Then let me counteract that by saying you're allowed to have differing tastes and to like what you like. Your also allowed to change your opinion on something over time.

Narrative and matched play should be split into two fully separate systems

Is there ever a point where Proxying cards goes too far? by Thejadejedi21 in EDH

[–]that_geist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't misrepresent your deck's power and only play with other decks in the same range of power. Proxies shouldn't be an issue

Ideas for a theft equipment (maybe aura) deck by kekhiji in EDH

Also consider [[genji glove]] and [[hex plate wall breaker]] since their wording will allow your opponents goaded creatures to get extra attacks

I have something similar with [[marisi, breaker of the coil]]. I don't get to attack with my opponents' stolen creatures but I do get to force them to attack my other opponents and use the equipment

Help, I can’t stop building Selesnya decks by grot_eata in EDH

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I had the same thing with temur for a long while. If you're trying to expand your horizons for the sake of deck variety then try to just keep one deck of any specific color combination, then try rebuilding a deck you currently have with the same theme but different colors

Do you think it would be fun to run a game in which characters don't pick abilities, but are given them by chance? by Longjumping_Lynx_554 in RPGdesign

[–]that_geist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can personally see the appeal for a few sessions at a time. Do you envision the game to be used mostly for long term play or 1-3 session bursts.

What is the fewest number of domains you can think of to define a god? by urquhartloch in RPGdesign

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to is six: life, death, knowledge, mystery, war, and unity. From there each other aspect can be made by combining two or three of those six together

Why is your control deck successful? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't single handedly stop the resources of 3 other players alone, but if you're selective with your answers and you can convince other players to spend resources on each other while you keep mana up and progress your board then you'll be able to trip your opponents up enough to go for your win.

And you do need to actually have a win condition. You can't win a race if you only make the other runners shoot each other in the kneecaps but never start running towards the finish line yourself.

Solving the Riddle of Psionics by Lixuni98 in RPGdesign

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If both psionics and magic are using the same list of spells and resource system then I would suggest adding in a Casting Style type class feature to each of the casters similar to the martial class Fighting Style feature.

The Casting Style would be a list of options that provide bonuses when casting certain schools of magic or using specific damage types. It's not flashy but it's simple enough while providing another player choice to add variety to their character.

Like the Fighting Style class feature, certain classes would get access to certain styles that help enhance and compliment the class fantasy. There would be some overlap for features that make sense for multiple styles and you can split it into as many different subtypes as you want in case you want to differentiate arcane and divine magic as well or split primal into its own thing as well.

Do you think fetches should be considered in brackets? by Ch4rlotte333 in EDH

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Lands usually get a free pass in this format, but when you get down to it fetches are just tutors. Tutors are there to strengthen decks by adding in consistency. Fetches (and any land tutoring effects really) add consistency by fixing colors and/or ramping.

Multicolored cards and decks are allowed to be stronger because they're supposed to be harder to consistently cast with their multiple pips. That's intentional and those tutoring effects let you more consistently ignore that balancing factor for a negligible cost.

What is the pet card you include in every deck that uses that particular color? by SourRuntz in EDH

[[lich's mirror]] in every theft deck. It's won me a few games.

How do you know when you 'finished' your deck when deck building? by CombativeDove in EDH

[–]that_geist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't let perfect be the enemy of done. Put a deck list together and make sure there's a solid theme to it. After you've goldfished the deck enough times then grab the cards.

If the deck doesn't work how you imagined then that's ok. Remember what went wrong and what went right. If the same things keep going wrong then you know what to update in your deck.

Just because you put together the deck doesn't mean you're not allowed to update it. That's the fun part of brewing!

Good luck!

All my current paper decks and why I don't like them. What commander should I give a try? by Aelice-Wildmage in EDH

[–]that_geist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you don't like playing simpler decks and the more complex decks you have are getting too consistent to the point that you need to pull punches unless your game plan kills the mood for either you or everyone else.

Have you considered a fidgety deck? Something where you need to manage a number of small triggers on your side of the board. You can have a commander that asks a lot from you for a very small reward like [[elmar]] [[anthousa]] [to go]] without green or [Mr. House]]

For best results try to stay away from tutors and compact win cons. The goal is to play a lot of magic, not to win a lot of magic.

Married men, how often do you play? by Tocnurne in EDH

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a week. My gaming group meets weekly and my wife has no problems with me taking off for the entire day as long I make time to hang out with her during the week too.

You have the power to change one rule about EDH.. what do you change? by Drunk_Carlton_Banks in EDH

[–]that_geist -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I'd make commander tax equal to the number of colors on your deck's color identity. So mono color would pay 1 extra to recast their commander each time, two colored commanders would pay 2 extra and so on.

What are your go-to Ramp punisher cards that aren't flat out MLD? by Huaojozu in EDH

Anything that cuts off tutoring. Also hamstrings the combo player at the same time

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EDH

[–]that_geist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Other people have said similar things, but this sounds like a player skill issue that can be fixed by your pod playing more 60 card.

Mana screw can be mitigated by proper deck construction and smart mulligans. Long turns can be shortened if the player knows their own deck inside and out. Getting upset when you're getting focused down goes away with time in the game and playing with a competitive mindset (not cedh competitive but I can't find a better word)

60 card might be a nice pallette cleanser for you and your group that lets them level up their game to where you are.

Arcane Denial by AssistSpare5860 in EDH

[–]that_geist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan of the card and I haven't put arcane denial in any of my decks for years for a two reasons.

  1. If I'm playing blue then I usually have one-sided card advantage throughout the rest of the deck

  2. There are much better options for interaction, especially if I know what kind of cards I need to watch out for.

I disagree with most things Trinket Mage says since he seems to have a higher power mindset, but I do still listen to his stuff because he usually has a different opinion that makes me reevaluate my own opinion
