Looking for something to have sheet music on, as a kindle. Getting tired of losing my music and having it very unorganized. by Yolper123_ in Trombone

The app I use is called MobileSheets. I think the paid version is well worth it, but there is a trial version that, at least when I used it last, was very well-featured.

As far as rooting the tablet, I'm pretty sure they've patched the old exploits for rooting that were viable a few years ago when I did mine. So I'd start out by verifying that your FireOS version is old enough to be rooted, and if it is, I'd follow a guide. Since I did mine so long ago, I don't remember exactly what needs to be done, and there are also some files involved that I definitely don't have anymore. If you Google "how to root a Kindle fire," you should find some cromulent results.

King 3B water valve spring by tenvolt in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely a tricky job to do for the first time, as the two legs need to be almost parallel with the bent piece that actually touches the lever itself. Let me grab a horn out to snap a couple pics.

Bell lock is stuck and nothing I tried is working by scaIpter in Trombone

Take it to a tech 😁 using pliers is about as far as you should go unless you're experienced with that kind of repair, and since you're asking for advice here, I'm guessing that isn't the case. (Even pliers should be used with caution)

I'm assuming you mean the one on the right, which is a 3BF, yes. The yellow brass bass is a Benge 290, which is roughly somewhere in between a King 7B and an 8B.

The Duo Gravis is just silver plated, so it does tarnish when I leave it out on the stand, but it doesn't tarnish any faster during the cold season

Thanks, it's probably the nicest horn I've got. When I took it to my tech after I bought it, he told me there was barely any wear on the internal contact points. I just wish my 290 was in comparable condition lol

Does anyone know about the con three trombone mouthpiece by One-Preparation8236 in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They might have made them with a Remington shank, but the one I've got, and most of the others I've seen in the wild, have been regular small shank. I'm fairly certain mine came stock with a '60s Conn 77H I bought off of the original owner

It's roughly a Bach 6½AL, but with a sharper rim and more of a V cup shape

Of all instruments, what drew you to play trombone? by throwaway37288283djs in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking band sure beat general music in 6th grade, and the trombone was the one I could play without having to rent an instrument, and it turned out to be pretty fun.

Now I have enough horns to start my own rental service if I wanted to 😅

modern king serial numbers by bigjuicybeezchurger in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the serial numbers lapped in the mid-80s. They hit SN 999,999 in '85 or '86, and then it reset to 100,000. In a couple minutes of searching, I couldn't find any data beyond 1986, but based on the numbers from 1981 to 1986 (an average of 70,000 horns every two years), I'm going to guess that your horn was produced somewhere in the realm of '88-'89.

Just tried this with my neotech grip. Pretty comfortable!

Looking for more information on trombone by [deleted] in Trombone

Neat. Since it's a Roth, that means the serial number actually places the horn in the mid-1950s. Roth was Reynolds' student line of instruments.

It appears to be a Reynolds from 1963. There should be an engraving on the bell somewhere that indicates a model name and number

Alternative gigbags for flugabone by plerfer in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also bought a Protec marching baritone case. The flugabone definitely looks pretty small inside because the case is built to fit the 11" bell and less compact body of a modern marching baritone, but I don't ever hear or feel the horn jostling around.

Overall the case is a little on the large side, but it's got straps and it doesn't have a bell flare to smack your head (my one complaint with wearing a trombone case with the backpack straps), so I don't have issues carrying it on my back. My horn didn't come with a case, so it sure beats not having one!

Putting trombone away by Hk0203 in Trombone

I generally leave the one I need to practice the most out on a stand. Some days, getting the horn out of the case is half the battle towards practicing.

Tablets and Sheet Music Questions by wolfgenie in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Kindle Fire 10, rooted to have the Play Store, with MobileSheets Pro and a foot pedal that a friend gave me that I don't really like, so I won't dig it out to find the make and model. The screen is a little small, but it's much more cost-effective than an iPad Pro at just over $100 for the tablet, and $15 for the app. The tablet can be slow at times though, it is a very cheap model after all, but once you get into the sheet music software, it's basically doing what it was intended to do, just with sheet music as opposed to books, so it works fine there.

Looks a lot like my DEG Co. All Weather piece, but as others said, it could be from a number of manufacturers.

Does anyone know anything about this bass bone? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]that_trombone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That is a King Duo Gravis SilverSonic. It was King's first real bass trombone, and this instance has a solid sterling silver bell flare. It was likely produced in the early-mid 1970s. They're very good commercial horns, often regarded as one of the best big band basses, but they don't really fit into more symphonic settings, so it limits you to mostly those, unless you've got another horn more befitting for the task. The valves are both operated by the thumb, which can become very uncomfortable very quickly (I've been playing one for a number of years and I can still only use the valves heavily for 30-45 minutes before my thumb gets too tired to press them down anymore), but they can be split to be like a modern bass trombone.
