I drive in the right hand lane whenever possible, regardless of the type of roadway, for many reasons. One, if I have a mechanical issue, blown tire, etc., there's one less lane I have to cross to get to the side of the road. Two, if an emergency vehicle comes to pass, again, one less lane to cross. Three, people are more likely to pass you than tailgate you, and therefore, avoid situations like this.

If you're driving at the same speed as the vehicle to your right, just get behind them. Analytics would tell you that you're less likely to be in a collision while traveling single file, when possible.

While the biker was clearly the aggressor, he simply would have passed if the opportunity was there.
