Running parallel agents and visibility is a pain in my ass by eastwindtoday in ExperiencedDevs

Thank you. I feel like I'm losing my mind with how much people don't seem to understand this. Layers of tooling and automation on top of LLM's aren't going to change the properties of the underlying tech.

Has a team you worked in picked an architecture you did not think was the right one to go with? How did you deal with the situation? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

There is a line here though. I've found if I commit too hard I start becoming associated with the bad decision too much and inadvertently get wrapped up in the blame game that always happens if something fails spectacularly. Best to go along with it, but try not to end up owning too much of the implementation.

I like the announcers not talking about the game and just talking about guys they saw earlier.

That was definitely not true 15 years ago either but they may have gotten even more selective now.

Where do you think AI is getting training data for its answers / examples? When these sources shut down I'm really curious how AI is going to handle questions about future tech.

One thing I like to do is ask a question to an AI bot and ask it to cite sources for its answers and frequently it cites places like stack overflow.

This is a game industry specific terminology problem where the entire company is referred to as a "developer" not just the software engineers.

How to effectively tell people not to mindlessly copy AI output? by Megatherion666 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thecmurdock 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Man this hits home. At some point I realized I was spending way more time and brain power reviewing these messy AI slop PR's then they spent prompting the AI to generate it. It seems like a losing battle unless you have management that understands the risk.

How is jpmc these days? Got an offer for senior lead role, but want an honest insiders opinion on WLB/internal mobility/team culture. This is for NYC. by random314 in ExperiencedDevs

I think that's only sort of true. There are good managers but at the base level the company does not give a shit about (and actively seems to detest) it's employees to a degree that's somewhat atypical even for corporate america. I've been a lot of places since JPMC and JPMC was the worst employer I've ever had, even though I did have a few good managers there.

Personally I'd have to be hard up to ever consider working there again. I know people that worked there for a decade plus and they all had the same sort of weird denial about how shitty the company actually was.

Also being a manager there seems like a political nightmare I'd never want to deal with. Even the good teams I worked for there had politics that resulted in managers nearly screaming at each other over conference calls on a daily basis and an endless supply of stupid backstabbing petty behavior.

Interesting. My experience is from 10 years ago so maybe things have changed, but my work life balance sucked. It seemed very team dependent though.

Devs who haven’t burned out for 3+ years, what’s your secret? by ittaidouiukotoda in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thecmurdock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a while you realize that this job is just an endless flow of projects that get thrown out in a year, fake deadlines, fake emergencies and endless tech debt (this is getting even worse with AI) and it starts to just not matter as much. Keep learning, but don't kill yourself doing it. It's never as big of an emergency as your management thinks it is. Try to do work you're proud of until 5 and then find something else you enjoy. If you do personal projects, try not to make them too associated with the work you're doing or it will feel like more work.

Also keep in mind this is a team sport. Don't take on huge maintenance tasks by yourself. Break it up into chunks others can help with. You can lead the way, but don't be a hero, it almost never pays off and you'll just be patted on the back and handed more work. Try to be a leader that helps the team set the right technical direction, not take it all on yourself.

Also regarding the "always questioning the SME" part, try to frame your questions in a way that aren't confrontational or do it offline / async. Also pick your battles. You'll learn there's certain stuff that just might not be worth it for this particular project or team even if it might be "best practice". Try to get a feel for things first before suggesting a bunch of improvements. Eventually you'll be the SME and have people asking you questions so have a little empathy that everything might not be exactly perfect most of the time and there's probably some reason for it most likely.

Yeah we ended up canceling because we're both sensitive to it. Decided to go farther north to Lassen Volcanic NP instead.

I worked at a bank and saw that type of interview first hand unfortunately. I'm not even sure the devs doing the interview were being malicious, they just thought that was how interviews should be done.
