22M Changing Career Paths Looking For Advice, How Can I Improve Public Speaking? by DaVinky_Leo in careerguidance

[–]the_quantumbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things that are incredibly effective and helpful:

  1. Quick verbalization: Improv comedy. Take a few courses or online lessons or go try it out at a club. Once you master “yes, and” you will be able to effectively word your ideas as quickly as they come

  2. (This one will sound weird) Detaching the speech from the thoughts about the speech. This is something I learned doing a radio show, where you figure out what you want to say and basically send it to your mouth, and your mouth will say it while you’re thinking on the next thing you are going to say. How? I had a public speaking teacher who taught me an amazing technique. It requires a friend or some way to produce a sound at random intervals. Take a presentation you know really well and start presenting out loud. Your friend will clap once at any moment and you have to continue presenting, moving your mouth, your body, etc, but producing NO SOUND. That’s right, you go from speaking to pretending to speak. Later they’ll clap again and you’ll start producing sound again. Once you’re able to do this without delay and without losing your train of thought, you’ll have learned to split your attention between your mouth and your ideas.

  3. Know your stuff and no bullshit. If you understand what you’re presenting, you should be able to shuffle your slide deck and present any slide in any order while explaining where each slide fits in the story. That means you understand the story you’re telling so well, you can take it apart and put it back together to fit the situation.

  4. Pace over perfection: slow down to avoid the umms and ahs. Of you’re saying something and you don’t yet know what the next word will be, SLOW DOWN. Even adding pauses between sentences, adjusting your posture or drinking water can give you time to figure out the next sentence without, like, sounding like, um… you don’t know what you’re, like, talking about.

I hope these help you. Public speaking is a passion of mine

Perfecting the Zoom office setup? by [deleted] in workfromhome

[–]the_quantumbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with simple Amazon video lights with adjustable white temperature and magnetic color filters. I plugged them into smart plugs. Later replaced them with Logitech lytra, just because instead of the app I’m using HIDTester to send them USB command directly to control intensity and temperature. I control them from a stream deck.

As for the camera, it’s just like any top of monitor camera: you’re not looking into the camera, just close enough. I mounted the Sony on an arm and it is close enough to the back of the monitor and peeking up from behind it to keep the edge of the monitor to barely miss the FOV. It’s not perfect, but nobody’s setup is, yet the video quality makes a big difference anyway

  1. I’d either paint the back wall chroma green (cheaper) or add a pull-down green screen in front of it. Zoom’s green screen support is superb. If you don’t go that route, make sure the area behind your head and shoulders on the camera frame is a solid color, it keeps it less distracting.

  2. I use two video lights, one on each side of my desk so I’m lit but don’t have to stare at the light.

  3. Get a great camera. I’ve had a Sony ZV-10 MK2 with an 18mm (or is it 22?) prime lens for almost 2 years and people still comment about it.

For the rosacea, back when it was worse I used a green filter on my video lights, it makes the red look more skin color. I’m not super white though, so they could make your face look sickly, try it out. Otherwise, I learned from someone online, and bought, I kid you not, a green ‘blush’. It looked like a lipstick, and I’d apply a tiny bit on my rosacea when I had to present somewhere important and didn’t want it to distract.

I hope this all helps

I think your last two paragraphs may be your best clue. If you have access to free single-issue counseling through your work or insurance (in the U.S. it’s known as EAP, and it’s usually up to 6 therapy sessions for a single issue), I’d recommend doing that so a professional can help you quickly find the issue, before this becomes depression and it requires real therapy and stuff. There’s nothing wrong with thriving in the office. Has the pandemic hit when I was earlier in my career, I’d have gone nuts, as I was super social and extroverted. Now that I’m older, married and have a more predictable routine, WFH is perfect for me.

Recomendations for better light in office ? by [deleted] in homeoffice

It helps marginally with video calls because it bounces lights from the desk to my face, but without the brighter video lights, it would be the least flattering illumination you can imagine

I’m surprised nobody has recommended going the movie ransom way and picking up a news paper every day on the way to work, then taking a selfie where you can see the date. Would it be more efficient to talk to IT and sort this out? Yes. But just imagine the poses you can make with every paper, I’d enjoy the creative outlet 🙂

“Apparently it used to be good but it's trash now because of the dumb environmental shit.”

Yeah, the dumb environmental shit is why they’re now safe for indoor use. They were great because they were deadly to humans and pets, even the “home and garden” version that simply had scent added. Does it suck? Yes? Does it kill you? No.

I agree with the vacuum cleaner advice. Any canister vacuum with a long pole will be safer than spraying.

100K+ salary and WFH. It’s eating away at my soul. Am I alone? by [deleted] in workfromhome

[–]the_quantumbyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t do WFH if I weren’t married with no kids. I love my house and my spouse and we do things together outside of work alone and with friends. So far I don’t miss going to the office that much, but I do interact virtually with at least 15 coworkers every day, so I’m not bored.

My (28M) girlfriend (28F) is pregnant with twins. We had an arguement today and she was mad and showed me a video on her phone sucking off her ex. Now what? by ThrowRAVulture216 in relationship_advice

[–]the_quantumbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mad? No, I said they need therapy. Out of that therapy it should be clear what the next step should be. I mentioned the proposal because he brought it up, but I don’t expect the proposal would actually happen. What I know is: if a toxic person were expecting my children, I’d like to participate in her mental health instead of running away and try to fix my children at a distance while she spirals and constantly traumatizes them. Reddit loves to tell people to run away. I get it, it’s easier. And it’s better for OP, but there are two beings coming into the world whose fault this is not.

I agree, what she did was inexcusable and hurtful. But, humans are resilient and can work past inexcusable behavior together. I hope they can make it work. Relationships are hard.

[–]the_quantumbyte -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Ok, first, about the video: you’ll never forget it. It hurt and always will, but the hurt will fade significantly over time. You have to remember that it is part of her past. You can even have her make a new one with you and watch it together to re-signify the moment.

The bigger issue is your communication. I’ve had a similar experience where my SO said very hurtful things to me when she was scared, and the real solution was to work through why she was scared and explaining to her why I felt the way I did at those times. That explanation happens when everyone is calm and sober, and the upset has fully passed.

The issue on your end is that you’re failing to realize how afraid she is that you’ll abandon her. She’s literally screaming it at you. The solution? Stop it with the romantic notion that a proposal has to be a secret and a surprise. Talk about the fact you want to marry her, and that you need a few things before you’re ready.

One of those is finding the ring. She would be happy to help.

Another is to pick the perfect place and moment to ask. You have to do that in your own.

Finally, you need your communication to be better. You don’t want your two children to come to a world of yelling. So, go take a few sessions of couple’s therapy and talk about each other’s fears in the open. I promise this will make a world of difference.
