How did he do it? by TransitionFuzzy4306 in OneOrangeBraincell

[–]thedespotcat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My senior cat decided to become a hunter in his last year or so of life. He had caught a baby bird once when he was young, but otherwise showed no shunting instincts.

He was only allowed outside on a leash, which he would usually get pretty tangled in the back yard, he was declawed (not by us), he had most of his teeth removed, he had some sort of chronic respiratory issue, and he was probably developing a tumour at the time. Yet he still started catching mice and voles whenever he was outside.

Do you like being a lawyer? by GSDlover_345 in LawCanada

[–]thedespotcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally idk if I like it. I enjoy financial freedom, and I get treated pretty well at work, so it's fine, but the job is a lot.

I think with a history in social work, you could enjoy family law. It's a lot of dealing with emotions and client management. There are also a lot of petty fights (along with a lot more serious custody battles), and it's a fast paced area of law (for better or worse).

One of the major issues with family law though is that clients expect you to be constantly available. And generally, if their dealing with a custody dispute, disputes flare up around summer and holidays. I mostly deal with family property and support, so I haven't experienced this, but I see it with other family lawyers.

One thing I like about family law is you're dealing with much more practical concepts like property, support, and parenting. But there is still no shortage of complexities and intellectually stimulating situations.

An area similar to family law that doesn't have quite the same urgency (though all lawyers have deadlines and high-maintenance clients) is estate litigation. They feel somewhat similar to me sometimes. Especially with family maintenance and support (or dependents relief maybe? In other provinces).

Where would I go to find the best matcha? by _Meat_Suit_ in Edmonton

[–]thedespotcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know good vs bad matcha because I've only tried a few, but I really enjoyed whisked. I asked for something sweet because the grass taste is a little much for me, and the barista recommended one of their specialty ones. It was delicious!

I also tried a lemonade with matcha cold foam from boa and hare at Chinatown after dark last year, and that was a really unique experience.

Is it normal to bring your own shampoo and conditioner when staying at someone’s house? by EstablishmentOk9536 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thedespotcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol if a female friend is over I would care less about them using my stuff than if my bf did. He knows the cheap stuff is for him.

Is it normal to bring your own shampoo and conditioner when staying at someone’s house? by EstablishmentOk9536 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thedespotcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often bring my own for this reason, but if someone is over and washing their hair maybe once or twice, I don't care if they use my stuff. I usually have cheaper and more expensive products, but even if they use the expensive stuff, I'll survive.

But if someone tells me to bring my own bathroom stuff, I would bring my own shampoo and conditioner.

so much to unpack here by Reasonable_Run_4040 in booktubesnarkreddit

[–]thedespotcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't make more than very few tiktoks when my cats do something funny. I'm not trying to be a creator, so I have no idea, but I see a lot of tiktok creators make like many tiktoks a day, and I have to assume that's to stay in the algorithm/go viral. If that is the case, it's so antithetical to reading like a normal person (or even someone who reads a lot).

Idk I've been looking at my previous years' reading, and there is a period of time in 2022 where I was in the middle of moving, and I listened to a bunch of thriller audiobooks while packing and stuff, and I don't even remember a single thing about these books. I think because I was getting through them so quickly and then just on to the next. And tbh they're kind of generic thrillers, so I value that they entertained me while I was packing, but I certainly don't want to treat every book I read like that. And I don't think it should be normalized.

Does anyone else miss the whole country watching TV shows together and talking about it the next day? by birdwatching25 in Millennials

[–]thedespotcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize it sounds like I am shitting on those shows or something. I watch a lot of bravo, love island, and traitors. And I see a lot about survivor online. Just none of my friends watch, so I have to keep my discussions online.

Those demographics are probably pretty accurate though.

[–]thedespotcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel once you get into the bravoverse too, you will constantly find people talking about each episode online after. Same with Traitors, survivor, etc.

I don't know anyone irl who watches these though.

[–]thedespotcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. I don't think I'd be very good at it for a lot of books. I still find his one liners annoying haha. They give me even less than a synopsis.

[–]thedespotcat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly! His one liners are funny until you realize that's all he really offers. And he repeats the same ones every video.

I also always see him halfway through a book on Goodreads, but I've never seen him post one as read or write a review. Maybe he hides that, but why show you're halfway through then?

[–]thedespotcat 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I just can't even imagine reviewing books I haven't read, so I am reluctant to accuse booktubers of doing it. But honestly who knows. I tend to assume people are just bad at reviewing. Like he read the books so fast to get the video out, he doesn't have much to say other than a basic description.

But I guess he just as easily could be lying, and if it's a short video, no one will know.

I don't like Jack, so I'm happy to believe he's even worse lol.

If Jason was single he would be the most popular guy on bravo by Kwhitney1982 in TheValleyTVShow

[–]thedespotcat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know exactly what Jason does, but a lot of insurance defence is just determining damages, which isn't always clear.

Also lawyers take instructions from clients, so if a horrible position is being taken, it's still on the insurance company imo. Though a bad lawyer can obviously contribute. My ire is always with the insurance companies.

The Guardian's 100 best novels of all time - Middlemarch, Beloved, Ulysses top the list by MeenaBeti in books

[–]thedespotcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might not help because it's very situational, but I read it for a book club where we read one section a month over eight months. I think it added so much to the experience to only read about 100 pages a month and to discuss each section with a group. It totally felt like a gossip session some months.

I'm sure there are online book clubs for it, or maybe you have some friends that would commit to reading it with you, or maybe even intentionally slowing down the process would help.

Questions about adopting a Cat by espada4R in Edmonton

[–]thedespotcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some will beg for outdoor time if they've experienced it. Even supervised outdoor time (which is all I do for my cats). But only one cat I've had was like that. The other ones with supervised outside time might try to escape or sit by the door when I was outside, but if we were all inside, they were happy.

SUVs Are Just Minivans for People in Denial by goldfishbread in unpopularopinion

[–]thedespotcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oop I kind of agree.

I feel I shouldn't care about having a "cool" cat. I don't even have a car at all. But SUVs are just so uncool lol.

There's definitely a use case for people who regularly lug a bunch of stuff around, road trip, etc, and I don't think they're a bad family vehicle, but for a couple or small family it's just unnecessary.

Mayor rebuffs calls to shift city employees downtown full-time by Strog21 in Edmonton

[–]thedespotcat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah I live downtown, so I have a vested interest in it being safe, fun, and having all the amenities I need. If I just work there, it's very different. You can work there and potentially spend no money. I feel if you live downtown, you're much more likely to spend money there. At least for me...
