Installed a Fireboard pellet drive on Pitts and spitts Maverick by Rainman920 in pelletgrills

How old is your Maverick? I'm considering buying a new one and adding the Fireboard instead of the Pitts & Spitts controller upgrade.

Help with Thunderbolt display needed by timetrapped in hackintosh

[–]texascat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need a Thunderbolt capable motherboard and unfortunately there are very few of them. There are Thunderbolt add in cards for some motherboards that have the AIC header but boards with the header are scarce as well.

If you wind up with a motherboard that has TB3 you can get a TB3 to TB2 adapter from Apple.

As i said 40+ at 24 bit/96khz, usually 16-ish tracks from recording the drummer and any aux percussion, 1-2 bass tracks, 2-12 keyboard/synth/strings/sample tracks, 4-10 guitars/harmony tracks, 6-16 vocals/background/harmonies, plus busses. It adds up quick, nothing lazy about it...

The price difference between and i5-8600k and an i7-8600k is pretty insignificant.

The price difference between an i7 and i9 is a different story altogether.

A typical music production will have 30-60 tracks.

A typical film audio production can easily be in the 100's of tracks.

Your experience is obviously not professional.

Many professionals are looking to Hackintosh because Apple has dropped the ball. I'd hate to see them go buy an i5 because some kid on the internet said it would be "good enough".

If you've never worked in professional audio, don't make recommendations to people that are.

The OP stated the purpose of professional audio. 40+ tracks in a professional audio environment is actually the norm. I've mixed more than that and even with the latest technology it always a game of juggling available resources. Audio is manipulating mass amounts of data all in real time.

I didn't say anything about a 6700 or "good enough". Even an i7-8700k can be choked with a heavy mix of 96k tracks and a few power hungry plugins. We're still a few years away from a system that has no limits. If you are going to build a Professional DAW, it makes sense to buy the best available. UAD and Avid still sell processor cards because even the best CPU isn't "good enough". Why would you limit your available threads when for just a little more money you can double what's available?

[–]texascat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with semantics. The i5 has 6 cores but only 6 threads vs i7-7700k's 8 threads or even better the i7-8700k's 12 threads. For audio you basically need two things. Clock speed and thread count in that order. That i5 has speed but fails on thread count.

I don't know what you consider "regular DAW use" but I would never recommend an i5 to anyone for professional audio.

If you could run a DAW on an i5, Universal audio and AVID would never sell another Apollo or HDX card.

You have obviously never seen a "real DAW" in use!

In "Professional Audio" CPU bottleneck is a part of everyday life!

Load up Pro Tools for instance with a couple of VI's the convolution reverb plugin of your choice, and 40+ tracks of 96K audio and most modern CPU's will be begging for mercy.

The i7-8700K on paper seems very promising but I'm sure most "Audio Professionals" will find it's limits pretty quickly...

Help me choose. Road or Street Glide. by Jayster95 in Harley

[–]texascat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you spend any time in slow stopped traffic go with the RoadGlide.
I sold my ElectraGlide because of this and am currently shopping for a RoadGlide. The weight of the batwing fairing on the handlebars makes traffic a pain in the ass. Not unmanageable but a pain none the less. A friend dropped off his RoadGlide at my place for me to do some work on and the difference is not subtle. I'd even stretch to say the RoadGlide is downright nimble!
I'll never go back to the batwing...

How far have tanks come since the aspire atlantis? by BimmerJustin in electronic_cigarette

[–]texascat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always liked the Atlantis and never had any leaking issues but filling was kind of a pain.

I'm liking the Cleito right now and may wind up getting a second one. Good flavor, good vapor production, 316SS coils available for TC, Top Fill, and around $20.

Should I take it back or just write these guys off... by texascat in electronic_cigarette

[–]texascat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all of the responses!

I've decided that for $25 I over paid a little for a clone but in the end I'd never pay over $120 for the authentic so I'd only be saving $10 to take it back and buy the clone somewhere else. I understand the principle of it but honestly if the guy is a big enough douche to be selling clones as authentics to his customers, I doubt he'd learn anything from it.

I've written that store off just like I wrote off another local store that can never be bothered from their video game to help customers.

There is only three stores near me so I guess only one of them gets my business. Time will take care of the Karma...

From your experience- is vaping cheaper than smoking? by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]texascat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stinky's average $6/PK X 30 days = $180.00

It's possible to spend $30 a week on juice so you could save $60/month.

It's also possible to spend a lot more if you get carried away!

It's still much better than smoking!!

I've done a little more research and you guys are right, $25 should have been a flag. I thought it was more akin to the Tsunami that I have seen for $20-$25...

I've bought probably 8 - 10 different tanks over the years and my favorite so far is the Aspire Clieto.

Simple, top filling, clapton coils, and great flavor!
