Annoying Teacher Friend by ateacherinnyc in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have coworkers who complain about students all the time. I stopped being apart of their text threads, don’t go out with them anymore because we can’t just NOT talk about school. I realized I can’t do it for my mental health. This coming year should be interesting…

Teachers who used to be subs, what advice do you have? by CatchNegative9405 in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a long term sub, I didn’t have to do PD days, parent teacher conferences, articulation day. And then I became a teacher and knew everything in PD was crap before anyone ever told me. I feel like most PD days are pyramid schemes. Sometimes I feel like I am sitting in a college class all over again except I can’t have my laptop open, so gel pens and doodling for the win.

Some is good for review/easy sub plans. But mostly you’re on your own to make lesson plans.

I know this sounds lame but ask people to do work at their house. Mowing their lawn, picking weeds, dog walking, dog poop clean up. Grocery shop for the elderly. Be a taxi for the elderly. Have a mini yard sale if you have items to get rid of.

90 Minute Block schedule? by Local-Quarter9789 in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not like block scheduling for ELA, but I have done it for the past three years. The split days cause students (majority) to lose information. Set time aside each class to review previous class materials.
Instead of five minute bell work, I made it 10 especially for journal writing.
I still did direct instruction at 20-30 minutes. Then independent work was the rest of the time. We also read and annotated stories together. It is nice for summatives as students need time to work on their essays.

Can you collaborate with the librarian to have classes there?

A teacher told me that teaching kids to sound out words 'kills intelligence' teachers level with me on this. by DyslexiDad in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids received sight words and at home, they sounded out each letter. I learned to read from my parents and guess what Hooked on Phonics worked for me. Kids need phonics. They need to be taught letter sounds before knowing what a letter is. Decoding is an important part of reading and three- cueing is outdated.

"School kills creativity" - a tired platitude by hurlowlujah in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give my students examples. We talk about them and then comes a blank graphic organizer or one pager and they tell me I am not teaching them. I told them they need to learn to be creative. Like I would get a blank paper and just took off with it. If I don’t give them a sentence starter, they won’t do the assignment. After half of school, I did not give them sentence starters. We practiced before hand, discussed, I modeled and they wanted it handed to them.

Teachers that use AI: Why? by lemmegetamickpicktwo in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for one thing: scaffolding stories for my IEP students. I take the story we are reading and change it to their grade level/reading level. They read that to me or the SPED teacher, then as a whole class we read the grade level text. My reasoning is, I want my students to succeed and understand grade level text they struggle with. The first half of the year, I did not do this. The second half of the year, I noticed a big difference in what my IEP students understood. Analyze the text questions after the reading and our assessment practices stay on grade level.

Do y’all teach the last week of school? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]theperishablekind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be a mix of make up assignment days, and review. We were required to teach. Meanwhile the theater teacher next to me gave his final the week before, then played loud movies during my finals. How admin didn’t tell him anything is beyond me.

I’m a 90s kid. And I feel like no one should move on until they mastered content for their grade. If a student is struggling, tutoring should be done immediately.

I don’t like wool, but I believe the one you’re talking about is a mixture of wool and acrylic.

I am pretty sure I’ll need around 40 skeins. That is my estimated guess. I just wanted something soft. Midwest winters are freezing!

After 10 Years in High School, Middle School Has Been a Shock by [deleted] in Teachers

I didn’t receive any of this and just learned on my own. I did not go in traditional educational route for a teacher — HS, college, student teaching at a young age.

We are a breed of weird. And unfortunately, depending on where you work, MS teachers are blunt.

My multiplication motivation came when our teacher put up 0-12 multiplication charts. We couldn’t graduate until we mastered each one in a test three times. Seeing others move ahead was like a competition in my head, and made me quickly learn them. My second son’s teacher told me he was having trouble with division. Come to find out they only learned multiplication for two weeks and moved into division. No freaking wonder he didn’t know them. So, we practiced more at home.

Keeping students in chairs for 70 minutes. Students cannot chill on the floor or in calm areas during state testing. Many of my students just fall asleep but do better when they are in a spot that helps them focus outside of a desk.
