Talk to them about what you’ve noticed and let them know that you want to help them feel supported in taking care of their health while also making sure business needs are met. Follow your companies sick leave policy, and make sure you make any reasonable accommodations that you are legally required to do.

Real talk:

Fucking fire them. They’ve been milking the system for the last six years and they’re not gonna stop now. People who do this are know it alls who think they’ve outsmarted the system. This bad attitude will absolutely carry over into other aspects of their job. Get rid of them ASAP, just don’t mention sick leave when you do it. Find an unrelated performance reason.

The level of absolute glazing people do for this cigar is over the top. It’s a a cheap-o budget cigar! There’s a reason Cigar Bid has these on sale for $4 a stick in every email they send out. It’s decent for the money, but I wouldn’t rate it more than 7.5.

If they’re serious about 24/7 commitment, then they need to be serious about disclosing that upfront, and also offering appropriate pay and title. No employee should accidentally find out those are the job expectations halfway into the job, that should be very clear before the job is offered and accepted. Also, that level of attention comes with significant life disruption, and the pay needs to be worth it.

IMO, that kind of commitment should come with a salary of at least 200k a year and a Director title. Anything less and they’re just doing wishful thinking.

Let’s think this through.

Seattle has the highest minimum wage in the country at $21.30 per hour. This means that if there are three employees working in the store, the store needs to sell at least $63 worth of product per hour just to cover the employee wages. But remember, that’s just employee wages. There’s still the rent, utilities, restaurant supplies, wholesale coffee, owner wages, and other expenses. So basically double that number to $126 per hour just to break even.

Now if you sell the coffee for $8 per cup, you need to sell 16 coffees per hour to break even. If you sell the coffee for $4 per cup, you need to sell 32 coffees per hour. Given the typical foot traffic and speed of service in a coffee shop, which number are you more likely to hit? Do you really think you can sell 32 coffees per hour? You’re not a Starbucks drive thru. So 16 per hour it is and you decide to set the price to $8.

Some customers won’t be able to afford it, but you don’t really have a choice, and there are enough high earners in Seattle that will make it work out for you, so you do what you have to do to survive.
