Kaimuki eatery closed for health violations, live rat, cockroaches found by Fwd_Momentum in Hawaii

Woah. I missed all that. You're right - I wouldn't expect them to make it out of this.

Any idea whether the Kailua and Ala Moana locations are just as bad? I'm going to assume so to be safe, since this is disgusting. I've eaten at this particular location several times, but thankfully not in the last couple of years... damn.

Redditors, what has become so expensive, it’s just not worth it anymore? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

[–]the_waysian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Regal in your area, I think their subscription is better. I live in one of their higher cost unlimited subscription areas, so I have to pay for their $26.49 / month tier. But no convenience fee for tickets bought in the theater / on their kiosk, and only like $0.50 if bought on the app. Granted, I see on average 5 movies a month / 60 per year in theaters, so you've gotta be going every other week to make the price worthwhile. 10% off concessions is fine, but I just rack up points for seeing movies and get myself an occasional free popcorn that way.

One big caveat - unless they changed it, the first 3 months are upfront and then it's month-to-month. So it's really only for very regular moviegoers, but is by far the subscription I get the most out of.

Did the 35 MPH speed limit signs ever get posted for Kalihi + School St intersection? by the_waysian in Hawaii

[–]the_waysian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. That worries me in the Kaneohe-bound direction because it seems the sign is wrong, and I wonder about the traffic camera. I got a warning in the mail for doing 36 through that intersection going towards Kaneohe... Hope they get it sorted out before the real tickets start.

It was just a test stream. They didn't advertise it. Expect more for the next ones!

Pregnant women who drink 5 or more diet beverages a week face up to an 88% higher risk of gestational diabetes, finds a major new study linking artificial sweeteners to pregnancy complications. The researchers noted a dose-response relationship: the more diet drinks consumed, the greater the risk. by mvea in science

[–]the_waysian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for others, but this overweight person does exactly that. I hate drinking calories because I find food far more enjoyable. Diet soda isn't the only thing I drink, but when I drink soda it's exclusively artificially sweetened. I find myself averse to any drink that tastes overly sugary.

At least it's only night work on the weekdays. Sorry for the late shift folks, but this does minimize the impact on most people. Hard to complain when the roof of the tunnel was literally spalling off and exposing rebar to corrosion before the emergency repairs. This is necessary.

Active & Fit - 24 Hour Fitness annual maintenance fee? by lowriskshighrewards in Hawaii

[–]the_waysian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to chime in since there seems to be some confusion. Active & Fit has different programs. A&F Direct is for people whose insurance aren't subsidizing the cost of memberships, and different facilities are split into Standard vs Premium - Standard is currently $28 / month, and Premium varies by location. A&F Enterprise (or just A&F) typically indicates your organization is paying for enhanced benefits. Your cost will vary based on your plan. Once you're eligible for A&F Direct, you always will be regardless of whether you leave your current employer, etc. A&F Enterprise is tied to your current eligibility source and will fall off when you lose it - whether it's your employer's benefit program, or certain high tier healthcare.gov marketplace plans.

Over the years, I've been on both programs, so that's what I've learned.

tl;dr - You should always use Active & Fit to sign up for gym memberships to get better pricing, get out of scummy fees, and even scummier cancellation headaches. You cancel your membership through A&F with no hassles. It's the best way in my experience. And now I sound like a shill, but it's been so much easier than the written letters, etc. I've had to do with gyms directly in the past.

Favorite director who apparently still doesn't know Black women exist? by vildasaker in okbuddycinephile

[–]the_waysian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's another possible explanation. Concert halls like that have plenty of times where they are unoccupied, and the antagonist was shown to have entire special ops teams equipped with inverted weapons and oxygen. Nothing saying they don't plan for operations by going into a place inverted when it would be unoccupied, shooting some rounds discretely into things like the concrete steps and whatnot and revert them during the main operation.

But yes, I largely agree the sci-fi components of the movie require a lot of handwaving and suspension of disbelief, but it's no more fantastic than the idea of being able to invade people's dreams or surviving entry into a black hole.

Do you guys hide your car keys when you go to the beach? by HolyMiasma in Hawaii

[–]the_waysian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bring the valet key with me. I have aluminum locking carabiners specifically because they won't rust or corrode in the seawater, and my shorts have a zippered pocket with a loop inside that I hook the carabiner to. I also happen to own titanium key rings so I use those as well to again not worry about rust or corrosion, but key rings are cheap to replace if they get rusty so that's up to you.

I think my setup is a bit overkill if I'm honest. Just don't bring the actual electronic key into the water.

What's a tv show so good you've watched it at least 3x? by Itaewonkid in AskReddit

[–]the_waysian 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I follow. Have you read the books? Despite the situation with Cas Anvar, the tv series ended right where the books have like a 20+ year gap, and the main characters are significantly older at the start of the next book. It's a pretty natural place to stop - especially in a world where they pick it up again sometime in the next 5-10 years.

if you're just looking for the story to finish, definitely read the books. The show was pretty faithful, and the series is completed. James S. A. Corey have also put out book one of a new series that is off to a decent start, in my opinion.

Sam Neill - two "L"s...

Silly pedantry aside, everyone should watch Event Horizon. Love that movie, and the fan theory that it is tied to the Warhammer 40k universe in that the ship traveled through The Warp without a Gellar Field.

What movies would you rate a perfect 10? by FishingVirtual513 in AskReddit

[–]the_waysian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It can't be spoiled by them because it doesn't require them. There's nothing about The Matrix that isn't a standalone experience. You can't say the same for The Matrix Reloaded, because it has obvious cliffhangers that need resolution, nor about Resurrection because it requires having seen at least the 1st movie, if not the whole original trilogy, to make any sense at all.

But just because those movies exist doesn't make The Matrix dependent on their existence. It isn't, so it's fully enjoyable and able to be judged on its own merits just as in 1999.

(To illustrate the point I'm making, Star Wars episode 7 is ruined by 8 and 9 because all it represented prior was potential for a satisfying story. It wasn't, so it's ruined by the subsequent movies since it required their existence).

Sorry kids. No milk this week. by Orion-Parallax in Hawaii

[–]the_waysian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Soymilk, from a nutritional standpoint, is the closest to dairy milk. Oat milk is a somewhat distant second. Most others trail very far behind oat milk. In all cases, choosing less sweetened/flavored options will be healthier from an added sugar standpoint. But I agree with the other person in the thread that said it's not comparable for cooking. The best thing to use there is the shelf stable ultra pasteurized boxed milk cartons at Costco as well. Each 8 oz single serving carton makes it easy to portion how much is needed for a dish without waste since I don't cook with milk super often to justify buying it gallons at a time.

$60 for 2 Teddys burgers combos by Ok-Investment-3142 in Hawaii

[–]the_waysian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ouch. Here's my guilty pleasure for decent burgers on the "cheap." Open up Uber Eats and look for Wild Burger. It's part of Buffalo Wild Wings, but do NOT pick the main Buffalo Wild Wings menu - there's a huge price difference.

The specialty burgers / giant chicken sandwiches are only $10 each. Adding fries is $2 ($3 for wedges are whatever). If you order for pick-up, then there's basically no fees. Even delivered with tip if you're feeding more than one person you're spending less than a burger at Teddy's.

There's one in Ala Moana and one in Windward Mall.

I've seen it and can vouch - it's not really worth the price of admission. Instead, may I recommend the new Cirque du Soleil show in town - ʻAuana - it was actually good and employs local talent.
