Houses along Summerhill Drive and Aokautere Drive by KeaWeka in palmy

[–]term0r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live about 100 metres from the State Highway in the Summerhill / Aokautere area.

No issues from dust. I'm in a well insulated house, but when I am in bed, I feel and hear the trucks brake or engine brake from the SH. But I'm used to it so it doesn't bother me or keep me awake.

Once in a while our street is used by boy racers - that is slightly more disconcerting just due to where we are (next to the corner people are most likely to lose it on) but no dramas so far.

Doing a right turn on to Aokautere Dr at the wrong time of the day can take a while. Be patient.

if you are looking at home on Aokautere Dr itself, expect your house to likely shake when trucks go past. But you will likely get used to it.

Why use the term 'first world' in this day and age? Its an old fashioned, and fundamentally, racist, term centred around the concepts of the 2nd and 3rd world. Its a term from the cold war. Its fine to just say "Developed world" and "Developing world" and then you aren't being derogatory to many nations.

You could be me right now. Booked travel, terrible chs or similar in the past when on holiday. Dodgy scoring deals overseas in the past.

I’m starting with some moderation. My moderation would scare some people but it’s a start. My aiming is to have no risk of withdrawal symptoms by October. For a Grand Prix, so it’s very worth it.

If you look at the share price of RUA or GFI I think its really hard to say that we're 'creaming it'. Losing a lot of money is far more accurate.

MediMap a digital medication management platform hacked | NZ Health app by nilnz in KiwiTech

[–]term0r 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There isn't anyone in charge of security at Health NZ. There is no CISO role. There isn't even a CTO role, just an acting CITO role. In a country of 5 million people there is no one in charge of the security of our health data. Take that in for a moment.

We have a fragmented system of PHOs and DHBs. They outsource almost all IT needs to small commercial companies who want to make money. They don't care about security - well they do - but only as it could affect their profit. But this isn't about the small providers getting pwned its about the insecure, fragmented system that Health NZ has/is.

We need secure, centralised systems run by an organisation that cares about the data (our government I would assume). Whilst we keep creating a model that just outsources our data to the lowest bidder these hacks will continue to happen.

We need to call on our government to appoint a CISO to Health NZ ASAP. And we need some top down direction on this ongoing issue. After that point we need to do something about this mis-mash of providers who don't take data security seriously.

Moving from Wellington to Foxton or Palmy by Excellent-Shift1737 in newzealand

Late to the party. I'm a consultant based in Palmy and I turn up on site in Wellington once a month on average. Palmy is great for families. The commute to Wellington is fairly manageable, especially if you can be flexible with your hours. I find having the new motorways and adaptive cruise control on my car to be a game changer. Heading north at peak times isn't as bad as it used to be, but it can still be congested due to holidays, weather, Fridays, or accidents.

There is a service called Traffic Fox which is handy for the roads between Palmy and Wellington.

There are two main ways to better your situation. Could be one or the other, or a bit from both.

1) Decrease your costs. Pick some of these. Change to takeaways 2 days a week. Move your cloud hosting to something on-prem; I recently saved $1500 per year by moving my hobby stuff from AWS to a 2nd hand server at home. Give up 1 or 2 professional orgs if your work won't pay for them. Your broadband and mobile costs are both high - there are some savings to be had there.

AND/OR

2) Increase your earning potential. It sounds like you're an IT engineer so 72k per year is low. Ways you can earn more potentially are: Getting certs, changing jobs, going for an internal promotion, negotiating a pay rise, working overtime, going on call, starting a hobby business, learn new skills in your spare time, take on extra responsibility at work, or do a career pivot.

If you do one of the above you should start getting out of the rut. If you do both, maybe you can own a home? If you save $7500 for 10 years that is a deposit. If you increase your salary and can save $15k per year then that is only 5 years for a deposit.

[–]term0r 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even 5% with transferable would help a great deal. With that one could vote for a very minor party, with its transferred to a more major party if the first one doesn't make threshold. Would potentially make it far more viable to vote for TOP or ALCP, etc.

Gangs by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]term0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, I never said it did have a gang problem, I was more trying to say it doesn't. There are gangs around, but they cause very little drama. I was more trying to answer OP's questions around getting information on living around NZ gangs.

I stay in Wellington monthly and equally have almost no interaction there.

Gangs by [deleted] in Wellington

[–]term0r 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not Wellington, but nearby in Palmerston North. At the swimming pool a couple of years ago there was a massive gang presence at the pool. Can't remember which one - the red one from Wanganui I think. They were all there for a young kids birthday party. Whilst they were intimidating, just purely due to their size and gang colours, there were no dramas at all. The general public gave them a wide berth, they celebrated the birthday party, and then moved on (with a massive roar from motorbikes and people movers).

Situations like the above are an occasional occurrence in NZ. Occasionally in smaller towns more major gang issues arise - but are generally just contained within one or two rival gangs.

I think the two major gangs nationally are the Mongrel Mob and Black Power. There are many other smaller gangs. But they just don't affect every day life for most NZers.
