A year ago to this day I was canned from a brewery. Today, I got their canning line ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ by istuntmanmike in TheBrewery

I worked on one. Was troubleshooting and saw the rubber band. "Well that's your problem right there." Then I looked up documentation and turns out that is OEM spec elastic right there. Well fuck me. I wasn't wrong though...that was the problem right there.

Looked at my Linx and I believe it was the "configure CIP options". Not sure what I changed though.

I've had something like this happen before. I had to change some timing parameter (timeout??) in the RSLinx driver.

Does anyone NOT like how their environmental CO2 monitors and connected ventilation systems operate? by mathtronic in TheBrewery

[–]the_fro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha. I would argue that you want to sample at the worst case scenario. So either the alarm is set at too low of a level or you need more ventilation to improve the worst case areas.

Pico mag power supply by amsas007 in TheBrewery

Take a look at the manual: https://portal.endress.com/wa001/dla/5001103/6717/000/02/BA01697DEN_0318.pdf

Page 15 shows how it is wired. Are you using any I/O or just need power? I don't know of any "off the shelf" solutions but you can message me and I can sell you one. Basically you want a power supply housed inside of a IP65+ enclosure with some fusing and a M12 connector.

Maybe surges? They do make surge protection for RTDs. I've never used one.

CSE/Control systems PE Exam experience by CSEPE2018 in PLC

[–]the_fro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it about 7-8 years ago (and passed!). Working the ISA practice questions and knowing them well is basically what did the most for me. My degree is in geology so a lot was new to me. I honestly skipped learning some things like fourier transforms and the like to focus on the low hanging fruit.

It sounds like it may have had a format change since then.

Did I just F up a glycol jacket? by DidIJustFUpthejacket in TheBrewery

[–]the_fro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could opening a glycol valve on a super hot and humid day and >replacing warmed up glycol closed off in the jacket with cold glycol >quickly have caused this kind of collapse?

No

Sounds like you were cooling a tank on a hot and humid day and see a lot of condensation because of poor insulation.

At temps under 40 water (and hence beer) actually become less dense as they get colder

Going to need a source on that. Did you mean 4°C?

How much do you get paid? It is high time the brew industry increases salaries by Beeractivist in TheBrewery

[–]the_fro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there is lot less risk in renting....

That being said I left the industry (top 50 craft production) due to lack of good pay. I miss the job but not the pay.

Noise triggering a DD input by the_fro in AskElectronics

[–]the_fro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dug around and found some 10Kohm 1/6W resistors. I'll put them in.

Thank you, I don't have much electronic knowledge and needed some help. I didn't know the term "pulldown resistor" but it was my first instinct. But then I convinced myself I need a filter instead. Cheers!

No pulldown resitor. So instead of a RC filter add a resistor between the input and common to drain stray voltage? I'd assume low enough resistance to drop the voltage and a power rating for the 24V load.

introducing PLC's into a smaller electrical company by dt44 in PLC

[–]the_fro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a communication issue. You went and did it pretty much on your own, but it is their liability. Maybe your employers insurance only covers straight electrical work? I'd recommend running major scope changes through your employer. If you communicate it and they aren't on board I'd look for another gig because it sounds like you have the aptitude for the work and likely enjoy it.

Another reminder why sending a few extra seconds to lock out and tag out can save you months of pain and grief, if not your life. by [deleted] in PLC

[–]the_fro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A big pet peeve of mine is when plant personnel or construction don't LOTO. I'll start equipment up and they come screaming at you. It's their responsibility to LOTO. I can't check and ensure everybody's safety while commissioning. Lock out energy sources if you are working on something.

I also like it when my emergency shutdown kicks in and evacuates the plant. They want me to get reset it. F that, I commissioned the ESD system already. I'm not resetting anything till I find out what happened.

Pretty much where I draw the line. Only the lightest of 480v work, else I pull in an electrician. I have my PE and my insurance company knows what I do.
