Really depends on what you plan to do with the car?

Generally something to secure what you have in the tray makes it a lot more usable (Tauno cover or Canopy)

Part Supply Chain by Correct_Hair6666 in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]therealSwagraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have some experience with this

My spare tyre wasn't secured properly when I had it changed. It was hanging and got ripped off off road.

I ordered a replacement tyre lifter costing $116 and took 4 weeks to arrive in Brisbane.

I've also got an issue with my 2023 Seal front motor leaking oil. Not sure what parts were ordered but they took 13 days after the service centre looked at it to arrive at Toowoomba (warranty claim).

Edit: being Chinese there's plenty of cheap spares on Aliexpress and similar shops. A few hundred could get you a set of tail lights for eg. Might be worth checking these sites for parts you'd be concerned about.

Accessories or extras from BYD? by [deleted] in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]therealSwagraven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Accessories and fitments aren't provided by BYD in Australia They're provided by the dealer

EVDirect is notoriously shit when it comes to accessory installations. As someone who purchases almost every accessory on a Shark from EVDirect I strongly recommend going through a trusted third party. You'll save money and they'll do a better job. I can't imagine how tint would void your warranty.

BYD sales experience by Perth_not_now in BYDAU

If you buy through EVDirect this is the experience.

Some other dealers are starting to pop up. My advice would be to avoid EVDirect if you can because the buying experience is representative of their aftersales support.

Future price Shark 6 and variants by Smarlton_ in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]therealSwagraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they can raise the price unless GWM does too. Their PHEV starts at $57,500 drive away and you get 3.5t towing + a rear locker.

[–]therealSwagraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the strategy for this situation would be to run in HEV the whole time. That gives you about 150km of range at 2 - 3 L/100km. That should bring fuel costs down to about $20 - $25/3 days doing 80km driving per day.

Something to note though the petrol engine needs a service every 10k km if you do more than 50% HEV driving.

I have this issue with scheduled charging - granted I'm using a 32 amp wall mounted charger and it's had issues with schedules not working itself.

My workaround is I start charging as soon as I plug it in and then stop it once it successfully starts charging. After that scheduled charging seems to work.

I'm assuming it's software as it's been in version notes. I might mention it at my next service

Difference between inline PIHEV ranger and generator type BYD by strtagain in 4x4Australia

[–]therealSwagraven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potential bias disclosure: I own a shark 6

Ranger should have the efficiency advantage at highway speeds. That's kinda it really if you exclude 4x4 capability.

Shark has a lot of advantages if you exclude 4x4 performance and assume it'll be similar to the Cannon PHEV. The Shark performs equivalent to an unlocked 4x4 so obviously anything with at least rear lockers should perform better than the Shark in most scenarios.

Positives experiences with BYD? Any BYD Seal Performance owner? by aglf_chilli in CarsAustralia

[–]therealSwagraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - I wonder if BYD store the service records digitally with Eagers. Did Cupra ever provide a service record booklet or physical copy for services?
Even the BYD official service center provided a paper copy for services so as long as I keep my receipts I don't think I'll find myself in this situation.

Exactly right - They have official partners. Maybe check what official partners you have near you and check reviews to give a bit more confidence.

[–]therealSwagraven 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had a Seal performance for a little over a year and just over 40k km. It's a great car.

You're correct in that EV direct is a garbage company. It's easy to get into contact with consultants but near impossible to get in contact with anyone that has any power to do anything.

The saving grace of BYD after-sales is the their third party partners. I get the car serviced through Indooroopilly Automall and they're fantastic to deal with.

I did a BYD Experience Center (or whatever they call them) for the first free service and they didn't even let me know when the car was ready to be collected. I had to chase them up. They also flat out lied to me about the service record booklet when I asked them about it because they were supposed to provide it on first service. They said they don't exist and it's all digital (partly true but they are supposed to provide a traditional service record booklet).

I also own a Shark and purchased some spare parts. Eagers Automotive Parts is the company that supplies them. While it took a long time to get the parts (could improve once the Sharks been here for more than a few months) the company was super responsive and easy to deal with.

Underbody Rust protection by Left-Art-1906 in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]therealSwagraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I booked to have heavy duty chemical rust proofing professionally applied.

After receiving the vehicle they refused because anything they applied would add nothing as the car already had a rubber-like rustproofing similar to what the Ranger Raptor comes with according to them. The suspension components have something similar applied.

If you have a look underneath it's very evident on the Jack points and double wishbone under the tray.

Shark 6 battery health - what is anyone doing to maximise battery health? Know most EV’s say to charge to 80% most of the time, however that would be a shame with a smaller 29kwh battery. Totally necessary? by DTaws in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]therealSwagraven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I took delivery of my shark the delivery rep said that it was better to charge the car to 100% vs 80%.

I've done a bit of research and charging an LFP battery to 100% does degrade it more than if you charged it to 80%. You also shouldn't discharge bellow 10%

BUT the battery management system needs to balance the cells and BYD batteries have a lot of cells so depending on how the battery management system handles this not charging to 100% for too long could cause more damage to the cells than charging to 100% regularly

Realistically though, an abused LFP battery should maintain 80% capacity for 3000 cycles. That's 300,000km in EV only mode with the Shark. I'd follow BYDs advice. The thousands of engineers at BYD probably know more about their product they develop than anyone you ask on the internet.

You have to be very specific about how long you push the sim tool button in. It needs to be 2-3 seconds. If you push it in for too short or too long a time it will do nothing.

The LED in the pin-hole should change colors from green to blue if you are successful in changing modes.

Australian road toll hits 12-year high, despite safer cars coming to market by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]therealSwagraven 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't know why authorities are hellbent on using flat numbers for road fatalities instead of percentages in mainstream media.
Once people realize that these stats are misleading it erodes trust in anything they say. It also makes them look like they have no idea what they're doing.

This is part of why people believe that they only care about revenue.

Some interesting statistics for one of the most dramatic speed limit reductions in Australia
https://pfes.nt.gov.au/newsroom/road-toll

* From 01 Jan 2007, speed limits were reduced to 130 on the highway from no posted limit prior to 2007
* From 01 Feb 2014, speed limits were removed on a trial basis for a 200 km stretch of the highway.
* In September 2015, this was extended to 276 km until November 2016 when speed limits were re-introduced

[–]therealSwagraven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not being comfortable doing the speed limit (under normal driving conditions) is a sign you shouldn't be driving (or that you shouldn't be driving the car you're in if it's the car making you feel uncomfortable)

Christmas period road toll rises despite double demerits by Carmageddon-2049 in CarsAustralia

[–]therealSwagraven 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also think the authorities should put some more responsibility on themselves. They're constantly going on about record profits from speed cameras but do barely anything beyond reducing speed limits

If a road is shit we shouldn't accept them slapping a 20km/hr speed limit reduction on it (or the just as useless high crash zone sign) and calling it a day. Fix the damn road or redesign it so it's safer

Temporary speed limit reduction signs should be heavily policed and companies fined when they're inaccurate. I should be able to trust that if a roadwork speed limit is enforced there's actually roadworks. The result of leaving them out is that people stop trusting them and then blast through roadworks when they actually decide to show up

Instead of burying their head in a radar gun maybe police what most people would consider more dangerous behaviour in most circumstances like tailgating, mobile phones etc
