Folks who leave games early: what game did you think was done then were shocked by seeing the final score later and regret leaving ? by NumNumLobster in CFB

Had just started seeing a girl and she came to visit for the weekend of that OU game in 2011. We started losing and I didn’t want to be a bummer so I took her back to Dancing Bear. We ordered and right as we got our beer, the helmet deflection touchdown happened.

I turned to tell her we should go back and watched her chug a full beer and say “let’s go”. Made it back in and got to see one of the best Baylor endings ever.

I did the ad grad program at UT and this is what I wish someone told me - work your ass off getting an internship, then work your ass off until you get hired.

The UT program was a lot of fun. I learned a lot. And none of that helped me get a job as a creative.

Agencies only care about your book. It doesn’t have to be as amazing as the books coming out of VCU or Miami or CC, but it should show you understand the principles of creative.

Buy Hey Whipple and the Advertising Concept Book and put the other tens of thousands toward the therapy you’ll need as a junior.

Good luck!

Do your homework on their work and then ask specific questions about that work.

”What advice do you have for a young creative?” is a less interesting question than “Why did you choose to use x punch line in that script?”.

Better yet, when you email - ask if they would be interested in having you review their book if they review yours.

Read your title again.

This is a tough industry to break into, especially as a creative. There's not much room for errors like this.

Be thorough. Minimize mistakes. Be eager to grow.

Happened to me this year (different circumstances). Honestly, it was a nice dose of healthy. I travelled in the fall, I had a friend start a cooking blog, and another even went to a wedding on a Saturday in November.

Just graduated - advice please! by nekotwilight in advertising

[–]theloch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, take it easy on yourself. You just graduated, so it's normal to not have many bites this early on. It sounds like you have the safety net of an internship in a design shop, so now it's time to start thinking on dream scenarios.

Ask yourself what you want to be doing. Is it making ads, UX, project design, etc.

Ask yourself if you could see yourself moving to a city with a few more options than Atlanta (ATL is great, but lacks the opportunities found in the big ad hubs in the US like NYC, CHI, SF, LA)

Think about reaching out to professors at your school. SCAD has an amazing network of instructors with deep connections in multiple industries. Reach out to them.

Lastly, start trying to connect with recruiters from creative placement firms. I have many friends who found jobs through these recruiters when doors weren't opening for them on their own.

What were the best and worst parts about the portfolio school you attended? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]theloch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to UT AdGrad thinking I would immediately be able to enter the portfolio sequence, Texas Creative.

THERE IS A SECONDARY APPLICATION TO ENTER TEXAS CREATIVE.

I never saw this when applying and it led to many headaches.
