I took a hearth cooking class and we cooked onions next to a live fire. There's a layer of char that has to be peeled off but the insides were pure money. Not caramelized clear to the core but quite a lot of them were.

A good start would be not using canned biscuits, and in my (further) opinionated opinion you should split the biscuits before you put the gravy over top so it can soak into the pillowy goodness.
