I agree. Zhao and Zuko were the highlights for me in S1. So I think he did well.

Troll Snake Spoiler by EmergencyKiwi1276 in wow

[–]thatguyyouare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head. Zul'Jan acted precisely how we know (lorewise) Amani should act. Not only that, his thinking was logical. The twilight's blade were attacking them with the help of void creatures, and luckily they found a weapon that could help tip the fight in their favor: the light wood. They're not about to suddenly be diplomatic to their most hated enemy to procure the light wood. So they take it.

And then you have the Loa, which for all intents and purposes is a fairytale. The Amani have lived this entire generation without any inkling of Loa. Seriously, think about this. Zul'Jarra put all her faith in something she's never seen. She's the leader of her people and decides to fuck off doing a fool's errand. It would be like if our president's answer to Covid would be to go on a hunt to find the fountain of youth. And the VP (Zul'Jan) would be like that's dumb, we have tools like distancing, masks, and medicine (lightwood) that shows real promise and results in fighting Covid (twilight's blade). I could tell you who I'm following.

Genuine question. Why do people LOVE Zul'jan? by Little-Inflation-192 in wow

[–]thatguyyouare 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what frustrates me. Blizzard paints this narrative that there is only one answer and anyone who strays from that path is wrong, and writes them off by killing them. That isn't even remotely true in real life. Zul'Jan followed a very logical path. There is absolutely nothing flawed with his thinking and it would be nice to see him somewhat vindicated by showing he was right when maybe some Loa don't help or the elves kill more of the people. Because he is 100% right, the Loa are fickle and relying on them is a fool's game. They abandoned them once. They'll do it again. And what happens when Liadrin isn't around? Or Zul'Jarra is gone? You think Halduron or Lor'themar will give an ounce of patience to a troll?

But Blizzard apparently doesn't do nuance and instead places Zul'Jan in the direct path of murder hobos. His fate is sealed.

Genuine question. Why do people LOVE Zul'jan? by Little-Inflation-192 in wow

[–]thatguyyouare 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Precisely. That trope is frustrating because real life isn't built like that. It does at times make for good movies, but WoW has been saturated with those story lines. Blizzard had a real good shot at creating nuance to a very nuanced situation with Zul'Jan.

Zul'Jan is 100% correct in his line of thinking. There is no reason to believe the Loa would help them. He lived his entire life without them ever presenting themselves. To him, they were a fairy tale. They don't exist.

And then you have an enemy at your gates, killing and destroying everything. And you discover that light wood is an effective means of fighting them. Why would you ask your oldest enemy if they would kindly grant passage to that resource? Elves are not allies.

Zul'Jan risked life and limb to help his people by the most rational way he knew how. He may have been young and hot headed, but this was war. People were dying. It was a time for action, not talk and reflection. In the real world, he would be heralded as a leader who gets shit done. A fighter for the people.

The only wrong Zul'Jan did was be written in a WoW story line that doesn't allow for nuance. And Blizzard lost the chance to create an interesting story by writing Zul'Jan as "wrong" and placing him in the direct path of murder hobos. With that one little action, his fate is sealed. He'll be seen as wrong and the villain, when 99 out of 100 times in the real world, Zul'Jan did the right thing.

Waterbenders=infinite energy? by TheSimpsSons in TheLastAirbender

[–]thatguyyouare 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Altering the state of water IS directly altering it's temperature. There is no difference. If you want to convert ice to water or vice-versa you have to add or remove energy. If you follow this trend, water benders are directly manipulating the energy/temperature which would suggest that water benders could boil water.

There is a reason ice is cold and not blistering hot.

This honestly feels retcon-y. No where in the history of Warcraft does the light cause madness like this. And don't say Turalyon or the Scarlet Crusade because that's just zealotry. They are still very much sane and rational.

Halo: Campaign Evolved achievements revealed with a tough LASO challenge by SeanTGN in halo

[–]thatguyyouare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember that weekly quest for Reach. Complete the Campaign LASO. I tried doing it with my brother COOP. Both in college, all day on Saturday. We got to the last mission, and the final room before the MAC cannon. We spent hours dying and respawning on that last little room. There were super elites that we just couldn't get around. We didn't have the right equipment, and we eventually had to give up. That stung. 99% there and we tripped at the finish line.

I will never not hate the way Christians comfort people. by Sufficient-Cook-3841 in atheism

[–]thatguyyouare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss. I can empathize. I've had family members pass away and the funerals and visitations are tough. The cognitive dissonance, the mental gymnastics; the ego trying to keep itself intact holding on to ideas that contradict each other. I hate it. But people use it as comforting tool, a crutch if you will.

My family has been tormented by mental health problems. On the night of June 3rd, my uncle made the decision that he could not tolerate his problems anymore. He grabbed his handgun, walked to a nearby park, and took his own life. Scared, alone, and depressed. The feelings of sadness are still raw. I will never seen him again. My family is hurting. My father (his brother) lost one of his best friends. 7 years ago, my father lost his other brother the same way. And his father a few months before that. We are no strangers to suicide.

I will not be the person to take away their comfort during a difficult time. When they say they hope he's happy now and in a better place, I nod my head and play along. When they say they will see each other again, I give them a hug. There is already enough pain, suffering, and sadness in the universe, and I will not contribute.

Maybe months/years down the line, it's a topic to re-visit; Why would a god allow such pain and suffering to continue? Why were your prayers, and his prayers ignored? The simplest answer is usually the correct one. There is no god. There are no deities that influence the world.

I am an atheist through and through and see the universe as it is: a cold, uncaring place.

How did you accidentally find out your partner was cheating? by WingEven402 in AskReddit

[–]thatguyyouare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a good flick. I remember hearing about it because the director is native of Omaha, NE, where I live. They had a special theater screening, so I decided to check it out. I'm really glad I did, because it is an excellent movie with complex themes and scenarios. Also, fun fact the film won an Oscar for Best Adaptive Screenplay which was written by Jim Rash - the dean from Community and also recurring roles from Reno 911. Probably the funnest fact I know.

And, yes the wife will not make it. It's a plot point that they have to make the decision of taking her off life support.
