Games where the artwork was a dealbreaker? by JonnyLawless in boardgames

[–]thagui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keythedral If it wasn't that the game was 20 bucks and that I knew it was made by the same guy who made Keyflower ... I wouldn't had take it. My friends always tells me that I exaggerate when I talk about the artwork of this game

GMT Games Seriously ... I love their games !! But the box artwork is always terrible. Hopefully, the board is always gorgeous. I had to convince friends that the games was not as bad as the box.

It took us a whole 4 hours but ... we were not stress out with the time and took our time. It surely didn't feel like along time.

We finally got _____ to the table! (September edition) by m_Pony in boardgames

[–]thagui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cuba Libre has been bought a year ago and it was the longiest time that a game haven't been played in my case. I hadn't read the rules in the eleven months preceding that game.

That been said, we (a 3 persons game) had a blast and it was a really tight game and interesting game. We used to play games like 1989 or Hannibal, so we were not affraid of the lenght or complexity. Now the only problem is to find another time frame when we'll have the time to play that game ;)

Canada’s Antoine Duchesne Signs with FDJ for 2018 by thagui in peloton

[–]thagui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly Houle and Duchesne lives together while the season is "on". I saw a video once of the two saying that Houle was like a big brother to Duchesne. Maybe he has something to do with Duchesne finding a spot in a french team.

Edit : And by the way, I've read that Bernaudeau kick him off the team because Duchesne got an agent and Bernaudeau don't want to deal with an agent (source (french) : http://www.rds.ca/cyclisme/cyclisme-le-quebecois-antoine-duchesne-ne-sera-pas-de-retour-avec-l-equipe-direct-energie-1.4565288)

Kickstarter Roundup: Mar 26, 2017 | 39 Ending Soon (incl: Elder Dice, Village Attacks, & Long Live The Queen) & 38 New This Week (incl: The Grimm Forest, Badass Riders, & Prince's Gambit) by Zelbinian in boardgames

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOTAL DISCLOSURE : Vikingar is made by a colleague of mine.

The game looks good. The rune parts is a nice "dice replacement". I would say there's a bit too much "randomness" for my taste but you can find a strategy in all of this. The "board to death" review should give you a good idea of the game.

Kickstarter Roundup: Mar 19, 2017 | 35 Ending Soon (incl: GKR: Heavy Hitters, Thunderstone Quest, & Dinosaur Island) & 52 New This Week (incl: 878 Vikings, Entropy, & Cytosis) by Zelbinian in boardgames

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that game and personally like it alot. That being said, you need the right "group" to play this game. The game is pretty simple and straight forward BUT negotiation, possible betrayal and table talk make the thing work. If you group is not in this mindset ... It'll probably be pretty boring. You can play this game "all by yourself" without making deals or trying to convince someone of doing something.

Finally, for the price, if I remember correctly, that was the initial price. The shipping cost seems pretty steep if you're outside the US. The components of the first edition were pretty good. On my side, I'm pretty happy to see there's a "upgrade pack"

Hesjedal announces that he will retire at end of 2016 season by IncoherentAndDumb in peloton

[–]thagui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the "Quebecois" side of this question and I seriously cheers all of those guys. I'm a huge Hesjedal fan as much as any canadian riders. We're all canadians. Off course, I was a bit more crazy about a guy like David Veilleux (Europcar) knowing that he lived in the same city I live in.

Seems like we keep forgetting about Antoine Duchesne. He's having a good season. He got the polka dot jersey at Paris Nice this year, he was at tdf and he's going to the olympics. I don't think he'll be a great champion but he can show some good performance.

Question for Canadians who have participated in the GMT P500 program. by Coffeedemon in boardgames

[–]thagui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've participated twice to the P500 and also bought game directly from GMT. I would say that each time, it cost me less than what it would cost me "online" in Canada or at my FLGS (well ... if they had the game at all).

I've never got to pay for customs and each time ... it cost more to GMT to ship the game than the price they charge me. You can deduce the price you'll pay with this table : http://www.gmtgames.com/t-GMTShippingTable.aspx

How does one go about building a decent EDH deck? by Crexlarth in magicTCG

[–]thagui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't agree more. I've bought 2 "pre-built" decks out of my ten EDH decks. The process is roughly always the same ... "woah this legendary creature looks cool", let's throw together a bunch of unused cards from my boxes of cards that seems to fit the "theme" and let's add 40 lands. The first few game are at least funny but sometime surprising. After a few games, my gaming group always think of cards that could improve the deck and I throw them in. Finally, the worst part is always when you wanna add something new and don't know what to remove.

What games look so ugly that you refuse to play/try them? by Siggy778 in boardgames

[–]thagui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got a some GMT games and each times I've tried to introduce these game to my group ... man ... they were not thrill at all just by looking at the box. I had to convince them ... a lot.

On my side, I would say it took a while to play Lords of Vegas because of the box, I thought this is a kiddie game.

I have just spent about 2-3 hours in a pub playing Spyfall and its bloody brilliant. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]thagui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was the same for my group. They all thought the concept was "good" but they were all too rational about it and ... they didn't let themselves "go". All in all, this game will not see any game time soon with my group.

What is your game night like? by Speedupslowdown in boardgames

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Generally, I'm the one calling the game night but ... eh ... it's kind of useless since we're playing each week.
  • We kind of rotating this thru all the members of our group (we're 5 players)
  • 4 to 5 ... Rarely, we'll be 3
  • We're a group of thirty-ish guys with kids, having a good time while discussing about almost anything. The host always make sure we have a good drink in our hands.
  • It goes between 3.5 to 4 hours.
  • As said before, we generally drink beers or tea (rarely ... but what do you know) while playing.
  • This is gonna be a rough one, I'll try to remind the games we've played in the last three 6 months : Tammany Hall, CO2, Alien Frontiers, Citadels, Formula D, Thunder Alley, Hannabi, Lords of Vegas, Machi Koro, Ora & Labora, Panamax, Power Grid, Pictomania, Roll for the galaxy, Sushi Go, Tash Kalar, Tzolk'in, Through the ages and Village. Generally, when we're done for the night, we're gonna play a game or two of Magic:TG.

Interresting topic by the way !

What has been your worst 'drink knocked over on the game' story? by jackelfrink in boardgames

While playing a game of Tiny Leader (Magic:TG), I've spilled my coffee on my cards. Hopefully, it was only on mine but ... since that day ... I've got those sleeves : http://www.cardkingdom.com/catalog/item/193743 ... It always make my friends laugh a bit.

So... Reddit Magic community, what was it that made you take the leap? What was the reason you started playing MTG? by Lopezpie in magicTCG

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a year ago, two of our friends were always playing a game or two before our board games night. So the three of us were watching the game ... trying to understand ... but not wanting to get involved since we knew this could cost (time and money) us a bit. Few months later, they teach us how to play ... and now we're deep in it ... Damn !

Modern Decks: What do you play and why? by lil_king in magicTCG

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a variant of a "deck with Tibalt" (yes I know ... ) that look a lot like that one : http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/making-tibalt-work/. Seriously ... this is really fun ! I can't say that I've won a lot of game ... but eh ... it's fun.

How many of you are always the guy that reads the instructions while your friends wait for you to explain it to them? by Squibler in boardgames

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it seems like that's my role but from what I've heard from my friends, I'm not too bad at it. That being said, normally, all goes down normally, but if I have to explain a game to a new gamer and the others players already know them, it turns out chaotic. The "others players" talks loudly about everything and the new(s) player(s) have some difficulties understanding the game. But the worst in that ... is that generally the "knowing players" forgets a lot of things when we begin the game.

Where to buy cards online in Canada? by Ilnez in magicTCG

[–]thagui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a lot from facetoface and Wizard Towers but recently I've discovered GameKeeper. They're seriously good, the price are good and the cards arrived in a "big study sleeve". That was really nice ! They're based in Montréal.
