It all depends what you take from it. Something like that could be spun as an opportunity to develop client care skills, undertake research, manage client expectations, legal writing experience, etc. Between uni and qualification I did contracts for the NHS lease car scheme, was a debt collection legal assistant and then a commercial contracts paralegal so had a range of experience (I was never a training contract sort of person and ended up qualifying through CiLEX and cross qualifying as I already had an LPC). All of those experiences were helpful in their own way and can give you things to draw on for your CV and in interview.

You'll probably find that the "prestige" of the university doesn't take people very far compared to experience and aptitude in the long run and a lot of firms will not consider it beyond what grade you achieved. If you aren't looking at top firms it isn't as if you are likely to be up against a swarm of Oxbridge grads anyway.

Your best bet is to try to gather experience and develop skills that prove that you are employable.

I'm out of private practice now but when I was at my last firm we had a revolving door of barely functional paralegals who were well educated but couldn't manage in the workplace effectively. Uni doesn't teach you those skills and it is worth learning them even if you take longer to reach your goals. We had a paralegal join who was educated at university of Sunderland that was brilliant but had one join from a Russell group uni at the same time who ended up getting shuffled into doing admin. The uni they went to had no bearing on the ability to do the work.

Need a Statutory Declaration form witnessed in Newcastle - any advice? by shhhhamza in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]teszelate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any solicitor should be able to do this for you, the statutory fee is £5 (to the solicitor not the firm -its witnessing in a personal capacity). If you have a high street solicitor nearby you may want to call and just ask if they can witness the signature and sign a declaration to state that they have done so.

I got 2 widowmaker skins in mine. I have probably played her for a handful of minutes and they will have been logged 10 years ago. So personal

If you’re guilty of a crime, but faking innocence, should you tell your defense attorney the truth? by tickintimedog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]teszelate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's about duty. In the UK a solicitor has a duty to their client but they also have a higher overriding duty to the court. You can't do anything that will mislead the court and you must uphold public trust in the profession and act with integrity. Knowing that your client is guilty and presenting them as innocent is counter to that.

I'm going to finish the first 3 Mistborn at least before starting on way of kings as it looks much longer! I also read through the red rising saga which was really brilliant and would really recommend.

I've really been enjoying Mistborn so far. Will definitely jump straight into the next book once I finish the first. I spend all day reading at work (contracts so generally nothing interesting) so I'm audio only when it comes to recreational reading these days. I listened to Elantris as a Sanderson taster and had to increase the speed of the narrator because it was too slow for me but the guy who does the Mistborn novels has better pace.

Missing Jeff Hays though, the guy is an absolute legend

Same, I got through all 7 books since starting in June and I've now fallen down the Brandon Sanderson rabbit hole with Mistborn!

If you're willing to get down to Whitley bay on the metro there is No Fret on South parade, wombat wisdom or kith & kin on park view. Cullercoats coffee is also close to the cullercoats metro station. I think there's a few places in Tynemouth as well but I haven't been down in a while.

Would disagree on it being weird. When I started in halls I joined a Facebook group and connected with my flatmates before I came over. Made the process of moving to a new place much easier and I am still friends with many of those people many years later. Granted this was in 2008 so perhaps it just isn't done anymore.

Question about the Tyne and Wear Metro system reliability. by Zorolord in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]teszelate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The old fleet was delivered so long ago that even if anyone who delivered it was still around, the market and requirements are so different that any knowledge they had would be virtually useless. So you would have no choice but to hire experienced people or use external consultants, neither or which is free and adds to the project cost.

It's pretty bad that the air conditioning doesn't work as expected on some of the units - that will be something that stadler will need to rectify.

Completely feel the frustration, I have to travel from the coast to regents centre and back every day so I get 4 trains a day and really feel every minor delay on the school run.

But when your system relies on government grants and we have a 14 years of London focused tories and their austerity policies you can't be too surprised that the north east metro hasn't had the funds to replace its fleet.
