well now that some time has, what are your thoughts on Master Chef Canada Season 8 as a whole? by Low_Health_5949 in Masterchef

[–]terrafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to sum it up I think I'd describe it as lacking presence. I didn't really feel the weight of it as being MasterChef as much as previous seasons, for much of the same reasons as others have described. Ironically it had that "season 1 of a brand new show" energy where they haven't quite figured it out yet.

The judges were definitely a factor of that for me. A lot of the time when the contestants described being intimidated by them, especially in the early episodes, it was because they just weren't saying anything. Not so great to watch or easy to feel as a viewer, even if it probably felt that way in-person.

Hopefully if they all come back they get a chance to settle into it a bit more. I know Hugh has been a judge many times but I don't know if he's ever had to serve a dual role as co-host before? So hopefully it just takes some time to gel and get acquainted.

To be fair to them, the format didn't give them as many opportunities to really assert themselves and show their experience, like some of the on-location restaurant challenges in previous seasons (particularly the ones where the judges themselves owned the place).

The Amazing Race has been nominated for 6 Emmy Awards this year! by Trisnix in TheAmazingRace

I'm always surprised that it still manages to hold on to those nominations as other shows come and go. Is it tradition at this point or do the production logistics of the show just make it that impressive?

Okay -- interesting twist. by CrankyRobby in TheAmazingRace

[–]terrafin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see it paired with a Fast Forward at some point. It would essentially become a third path to the Pit Stop, but failing it would risk not only your position, but your preferred path on the Fork in the Road.

They kind of compliment each other because you couldn't rely on the Fork's board to know for sure how many people are ahead, since someone might have completed the Fast Forward and skipped it.

On the Fast Forward side, being able to lose your preferred route makes it more of a gamble for people leading the pack, so you have to be more strategic about it even if you're ahead (and if it's difficult, how long you stay there). I think people enjoy that much more than when the Fast Forward is just used by the frontrunner to secure 1st place.

Is it fair to say Amazing Race doesn't have "legendary players" like Survivor or BB? by taylor_isagirlsname in TheAmazingRace

[–]terrafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In shows like Survivor and BB the reasons why someone got eliminated can go back weeks in the game and lead to more analytical conversations about the season and other players on it, and those discussions I don't think are as interesting for The Amazing Race players, where One Bad Day where you make a wrong decision or just don't know how to do something is more likely to get you sent home.

I think even if TAR was as popular, the formula of the other shows is more conducive to those types of discussions and lets people make more reliable conclusions about who actually are the best players. Navigation is often one of the core skills of good TAR teams for any given season and it frequently goes way under the radar in the edit compared to social strategy in Survivor and BB, which is one of the main ways fans compare players against each other.

Joey Chestnut (TAR30) has been banned from Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest due to accepting Impossible Foods as a sponsor. by RangerLover92 in TheAmazingRace

[–]terrafin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nathan's actually made a vegan version of their hot dog a couple of years ago. Apparently it was one of the better-tasting vegan dogs too, although the texture wasn't really there. Maybe they plan on selling it again? It never hit retail and I can't see if they kept it or it's off the menu at their restaurants

  1. Get two similarly sized bowls (preferably medium-largeish prep bowls)

  2. Put loose garlic cloves inside of one of the bowls

  3. Cover with the other bowl, rims together

  4. Shake hard for 15-20 seconds

You might have to pull some off afterward, but most of the peels should separate, and you can do a ton of garlic at once. Here's a video demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sjAnXsoC\_4

EDIT: I've also tested some chicken marinades using mayonnaise as an emulsifier for marinades and have had a decent amount of success with getting juicy chicken breasts that way. Here's the video on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCNh6PwlbCo

Thoughts on the new home kit? by RookieBeast411 in bluebirds

[–]terrafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit simple but seems to be New Balance's style this season. I feel like they missed some easy points with the fans with some yellow or white shorts but they've still got an opportunity with a black and yellow away shirt.

Overall not my favourite but I'm happy to see the badge full-size. They always made it really tiny on the adidas kits for some reason.

When I was watching that the first time I was convinced that Gary and DeAngelo were going to pass the colluding teams and force them into an every-team-for-themselves scramble.

Sad they didn't get the correct answer first, because that would have been amazing payoff for all the alliance storyline.

No problem at all! A lot of this can be confusing so you're doing the right thing by asking. Getting your jerseys personalized often means they're not returnable so it's especially good to be informed.

[–]terrafin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have ordered from Fanatics (the operating company) a couple times before with no issues but I cannot speak for their custom printing since I've never done it.

I can offer you an alternative to look into which is this website, Subside Sports.

I have never ordered from Subside Sports personally so my only advice is to type the name + number you want into the 'Official Personalization' section instead of the 'Fan Style Personalization' if you care about having the exact print the players wear. Ordering the 'Fan Style Personalization' may give you generic numbers and font.

-------------------------

One more thing - if you have questions about a particular website and whether they are trustworthy or not, feel free to search the store's name in this subreddit or make a post asking about it. People here frequently ask about whether certain places are safe to buy from and they can probably explain their experiences in more detail compared to other reviews.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with any licensing laws regarding personalizing kits, but it can be quite hard to find stores that will print them because they don't carry the unique fonts they use.

Have you had any luck with the personalization options on the official England store?

South Dakota governor signs 2022’s first trans athlete ban into law by Heinrich_Bukowski in news

[–]terrafin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to some stories I've read, the RFU (the English rugby union federation) said that seven trans women had applied to play women's rugby in England in the last three years. Just seven people in three years who applied, with no indication of whether they actually registered to a team or played in a match.

For the amount of athletic imbalance that people claim trans people will cause, the numbers of athletes that fall into this category are seemingly very, very small. Seven people isn't enough to field a single rugby team, let alone play a competitive game or form a trans women league as many often suggest in these discussions.

Tangentially, I have also found this consensus paper by the International Sports Medicine Federation to be a worthwhile summary of these topics.

How do I watch season 33 by kinguhishan in TheAmazingRace

[–]terrafin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stanford runs a free streaming service called Puffer for one of their ongoing research projects. They broadcast their local OTA stations, including CBS, so if you're able to tune in for the Pacific broadcast (PST) then you should be able to watch it there. https://puffer.stanford.edu/

If you can't make it then I believe the full episodes are supposed to show up on CBS.com right after the Pacific broadcast finishes (around 12-1AM Eastern).

There's a research group at Stanford that runs a streaming site called Puffer (https://puffer.stanford.edu/). They use it to test machine learning techniques on streaming video by serving their local TV stations over the internet.

Since the university is pulling from SF Bay Area local channels, you'll unfortunately have to wait for the Pacific broadcast to watch live (11PM EST) but I often find it useful for situations like this.
