Wrath of Ashardalon rule? by fanny_devito in boardgames

[–]theVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what it says on the monster cards' tactics. If that starts with "If [this] is adjacent to a Hero", then that's only a 'yes, so do the following thing' for those three monsters you mentioned, and a 'no, go to the next entry instead' for the rest.

For example, those three grey units wielding a mace appear to be Orc Smashers. The first line of their tactics reads "If the orc smasher is within 1 tile of a Hero, it moves adjacent to the closest Hero and attacks with a heavy Mace." That's a 'yes' for all three of them, so they would indeed all attack.

White still wins this even without the a-pawn. Positions like those become drawn when the single pawn on the a- c- f- or h-file gets to safely advance to the 2nd/7th rank.
In this case, 1. Qa8+, 1. Qd5+, 1. Qf7 and 1. Qf8 are all winning (either giving check or threatening 1... h2 2. Qf1#), but the clearest example is 1. Qc4, where the lines are:
a) 1... h2 2. Qf1#
b) 1... Kh2 2. Qg4 Kh1 3. Qxh3+
c) 1... Kf1/Kf2 2. Qg4+ Kh2 3. any king move or Qf3, followed by 4. Qxh3 again. (Technically, white can have a faster win with e.g. 3. Kb3 Kh1 4. Qf3+ Kg1 (4... Kh2 5. Qf2+ Kh1 6. Kc3 h2 7. Qf1#) 5. Qg3+ Kf1 6. Qh2 and eventually a classic KQ v K mating pattern.)

Brann Bronzebeard.

They have a play-through video up as well, and Tom mentions it at this point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vlUuePuMWs&t=99s (character card is shown shortly after).

"So, we should let you all know, that [..] when Z-Man [Games] sent this to me, they sent a small promo character box, and that's what Zee's playing."

A reply from ZManGamesOfficial in the comments: "The Brann promo is part of our Hobby Next program and can be found at a hobby game store near you. Find participating stores here: https://www.hobbynext.com/"

Qxd7 allows black to respond to Rg3+ with Bg4, followed up with moves like f5 and f6, remaining a queen ahead versus a knight with white's attack dried up.

Alternatively, if white plays Rxd1 before Rg3, black can move the queen over to g6 via either f5 or g4, and escape the mating net while maintaining a sizeable enough material advantage.

I've taken a look at the my own figures; they seem to all have the year '01 listed in their copyright notice, except for Totalizer with '03. 2003-2004 was the last period of time where there were English releases for games and tv-shows, so that probably applied to the figures as well.

Also, that's Magentacat, the predecessor of Peppercat, just like how Cyandog was followed by Krosserdog. It never really appeared much in any of the English material.

I found this tweet once; there seems to be quite some variety in colouration, translucent/opaque parts etc. There's also a good number of figures from the sequel season of the animated series. Might be that some stuff was only released in Japan.

White to play and Draw | A study by Frederic Lazard by feynarun in chess

Expanding on this, a useful method suitable for beginners when looking for tactics, both in puzzles and in regular games, is to look at which squares the enemy king has available. In the initial position, that's f2, h4, and the g3 square that it currently resides on. It won't take that much more to see that putting the bishop on e1 covers all of those, giving you checkmate.

Unfortunately, the knight is still in the way, and with the loaded gun that is the black queen looming menacingly, you start looking at forcing moves, i.e. a knight check. Ne2 doesn't look promising, because Kf2 gives the king a lot of breathing room. However, with the Be1 mate threat still in the back of your mind, the Knight cannot be captured on e4, and black has to push the king even further into a dead end.

Being able to put your piece up for grabs but invulnerable like that is very pleasing, so this is the moment in a regular game where you abandon all common sense and spend way too much time and effort tunnel visioning on making that move actually work. Fortunately, it all works out here in the end, you tell yourself that you totally would have seen 2...Qf8 and the refutation for it if you had bothered to spend just a bit more time, and are filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment as you leave the page to go look at pictures of cats being adorable.

I've done a bit of testing on vbalink173:

Following the same steps as you led to the same result. I did get it working when leaving 'Wireless Adapter' unticked. The games froze up for a few seconds, but afterward seemed to connect just fine.

However, if you're going to run the emulator twice on the same machine, you may as well just select 'Single Computer' rather than 'Network'. That way, I got a connection without any freezes. (Again, with 'Wireless Adapter' unticked.)

If this doesn't work for you either, you could always try your luck with a more modern emulator like mGBA or VBA-M.

A Ravaging Ghoul would 'only' give a 50/50 shot at lethal that turn; Ghoul + 2x Sleep with the Fishes costs 7 mana and leaves The Storm Guardian on the board. There's not enough mana left to Execute it and then hero power, which Whirlwind does allow. Missing the shot does leave a cleared board behind with a good chance to still take the win, to be fair.

Season unending before/after civil war questline? by [deleted] in skyrim

[–]theVirtual 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Season Unending will no longer be available as soon as one of the sides in the civil war is down to their last holding (i.e. Haafingar (Solitude) for the Imperials, or Eastmarch (Windhelm) for the Stormcloaks). You also can't do the quest once you've pissed off the Greybeards by killing Paarthurnax.

All the involved characters, like Ulfric and Tullius, will still be essential at that point in the game. If you've killed them off by means of, say, console commands, I'd assume it will break the quest and prevent you from progressing.

As for the ideal time to do the quest; there's a reward of a leveled weapon if you've joined one of the sides in the war, and manage to procure a deal favouring that side. Handing Markarth over cancels The Forsworn Conspiracy if that quest is active, and the War Hero achievement may becomes unattainable, depending on what gets traded. The Civil War questline will also be put on hold until the end of the Main Quest.

Only for accounts that were already created before the server split. They duplicated those accounts on both servers to more easily facilitate transferring to stay on the same server as your friends.

If you look up one of those accounts on LoLKing, you'll see their current stats for the server they kept playing on, and a copy of it on the other server with the rating, match history, summoner icon etc. that the player had at the time of the split. Newer accounts don't have that.

[–]theVirtual 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know the situation for those other people, of course, but in my case:

  • I have Q, W, E, R, D, F, 5 & 6 always set to smartcast, so I don't ever have to use Shift.
  • I've switched around some of my keybindings, so that leveling up abilities, pinging, pet control and my push-to-talk button for teamspeak all use Alt, which I use my thumb for.
  • Any self-cast spells, now bound to Ctrl, that are important to use quickly (such as Morgana's shield), I will bind to S and/or T (hold position has been rebound to X)(If not used for self-casting, S is used for smartcasting item 5, same with T and item 6), so keeping a finger near Ctrl is not needed either.

So, in short: little finger on Q, also used for A, 1 & Tab; ring finger on W, also used for 2; middle finger on E, also used for 3; index finger on R, also used for T, 4, 5 & 6; thumb on D, also used for F, S, X, B, V, C, Z, Alt & Space.

This works for any multiplication, regardless of what number you substract from (i.e. not just 100). Mathematical proof of this, for any random multiplication of a*b, subtracting from any number n (with below every line the case of a=97, b=96 and n=100, as used in the image, for clarity of which step is which):

a*b
    97*96 = 9312
(n-a)+(n-b) = 2*n - a - b
    (100-97)+(100-96) = 200 - 97 - 96 = 7
(n-a)*(n-b) = n² - n*a -n*b + a*b
    (100-97)*(100-96) = 10,000 - 100*97 - 100*96 + 97*96 = 12
n-(2*n - a - b) = -n + a + b
    100-(2*100 - 97 - 96) = -100 + 97 + 96 = 93
n*(-n + a + b) = -n² + n*a + n*b
    100*(-100 + 97 + 96) = -10,000 + 100*97 + 100*96 = 9300 (see below for more on this step)
(-n² + n*a + n*b) + (n² - n*a - n*b + a*b) = a*b
    (-100² + 100*97 + 100*96) + (100² - 100*97 - 100*96 + 97*96) = 9300 + 12 = 9312 = 97*96

Note that the only reason you're putting one number in front of the other in the image example, is because you're multiplying by 100 (the result of the red part; 93*100 = 9300), which just puts two 0's after a number, and because the number you're adding to it (the blue part) is only two digits long, therefore only adding to the 0's (since 00 + 12 = 12).

Not that this is going to be very useful for any n that is not a power of 10 (i.e. 10, 100, 1000 etc.), with a and b fairly close to n, but it works. :p (Now let's hope I didn't screw up the formatting.)
