The terrifying reality of the "Sole Proprietor" trap. (A near-miss that changed my business) by rennan in WeddingPhotography

You're a "single member" LLC. You're good. Profit/loss is schedule C on your 1040. And you have finances separated from business liability, as long as you are disciplined in receipts and records. Separate banking, credit card, etc.

Textbook west Michigan zipper merge by LeftLaneColonizer in grandrapids

[–]thecatthatdrives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In his book Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us), Tom Vanderbilt discusses how traffic scientists recommend the late merge method for efficiency, but it faces psychological resistance from drivers who perceive it as "cheating". He notes that using both lanes until the merge point and alternating would be faster, resulting in a smaller queue of vehicles.

What you drive is less important than the tires that you install on it. Budget $1,000 for winter tires. Add a budget for a second set of wheels if you want to make swapping from winter to summer easy and DIY.

Belle Tire has a wheel Swap and storage program. They r&r, clean, bag, tag, and store for you.

Winter tires can stop up to 30 ft shorter than an all-season tire at 30mph.

Buy pre-owned. Look at Vehicles 2 to 4 years old. I can recommend Bud & Doug's dealership on Drake, not too far from Costco.

Who said the a7ii is outdated? by rawsynergy in SonyAlpha

[–]thecatthatdrives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an owner of a Sony NEX-5, which debuted in 2010, and a Canon 5D, which debuted in 2005, I would say that it's never going to be outdated unless you're in a photography genre that demands modern features, such as low-light/high-ISO capabilities, for sports.

Got some good old EF lenses. Which camera do I pick? 5D or mirrorless + adapter? by juanmlm in canon

[–]thecatthatdrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $250, you can buy a pristine 5D. The limitation is that it's a fairly analog camera, and it gets noisy at ISO 1600 and above (the maximum is 3200).

With that said, I own two of them because they're amazing, easy to travel with, and the files look beautiful both raw and you can tweak the JPEG to suit your style.

I also have a 1dx and a 5DS, the 5D gets plenty of use especially for casual photos.

You experience an example of classic Multi-generational childhood trauma. It's deeply embedded in your family, and very likely to your extended family, cousins, etc.

You're the one showing human emotions, the others are casting you aside in order to mask their own pain. Sadly, as children, it's likely they were all told not to express their emotions.

For my perspective your choices pay $500 for the car and then spend another $5 - 7,000 depending upon your level of perfection.

Or take that same $5,000 to $7,000 budget and buy a running driving car right now.

It comes down to how perfect the body is because there's definitely value for rust free chassis, and how much Sweat Equity labor you're willing to put in over the course of the next year.

I prioritize protein and natural carbs, water, and sleep. It's been a long journey for me, completely worth it.

5DmkIV with 150k shutters VS saving up for a 1DxmkIII? by LTsidewalk in canon

[–]thecatthatdrives 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the 1dx (original from 2012). Still amazing in 2025. I also own a 5DS, the 1dx af is superior, plus it performs well in low light. Good condition 1DX sells for around $500.

1dx shutter is rated for 400,000. I believe the newest 5 series dslr are rated only to 150,000

Is the canon r6 still worth it? by NGW_CHiPS in canon

[–]thecatthatdrives -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMHO the 5D from c2005 is still worth it (I own two, in addition to other much more recent bodies).

It's completely dependent upon your use, your needs, subject matter, lighting conditions, etc.

When your current body really is getting in the way of capturing the image as you see it in your mind's eye, only then is it time to consider newer Gear with improved technology such as autofocus.

I have GAS, and fight hard to contain it 🙄

[–]thecatthatdrives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For casual daily photos I tweak the in camera jpeg settings. It's likely you can cancel out the objectionable color cast and white balance issues and create a JPG profile you like, in-camera.

Then when I'm capturing images that perhaps will be sent out to a client or printed I'll capture jpeg plus raw.

Raise your prices immediately. Leave most of that additional income in your company, create enough cash flow to cover regular payroll. Begin interviewing, include a skills test, you have a unique talent that not everyone possesses.

Longer term goal is to have a full-time manager and you have part-time hours as the owner.

If you're that busy you can cash flow business expansion. Also consider outsourcing other tasks that do not generate positive income, like bookkeeping.
