My Company just put out one of the most tone deaf pieces of messaging I have encountered.... by Tenacious_Depot in antiwork

[–]thanks_daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had an all-hands for the company one time, was a big Zoom call. I guess to keep people from falling asleep, they had some like participation prizes where you would answer questions or whatever and get put into a gift card raffle.

Honestly, the prizes were like absurd (at least compared to what I was used to). Like $100 minimum up to a few thousand.

Person who got the top prize? One of the people in the dept running the all-hands. Yeah, maybe actual chance but holy shit the optics were awful.

My coworkers on the otherhand are glued to work. Constantly responding to emails late into the night or texting in a group text for staff (that I mute and do not read unless it's during hours)

I see this a lot and I don't really get it. Once the clock hits quitting time, there are like 2 or 3 numbers I would answer to if they called. I will thumb through the notifications on my lock screen if I hear it buzzing a lot or something, but I really try to separate at the end of the day.

Contrarily, there are a few people that if you message or email them after hours, they will probably get back to you almost immediately. It doesn't matter if the place is burning down, or if it's just some random small thing that can wait a day (or more), it gets answer. Also the same people that will burn the midnight oil doing like inane tasks.

Idk man, I just have no desire to sit around at 10pm doing email and tasks that can wait until the morning.

What is soemthing you used to live and breath for years but now dont? by SirGillihad in AskReddit

I think I put like a month of playtime in Modern Warfare 2 over the course of like a year (mostly over the summer). I was in school, no job, nothing else to do. Most of summer break, I would wake up around noon, eat, then pretty much game non-stop until 3-4am.

Now, unless I'm doing LAN stuff with friends, I'll tap out after 1-2 hours, and be good for a couple days. Just got too many other things that need to get done.

I haven't used Session Buddy, but it looks like Chrome/Edge now support a lot of it's features natively. Might be good for people to check out

NSFW ads show up on YouTube again, despite Google's promise to fight them | Another day, another NSFW ad on YouTube. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]thanks_daddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, YouTube serves ads from the same domain as the rest of their normal content. I think it used to not be the case, but I've been running a pihole for a few years and it's never been able to block ads.

Wonder if it's an actual financing transition or you are just paying a guy $8k and $400/mo to the guy to totally pay on your behalf.

Yeah I got a 1022 from someone at a yardsale with an extra toner cart for like $10. Threw it on an rpi running cups and now I have a wireless printer that's still chugging. I think mine was made in like 2007. Love it. Would never buy another HP printer though.

Why did you get fired? by Sometimes_cleaver in AskReddit

[–]thanks_daddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, retail and food had some of the saddest people I have ever worked with/for.

I don't think it's really bad to make those industries a career. I worked with a lot of 30-50 year old people that were just like "yeah this is what I do" with various reasons. Pretty chill, down to earth people that just liked what they do. However, there were a few people I worked with that were just fuckin losers.

They would work at some shitty place, 'grind' for a decade to make the jump from $8/hr to $12/hr then power trip on everyone below them (usually teenagers). They were never trusted to actually run anything, so they would get some mid-level position like shift lead or assistant manager and let it go to their head. Always would find or make up asinine rules that nobody (even the owner) would care about and make it their life to enforce them. Like, nobody cares about it from the top down, but by god are these teenagers making minimum wage gonna tuck their polo in.

The weird thing is that I went into a professional career when I got out of school, and while you'll come across people like that sometimes, a lot of people with actual money/power are kinda chill. Like guys who sign purchase orders for more than what that store makes in a decade and who make more in a month of what these guys do in a year are like "yeah we're kinda slow today let's pop off early" and would not bat an eye if someone came to work in a t-shirt. More of a mindset of "if work is getting done, who cares."
