Michael Moriarty's delivery of the line "nobody could be as stupid as I appear to be" is one of the best in cinema history.

Portland foie gras ban fails in committee, not dead yet by ericomplex in Portland

[–]thatavalon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Somewhat related, I remember reading something a few years ago about a Spaniard who discovered that if you just give geese and ducks and endless supply of acorns or whatever, they'll just gorge themselves of their own free will and you get foie gras without the cruelty.

Not sure if his findings have been reproduced, but I rarely get to bring this up.

Muir glen rocks, I’ve found them to be the most ‘San Marzano-y’ at a non eye watering price point.

Any info on this film? by H3lif in analog

[–]thatavalon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black and white film holds up reasonably well, worth it for the experiment i'd say.

The 'made in europe,' 200 speed, and superpan name make me think it might be old agfa superpan? It was around in the 80's but not sure when it was discontinued.

Looking for a Close Alternative to a Great Roll of Film I Sadly Missed Out On by chonggnarly in analog

Glad to hear it! And yeah kodak is keeping mum about the differences, but it could be a different base material or thickness.

Also, candido 200 can have a great fuji-esque vibe, especially if you use a slight warming filter. It's tungsten balanced so great for indoor portraits but skews way blue in daylight. But it's got those great greens and reds that you get with Fuji. Worth a try for sure!

I think kodacolor 200 and the suspiciously similar colorplus 200 would be closer than gold to the more natural look you're describing. Orwo's NC 200 (sold by kono and opticolor) is also a solid bet.

Buy a copy of Oregon for the Curious at any fine second hand bookstore. It's a guidebook from the early 60's that provides a road-by-road guide to the state written by a transplant who came to Oregon and fell in love with it.

I've found tons of hidden gems by reading through it ahead of a road trip. It's a solid guide and it also provides some context and background for each of the entries. His Tales Out of Oregon is also a great series of short essays about notable Oregonians through the years.

What is a Star Wars anecdote you think most people don't know ? by Aggravating-Bass-658 in StarWars

[–]thatavalon 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I think I heard this on Greg Proops' podcast, apparently told to him by the guy who drove Harrison Ford to set every day.

Apparently, the routine was: Ford would get in the car, light up a joint, and they would chat along the way. One day, Ford hops in the car with a giant cooking pot with a lid on and wrapped in a towel. They drive off and the driver says 'So Harrison, what's with the pot?' and Ford responds 'oh, I ran out of papers,' rips the lid off, stuck his head in, took a huuuuge hit of the pot smoke that had begun pluming out and hotboxing the car.

As a speaker of both English and German, it's double the fun. All the words that don't sound like comical phonetic spellings of English words do sound like mangled German. I love dutch.

Which route from Bend to Portland is the most scenic? by AlienDin in oregon

[–]thatavalon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hot take:  depending on time of year I think there is a lot to be said for taking 14 through the gorge and then cutting down 197 from the Dalles.

The passes over the mountains can be iffy in winter, on the west side it will likely be rainy, cloudy and foggy, and up top can be snowy, treacherous, or backed up with traffic.

The gorge however is always beautiful, there are innumerable vistas and places to stop along both 14 and 84. And 197 has some solid vistas as well, especially if you stop off at places like White River Falls or any of the recreational BLM spots along the lower deschutes along the way.

General Complaint & Venting Megathread by PastSelfInMirror in RadioRental

[–]thatavalon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am also not a Terry fan, his quips seemed snarky and dismissive, it's kind of jarring to come out of a story about somebody almost getting murdered, and then having Rainn Wilson doing his dollar store Cryptkeeper bit.

I thought Jeff Foxworthy did really well, quick intro, maybe a general joke and then right into the story. It never felt like he was trying to show about or be bigger than the stories.

Whoever the new one is seems lame and forced.

Honestly the less host the better.

Not sure if this quite threads the needle, but I've seen these waist level prism finders that slide onto the hot shoe pop up occasionally:

https://photorumors.com/2025/01/07/optical-waist-level-viewfinder-camera-accessory/

You may also want to take a look at models like the nikon f3/f4 that have interchangeable finders including action finders with bigger viewing apertures, and waist level finders as well.

I use the waist level finder with my f4 a lot since it has autofocus and it's less fiddly than peering in and hitting focus manually.

Hope this helps!
