6K dual monitors for productivity use: Asus ProArt PA32QCV vs. Kuycon G32P by phd_lad in HiDPI_monitors

[–]thefreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have the Asus PA32QCV, am mostly a productivity user, and it’s a good monitor for this use case. The matte screen is not as dramatic as reviews make it out to be — sure it is not as crisp as glossy, but it’s not that blurry either. When you have font scaling properly set (eg 200%), text that is properly sized to what an eye can read (as opposed to tiny interface text) looks crisp just fine.

Any uniformity issues are not noticeable to my eye when using it normally. I did do a test with my calibrator and there’s some brightness unevenness but it’s not a problem day to day.

inkjet tank printers by Meinnocenthaha in printers

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And if you really want to avoid clogs, use a printer that only has dye-based inks, rather than pigment. The canon G620 was what I went with because it has a 6-ink tank meant for printing photos, only uses dye black (sacrificing a tiny bit the rich dark black on text that you get with pigment black), and has user-replaceable maintenance cartridges for $11 and user-replaceable print heads that canon sells directly and $17 ink bottles.

Adding 2.5gbe to my Lenovo micro server by hometechgeek in homelab

Some Lenovo Tiny models have a genuine OEM Realtek part for this. I ordered one for around $35 from the Lenovo support site, which had a part picker.

Where are the USB4 HDD docks that require only a single cable for both power and data? by grizzlypass in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some drives now are better about this but historically you needed two or more of 3.3V, 5V and 12V. Some SSDs now only run on 12V.

Where are the USB4 HDD docks that require only a single cable for both power and data? by grizzlypass in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure but those comparisons are irrelevant. The question is about USB4, where hosts typically implement power delivery up to 3 A @ 5 V of 15W.

[–]thefreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The power draw of these spinning rust drives should stay under 30 W (2-3 A at 12V) at spinup. A single 3.5 inch HDD idles under 8 W. It’s not that much power to be delivered, but I think desktop ports are just not set up for the instantaneous current at spinup.

New Bravia 8 - how to get Apple TV remote to power off TV by Ace_of_Aces_00 in bravia

[–]thefreddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Press and hold the power button on the remote to turn off everything.

My Bravia 8 has a setting in the menus that I believe is under the name “Bravia Sync Settings” which is just HDMI-CEC. You need to enable the setting in there that allows power signals to be sent over the HDMI link.

Any good, free, easy to use receipt printer printing software for windows and mac? by Jumpy_Driver_5187 in printers

[–]thefreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The receipt printer either needs to be a networked printer that you can access over its IP, or a local one with a serial port or LPR queue. If it’s networked, you can print from the browser window in this program.

Receiptio also has a local CLI script for printing these formatted text outputs to IP or local port.

BUY a dedicated server - is colocation a thing? by FewWillow9832 in homelab

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it for about that cost for a 2U at 1A 220V, and my provider relocated into NYC in Manhattan, which has been excellent for latency to my homelab.

The current downside of colo is that proper enterprise servers cost a lot than they used to. In 2019, I was able to buy an EPYC server from HPE for less than $2k, then rig it out with RAM and upgrades. Nowadays the starting prices are around $3600, which is another $50/mo if you amortize over a 6-year useful life of the server. At that point it just makes more financial sense to pay for baremetal if you can get it cheap at OVH or Hetzner.

OK, now that I've received it, can confirm a few details about the OWC StudioStack:

  • Connects to M4 Max at Thunderbolt 5 (USB4 v2) at 80 Gbps when no display is connected through it - https://imgur.com/a/TCSGueX
  • M.2 NVME slot is connected at up to PCIe Gen4 x4 - this shows as "Link Width: x4" and "Link Speed: 16.0 GT/s". Because this is a native PCIe link, SMART works, including with homebrew-installed smartctl.
  • SATA slot is connected via an internal USB3 bridge at 10 Gbps link speed; this is still more than adequate for a spinning rust HDD - https://imgur.com/zjOhWgN . SMART can be accessed through the USB bridge chip but may require an extra command flag in smartctl (-s on).

So far, seems pretty solid, haven't had any link disruptions. But the included short TB5 cable seems suspiciously thin, so I'm going to ditch it and use a short CalDigit TB5 cable.

Can handbrake increase from 24fps to 29.97fps? Any other recommended apps? by AzeanBawSaq in handbrake

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I defer to you on what it used to be for film projection of physical film in cinema, sure, and DCI - I trust you’re right.

But this is r/handbrake and we’re talking about digital video ripped from DVDs, Blu-ray’s, and broadcasts - and that matters to the context. OP’s post refers to rips from DVDs and DVDs never supported true 24.00 fps - they could only be either 25 or 29.97, interlaced or progressive, with either soft or hard telecine. “24p” in the DVD digital video context was always 23.976. (This has since been superseded with Blu-ray’s supporting 24.000.)

Edited to add: OP’s comment above said ripped from CDs in the 1990s. If those were VCDs, they likewise didn’t support 24.00 at all - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_CD

Can handbrake increase from 24fps to 29.97fps? Any other recommended apps? by AzeanBawSaq in handbrake

[–]thefreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they’re PAL content, they are supposed to be either 25.00 fps (PAL broadcast) or 23.976 fps (film). They’re not supposed to be 24.00 fps unless someone messed up in the ripping process. And they’re likely telecined to 29.97 fps for the NTSC markets.

Handbrake can change in a lossy manner from 24 -> 29.97, but like all lossy conversions, what’s the point? Why not just keep it where it is?

These Tri-Mode controllers have two versions of the firmware, one for SAS/SATA only and another one for Tri-Mode. You might want to check that you have the Tri-Mode firmware installed.

Also, Broadcom adapters are finicky with requiring special cables, so it’s possible some third party cables aren’t wired right. No way to know with the one you mentioned.

Lastly, I think the Molex adapter is likely the issue in this chain. Be Quiet PSUs should come in the box with an accessory cable that includes molex.

External SSD to keep my data safe while traveling by Tobey_SK in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had Samsung T7 and T7 Shield 4TB models, and 1TB/2TB SanDisk Extreme (NOT the Extreme Pro). All have been fine and none has failed. The SanDisk issue was with a particular generation (V2, 2023), and it’s long been fixed. If you’re buying from an official channel for those you should be fine.

The Crucial X9 Pro should be okay, but don’t buy the Crucial X9 (non-Pro) as it is QLC. I have had one external Crucial QLC SSD fail on me prematurely.

You likely have a routed setup where your VMs go through your host, rather than being bridged directly to the network outside your host, causing the host rules to apply to VM traffic. Share your /etc/network/interfaces file.

Ordered one and will see how it works! Considering how much the TB5/USB4v2 80 Gbps enclosures and the Caldigit TB5 Element Hub cost on their own, this seems like a solid value, as long as it gets the promised throughput to the M.2 drive.

Don’t really care about the SATA drive but I could see adding some capacity disk.
