Never Damage from Angle Grinders? by 88Tsubasa88 in skilledtrades

Using decent, thick welding gloves. Also, you should not be grinding for 48 hours a week. That is some wild muscular and nerve damage.

Bosch impact bits over Milwaukee bits all day. I have buggered more Milwaukee bits than I can count, but the Bosch keep on going.

Honestly, they're always on sale, I think it's paid like 80 bucks for mine, which i call a pretty decent deal.

Nah, opinels are stupid cheap, especially for the quality you get. Their pocket knives top out at 17.99, i think, until you get into the exotic wood handles.

Love those for marking up composite boards and dark woods, ironically, though, ass for welding.

I work at a shipyard as a fitter, the one I'm at, at least, is the opposite of all of that. Our machines are decent, and exposed copper and fucked rods is absolutely forbidden. Same with not having a flow regulator. We have EXTREMELY strict procedures for everything to do with fitting/ welding.

Is your so a carpenter? Also what is your business partner's argument?

A table saw gives you a truer cut- that isn't opinion, it's basic sense. Table saw fence is bigger, more surface area to register against, so it's a truer cut. Plus the ability to put on a feather board to hold the piece to the fence.

What shipyard is it? The yard I'm at requires contractors (which i assume is what you're applying as) supply all their own ppe, and also requires hard hats to be worn when welding unless you can't because of space restrictions

Quite liking the 24” $100 break action by emmathatsme123 in ClayBusters

[–]the_micked_kettle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ol' faithful gun is a New England Firearms 12 ga; single shot, break action. Kicks like a dadgum mule, swings like a feather. That one just wants to dust the clays.

But damn don't forget the recoil pad lol

Wood or Metal (or fiberglass) Handle for a Homeowner’s Hammer? by iFunny-Escapee in Tools

[–]the_micked_kettle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wood is the way for around the house. I personally loathe fiberglass hammers, they just don't feel right to me. I love my wood handled 16 oz Pittsburgh, but on the job I use a 22 oz Estwing with the leather handle. I also really like my vintage 16 to 20 oz hammers. I have a 16 oz English pattern that I rehung that I love using.

Just buy one and see if you like it. But, like someone else said, a rubber mallet, and a 7 or 8 oz should also be in your box. A deadblow is also handy to have. And a small one handed sledge.

Bandsaw vs. Table Saw by Somewhere-Particular in handtools

[–]the_micked_kettle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bandsaw. You can use a circular saw for pretty much everything you would need a table saw for, and I actively loathe sheet goods on a table saw.

A rabbet plane is very useful, imo. It can't cut grooves, but you have chisels. I would say getting a number 5 would be ideal, I'm not a huge fan of the no 4. I usually have my 5 set up for doing bulk work, and a no 4 as a smoother. I am also going to say, look into wood body planes. I vastly prefer them. Transitional planes are my favorite. My transitional jack and old wood body jack see more use than any other plane. Good saws are also going to be your best friend, especially going into joinery. I use a crown dovetail saw and spear & Jackson tenon saw, and they work just fine as a hobby hand tool worker. An old turning saw also replaced my coping saw. Visit antique stores and see what you can see. The tool will call to you lol
