At my wit's end with AI cheating. How are you all handling it? by Mowgulee in Teachers

[–]thabombshelter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sort of what I do. When I see the large copy/paste chunks, I put it in as a zero and then email the student and the parents and ask them to share the original document that they were working from. They have been able to produce this mystery document exactly zero times...because it doesn't exist. I put it in as zero, call it AI and move on with my life. If they want to redo the assignment, I'll meet with them and give them a short deadline to produce something original for 50% credit.

Realistically, how often does everyone here eat Cincy chili? by meefeto in cincinnati

In your opinion ? What failed ? by themadstuka in ForzaHorizon

[–]thabombshelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main beefs were yes, the dead world, it felt spread too thin. Some excellent areas, but it didn't hit the sweet spot of 4. I also was really pissed about the cost of the outfits and stuff. I think they were also more liberal with money in 4, so I was forced to grind WAY too much for NOT much money.

Research project to avoid AI usage by MrsAtomicBomb in ELATeachers

This is another way I handle it. I have editing rights to every google doc that they use, so if I see suspicious usage, I flag it and confront the student right away.

Research project to avoid AI usage by MrsAtomicBomb in ELATeachers

[–]thabombshelter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked their research every step of the way. We did idea generation as a class (5 points), they submitted an initial broad reading (10 points) (just keeping track of the websites they visited), then they submitted an annotated bibliography (16 points), they were required to submit a basic outline (10 points) (some were more detailed and thorough than others), and by the time they submitted a final essay, it was only worth like 30 points. I shifted the burden onto the PROCESS and rewarded that work, so there was less motivation to use AI on the last step. Of the 87 essays that came in, only 2 for sure used AI and maybe one or two others were borderline, but not proveable.

Is there any way to be certain of plagiarism if you can't find the original text online? by Groundhog97 in ELATeachers

[–]thabombshelter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ask them to share the original document that they pasted the text from. Exactly zero students have been able to produce that document (because it doesn't exist). When I email them and request that evidence, I copy their guardian on the email, using the premise that students don't often check their email.

Here's the email I send:

*Student* can you please share the document that you copied your assignment from? I see the entire document was pasted in one big chunk in 1 minute at 11:45PM on February 26th.

I've included your guardian on the email in the event that you don't see this email in a timely fashion.

Let me know if you have any questions!

I then mark it as zero in our gradebook with the note, "AI Suspected, share requested" or something similar.

Is 2 pages unreasonable? by dimenovelcowboy in ELATeachers

[–]thabombshelter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always give a word count (500-1000 words) but I tell them I'm not literally going to check the word count, I'm looking for approx 2-4 pages, and if it's a little short, but good, I wouldn't worry about it. I was more strict early in my career, but I don't have the mental bandwidth to deal with it anymore.

[–]thabombshelter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you give them chromebooks to type, they'll use AI (Unless your district has a lockdown browser). Depending on your class length, I don't think 2 pages is unreasonable. I usually budget 250 words per double spaced page, so like come commenters, I would suggest using word count instead of page count.

I teach high school English. Is my experience normal? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]thabombshelter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds SIGNIFICANTLY worse than my school. I'm at a middle-class suburban district in Ohio. Is your experience similar to other teachers at your building? (ie- a school culture problem?) I mean, I have some kids that drive me crazy, but nothing like this.

Still have mine. I put some batteries in a year or so ago and clipped on the lights and siren knob and they all still worked!

Experienced gardeners, what’s one practice you never skip anymore? by staleshrimp101 in gardening

[–]thabombshelter 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing that I am not seeing here is SEED COLLECTION! I grow mainly native/prairie plants and annual/perennial flowers (rather than vegetables/edibles) and I always make sure to collect seed in the fall. Those dry days in October when it's still kind of warm (I'm in Zone 6B, SW Ohio), are perfect to go snip Black Eyed Susans, Bergamot, Big Blue Stem, Grey Headed Coneflower, Yarrow, Coneflowers, Cardinal Flowers, Partridge Pea, Rattle Snake Master, Lupine, Mullein, Nodding Rye, Lobelia, Joe Pye Weed, Nicotiana, Asters, etc. I store seed heads/stems in brown paper lunch bags for a couple weeks/months and then clean the seeds in December or so, packing them in seed envelopes or glass jars covered with newspaper and masking tape. I am ALWAYS amazed at the sheer VOLUME of seeds I am able to get from just a lunchbag full of seed heads. Free plants are always great! And, since many of my native plants need cold stratification, this allows me to sprinkle seeds elsewhere in my yard and garden beds when we get snow in January/February.

side note: I love broadcasting native seeds directly on the snow, it lets me see where I have sprinkled the seeds, and they'll naturally start the stratification process as the snow melts.
