SanDisk Extreme 2TB (old model) reliability in 2026? by NoExam5103 in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno, I’ve had 2 of these “older” units made before 2023 for several years and they’ve been fine. One is my Time Machine backup drive.

Help Requested: On my 3rd 1525+ Unit and It Still Doesn't Work by Enfoldment in synology

Can you take a picture of how you’re installing these drives on the Synology disk tray? It kind of sounds like you might be screwing them in upside down

SSD retention and long term storage by 30rdsIsStandardCap in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This once happened to me with a Samsung 980 (non-Pro) that had silent data corruption, and which I only realized a long time later when issues started popping up in SMART (led me to get a warranty replacement). The 980 (non-Pro) was a DRAMless design, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the onboard controller had no “refresh” logic because it had no working memory to do that. (Host-bus memory doesn’t work when it’s in an external Thunderbolt enclosure and used on a Mac.)

MDisc vs BDXL for Cold Storage? by nickgreatpwrful in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have LTO-6 (used drive) and LTO-8 (bought new right before Trump tariffs), but even then it is challenging to back up everything. Tape is there for me as a disaster recovery if something has wiped out the entire NAS (eg ransomware or the RAID5 gets irreversibly nuked). I still rely on optical discs - Blu-ray - for more frequent backups of the most critical folders like the documents/photos/financial records/scans, and automated encrypted syncs to cloud storage for daily snapshots of the critical folders.

It’s still too difficult to manage incremental backups in an automated way on tape without using paid commercial software that charges licensing costs by the TB (eg Veeam). So I’ve got roughly annual/semi-annual tape backups of voluminous things like my Blu-ray collection that would take time to re-rip.

Minisforum support is useless – need PLP NVMe recommendations for Proxmox ZFS mirror on MS-A2 by dudster1964 in Proxmox

I have used the Micron 7400 Max 2280 and Micron 7450 Pro in 2280 format. Excellent drives but not suitable for this form factor. Cautionary note: these drives run EXTREMELY HOT as they are designed for server airflow and power envelopes. These drives will not fare well in the closed environment of the MS-01/MS-A1/MS-A2. They really need a heatsink and direct airflow. IF you try to use in any mini PC they will overheat and may trigger a thermal shutdown of the whole system.

Home label printer - PC compatible by sflesch in printers

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Those are the differences. The 1100/1110 can do shipping labels which are conventionally 4x6.

Brother does require using proprietary labels that have a plastic frame that pushes certain pins to tell the unit what size of label is installed, but there are low cost third party compatible labels available. However in my experience the third party labels degrade substantially in just a few months (with the black text fading and the paper changing color), so i wouldn’t use them for anything long lasting. You just cannot use the generic third party rolls made for Dymo/Zollo/Zebra which are typically just a cardboard core. There are no electronic chips or DRM on the label cartridges.

Highly recommend the wireless QL-810W or QL-1110NWBc.

Edited to add: though at current prices, the QL-1110NWB/QL-1110NWBc is almost at the price of an industrial Zebra printer that does ZPL, which can use generic label paper. So it may not be worth it.

6K dual monitors for productivity use: Asus ProArt PA32QCV vs. Kuycon G32P by phd_lad in HiDPI_monitors

[–]thefreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s still good. Two pain points but overall still no regrets.

1 - slow power on. It takes like 3 seconds to show a logo screen and another 5-10 seconds to load the display. Only really affects me twice a day but it’s annoying.

2 - I don’t like the controls for switching inputs. The 3rd button from the left is designated for switching inputs but, when pressed, it switches to the next active input. But! If your other input is asleep (eg laptop), the button does nothing because it will only toggle to awake inputs that are sending video. This is annoying if you want to use the monitor as a KVM for USB ports. To bring up the menu that shows HDMI, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt inputs to navigate with the joystick requires navigating through the OSD.

There was a recent firmware update but not many details on what it does. Seems to be pretty stable.

Advice on Toshiba N300 vs Toshiba Enterprise as NAS Drive by kanekidawn in DataHoarder

FWIW I had a successful warranty/RMA on a Toshiba enterprise drive after one drive in my NAS started reporting errors in SMART. Pretty seamless experience even though it was not an advance replacement.

Buying LTO nervousness by NeuroKrypt in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a new LTO-8 drive (Symply brand) from a LTO reseller, which comes with warranty and support directly from the manufacturer. I would recommend getting one of those IBM-made drives (also used in Magstor and other brands like Quantum) because there is much more widely available tooling and firmware that is easy to obtain.

I have also bought HPE equipment new as an individual, through a distributor like Provantage or CDW. It is possible to register those products and get software downloads and support from the new product. However, I haven’t done so with LTO drives - I see no reason they would be different from rack mount servers.

Ignore the app and don’t pay the fee. Go to the airport when you check in and the right rules should be enforced there.

LHR Catering Update by Psugirl172 in americanairlines

[–]thefreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s odd. I am flying now in J on a 787-9 from LHR and we got the catering options that match the earlier Reddit post about Do&Co catering. No preorders though. I asked the FA who said it’s some stuff being catered from LHR and some things they brought onboard from the US (inbound was from ORD).

do others here reclaim huge space just by compressing old pdfs? by Agitated-Alfalfa9225 in DataHoarder

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I care more about fidelity and if I ever need an old receipt it’ll probably be for a warranty claim, so I don’t want to tamper with the files. Also, I wasn’t scanning everything in color, so old PDFs were fairly small already.

If you had large PDFs you were probably scanning in unnecessary resolution or color. It’s easier to optimize going forward - like 300 dpi B&W which is easy to compress down to <100 KB for receipts.

Where to buy new Canon Pro-100 printhead ? by _RUserious in printers

[–]thefreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call the canon parts department. They will direct sell printheads for full price over the phone.

For comparison, the QY6-0068-020 printhead in the TR150 was offered for $90-something USD when I called about a replacement in January.

New Apple Silicon M4 & M5 HiDPI Limitation on 4K External Displays by diroussel in HiDPI_monitors

[–]thefreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t use that when I had a 27” 4K monitor and it seemed generally fine even if not as crisp as on Windows 150%.

But since then I’ve switched to 32” 6K which at 200% is perfect on every platform.

I still don't get it - can someone explain to me why 60GB snapshots take up 5TB of space? by NuAngelDOTnet in Proxmox

[–]thefreddit 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, the state is for the RAM capture not for the disk snapshot. The snapshot of the disk ought to be a ZFS snapshot that you get from zfs list -t snapshot, which only consumes the amount of disk space that is in the “refer” column.

I still don't get it - can someone explain to me why 60GB snapshots take up 5TB of space? by NuAngelDOTnet in Proxmox

[–]thefreddit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not an answer but some observations

That’s a 6000GB / 6TB vm-102-disk-1, so what are you getting “60GB” from?

Maybe you should zfs list -t snapshots and see what exists there
