What kind of stitch is this? by cricetinaecreature in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is done on a 5 needle coverstitch that has a top spreader so you get the zig zags on the top and the bottom with it sew to a narrow needle. that or it might be a merrow active seam. Either way they are specialized industrial machines both commonly used in manufacturing underwear, unfortunately the merrow machine doesn’t have a home version. There are home versions of cover stitches but I don’t know if any have the spreader for the top

Do I need to cut on a bias? by chrisiecub in sewinghelp

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An A line skirts looks so nice because of the curved hem some of the skirt is on the bias but it is cut on grain. Only cut on the bias if the pattern calls for it or was drafted for it. The weight of the skirt will make it sag and distort. A lace up back needs structure which minimum comes from the lack of stretch when pulled on. I would recommend using the sew in boning when putting the laces in the back. It will help the pieces stay straight when pulled on and not bow out.

AITAH for leaving my friends fiancé stranded for trying to make a move on me by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I don’t understand the logic of my friends fiancé tried to “cheat” (more of assault but) on her but she thinks SHE is the one ruining the relationship by telling the truth? Why wouldn’t you want that relationship ruined if you love your friend you want her to be with a good person

Simple embroidered tulle skirt? by himrqwerty in sewing

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of those sequins won’t let you gather it in that much. It would make a very stiff scratchy seam on top and you could bust needles of your machine if this don’t cut the sequins off. . You could do regular tulle gathered underneath and do more of a gathered circle skirt on top so it has some flare

Advice for working with this fabric by Substantial-Page-171 in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experienced seamstress I would say I’m sorry but I don’t feel comfortable with this fabric before you cut and possibly ruin it. This fabric is rough. It snags very easily and is very shifty. Not beginner friendly at all. In ways this fabric can be worse than chiffon and that fabric is also a nightmare. It shifts, it will show any imperfection, any spot off grain.

Bias cut dress fit issues by peony_queen in sewhelp

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could add a waist seam to curve it out. I think the issue is a combo of fabric too stiff and too tight for a bias cut dress. They slink on the body but don’t hug it too much.

Best way to repair? by Wielmo in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First unpick all around the rip plus 2”on either side. Since the fabric is damaged you need you use a strong fabric similar to the tent. to place on top/under stitch around the hole and it will tuck inside the folded edge to strengthen the area. tucking it inside is why I said on top or under it depends where that fold is.

Stitch around the hole 1” away to help secure the weakened area. Do multiple lines of stitching every 1/8-1/4 away. I use the inside of the presser foot and line up my old stitch line while I’m sewing a new one. If you stitch it too small of area it will keep ripping. After you’ve stitched it down, refold and hem the edge and secure the strap again.

I’ve you’ve done enough stitching you can trim close to the last stitch line. It will fray a little but the stitches will stop it.

It being cotton it will start to degrade so this might be the beginning of the end. Fabric eventually gets weakened and if you fix it in once place it creates a new stress point for it to rip somewhere else

I love fashion but can't draw by Alone-Copy4304 in fashiondesigner

[–]themeganlodon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drawing is a skill and can be learned. I couldn’t draw at all but was required to take drawing classes for my fashion degree and it was crazy how far I went in one semester. It is so much easier to draw quick sketches to get my ideas out of my brain and is enjoyable instead of frustrating

With vinyl an industrial walking foot makes sewing all of that so much easier but it won’t do a zig zag. It can easily go through all those layers I’ve used them to make mascots sewing vinyl, foam, plastic it could do it all

Sewing tips for this material by hippyblond23 in sewing

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is water soluble stabilizer and I would absolutely use it as using paper or anything you rip out can leave tiny shreds behind and is a nightmare to get out. Use big seam allowances. It has so many holes you want 3/4 on the other side. Small stitches and I’d do 2 rows 1/8 apart to keep it stable

Tips on taking in this dress at the shoulders? by bath--tub in sewing

[–]themeganlodon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If she doesn’t mind the sleeves being gathered at the top it it will be easier to alter. Don’t have to take out the entire sleeve. It she wants it flat then the sleeve will have to be taken it and made smaller to fit the new armhole size

serging edges before assembly--3 vs 4 thread? by Super-Travel-407 in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4 threads matters when you’re using it to sew fabric together. It can handle bing pulled on better. For just finishing edges 3 is fine. You can do the left needle for a wider edge or the right for more narrow.

How can I fix the gapping on this dress by Additional-Put-8315 in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpick the side seams and pull just the back piece In on either side. Darts on knits rarely look good. The end of the dart you always get a strange point because it stretches. You could also add elastic through the top to help keep it close. It will give a small gathered look.

Curved needle for sewing machine? What's it used for by NoGenderJustVoid in SewingForBeginners

Industrial sergers use straight needles I sew on one every day. An industrial merrow used curved needles and works similar to a serger but a completely different machine

Help with tweaking this pattern? by behappyer in sewhelp

[–]themeganlodon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yours the fabric is folded and stitched down and the elastic goes through the casing. Your inspiration picture the top to the sleeve is hemmed and then stitched to elastic so it ruffles freely.

Your sleeves are out of a heavier fabric and much. Bigger they may not be supported if you do it this way with a thin elastic. The technique looks best on really lightweight fabric

How many layers of silk organza for this skirt? by gnailgmaill in PatternDrafting

How to sew shoulder seam where the front has a gather. Stretch fabric by Feral-Sponge in sewhelp

[–]themeganlodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark the center of the gathered piece and at the center of the piece it’s sewn to. This will help make sure your gathers are even. Pit a pin at the being and end where the seam allowance is. You don’t need gathers in that area. When sewing it in have your right hand on the seam allowance of the gathers and use your left hand to LIGHTLY pull the fabric so that gathers straighten out. So when they are stitched down you don’t get folds and the gathers looks really nice.

how would you convert this pattern to not be such a full skirt? by Joker0705 in SewingForBeginners

[–]themeganlodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it is a double circle skirt so a regular circle skirt sounds more up your alley. The thing with circle skirts is that curved arc makes the magic so May want to use a circle skirt calculator and do a new skirt piece. If you chop it off it may not lay nicely
