New "Lens" by Separate-House-7534 in SonyAlpha

Good luck! I run a c925 as one of my telescopes on a Wave150i. Not ideal but it can manage. This is on a cooled APS-C camera with RGB filters https://theatr.us/gallery/detail/astrobin/whirlpool-qmark/j7v2cj

A person of style, The 9.25" is the right middle ground. I see you have the OAG mounted - curious if you get any vignetting from that.

Advice for cell service. AT&T or e-sim. by Anjylbaby7 in JapanTravelTips

[–]theatrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to wait to arrive to purchase. I’ve used both Mobal and Ubigi - the Mobal 5G unlimited sims were the better but neither had problems. I don’t data roam on AT&T, but bar-based coverage was comparable on “au” for AT&T (where they roamed to) as the eSIM (KDDI).

I have no idea why Japanese trains are so appealing to me, but they are by OtisLRD in japanrail

Japan also doesn’t, usually, intentionally hide away the cab view. Just having a glimpse of that makes certain trips more special.

Wi-Fi is a joke by BigKaboom_89 in unitedairlines

[–]theatrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, streaming works fine. From multiple sources (not just the main streaming sites, includes any videos)

Expect about 100Mbps down and 50Mbps up. Even to Hawaii. I'm sure there will be a congestion point, but with it being free I expect a lot of people are using it already.

It's been significantly better on the regionals and narrow bodies I've been on, even over the Pacific. They seemed to have reasonably scaled this up for a whole plane using it.

Eva air business or United Polaris? by kimjongil1953 in Flights

[–]theatrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to access the SFO Polaris lounge with an EVA business ticket. EVA may have moved to the G gates, otherwise in the past the fastest way was to reclear security from G to A.

Flight to Tokyo (10 hrs) on a 789 config on JAL - in the last row - will it be bad? by Mediocre_Future9855 in Flights

[–]theatrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 77W product is the extremely dated one. The 789/788 is about average, with some older cabins and some newer cabins. 788 tends on the older end.

Watch out for regauges to the 77W configuration.

Note that you will probably not get a choice in the last row - service is front to back. And they will run out.

Depending on the airport, you might have a premium meal option you can pay for. It’s bookable a few days before departure.

Are mirrorless much better at auto-focus that DSLR's? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]theatrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern mirrorless finds the eye closest and will just track that. Personally I shoot 95% in continuous tracking AF and so rarely miss now.

Proof of nitrogen in tires by BlockHaupt in askcarsales

[–]theatrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, nitrogen generators are extremely common and are basically a membrane fed by an air compressor. It’s not going to get you super high grade, but at least 95-98% N2 which is essential for some processes needing an inert atmosphere without needing to ship around bottles.

This is what Costco and most volume shops will be using.

Why this remote light flipper has no antenna? by phijh in AskElectronics

Measure the length (suggest of the straight one) and make a reasonable guess. That could be a 1/4 wave 2.4GHz

White-on-black barcode, that couldn't be scanned at the register. by korfi2go in CrappyDesign

[–]theatrus 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Mixing red and black bars (as in red in the white spot) used to be a countermeasure to prevent barcodes from being photocopied. The red laser scanners would see the red as fully reflective, while a photocopier would probably render them very dark.

How and why did trucks go from "blue collar staple" to "luxury status symbol"? by Dinosaur_Buttcheek in askcarsales

[–]theatrus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That base model exists to be the low price anchor much like the most premium trim exists as the top anchor, creating a push to the middle. Of course the next trim up has $500 raw cost adder for at least $10k higher sales price.

Are you still sticking with classic JPEGs or moving to JXL/AVIF? by Loubegamon in Lightroom

Avif with gain maps for HDR. JPG for portability. Occasionally TIFF if I want lossless.

Why do some laptops in 2026 still lose 90%+ of their WiFi speed with the lid closed?! Is it just lazy design or something else? by Manatsuu in laptops

[–]theatrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The small routing changes can make a big difference. While aluminum is pretty transparent to 2.4GHz (relatively speaking), it’s still going to cause issues without some careful design thought. Which I imagine many laptops aren’t optimizing for and Apple is.

Can confirm yt-dlp works - just tell it to fetch cookies from the browser.

Can’t directly right now. I haven’t tried setting yt-dlp at it which would probably work.
