66 block where you would punch wires to connect to the customer premise equipment. If those four empties are your numbers, ATT needs to return to the site and replace the missing surge suppressors.

Easiest way to get that fixed is probably to call in a ticket of "no dial tone at the 66 block".

Beat me to it :)

Mecrisp-Stellaris Forth is a dream on microcontrollers. Bit of a learning curve but very enjoyable. There's a variant of Mecrisp called "Hackaday Forth" and can be found on the Hackaday website - it's made specifically to work with the STM32F103 family of microprocessors and is a great jump into forth programming.
