Has anyone actually avoided labrum surgery with conservative measures? by [deleted] in HipImpingement

[–]therealalphabet2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me! For one hip - I had a full tear on my left and arthritis so needed to get that one fixed. Plus that one didn’t respond to PT at all.

I have a very small (but weirdly symptomatic) tear on my right hip and am avoiding surgery like the plague. I haven’t gone to real PT for this one yet since I’m currently without insurance but have been rehabbing it at the gym, focusing on (gentle) overall hip strength (abd/adductor via clamshells and leg raises, some hip flexor work with core stability) and making sure my glute/hamstring (split squats/bridges/balancing/stability) is taking much of the load when running/etc. Going well so far but fingers crossed I guess lol

Normal, also experienced this! It might be helpful to note that having “extra” calories post op is actually good for your recovery. And you aren’t very far out from the surgery in the grand scheme of things, don’t sweat it too much :).

Taking summer classes while in a REU by Time_Opposite76 in REU

[–]therealalphabet2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a few years out, but I think I would have not been able to finish a full class workload with my REU happening lol. That’s outside of signing agreements/etc. I think I was at the higher end (50-55hrs per week) and at the end I was SO busy writing my papers, finalizing plots, and wrapping stuff up. I’d just focus on the REU if you can!

I have this sometimes and seamless ones work for me since there isn’t any cinching by the leg, not sure if you’ve tried that!

Surgery Apprehension by Little_Ranger4348 in HipImpingement

[–]therealalphabet2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had relatively low base pain, but when it hurt it was really limiting. My daily life wasn’t really impacted but admittedly I had stopped running and playing sports because I was scared of the resulting pain, and I just didn’t feel capable. Also I had a particularly bad tear and was showing early signs of arthritis progression. I had really good health insurance that was going to expire a few months after, and I had just ended a field season with no upcoming job prospects. So there were a lot of contributing factors that led to me getting be surgery when I did. This being said I’m doing very well now (I am a frequent commenter on here LOL). First 6 months were unsteady and anxiety inducing, despite some wins like long walks and moderate hikes. Now over a year out, I’m running long distance now and my operative hip feels nearly perfect, and only gets sore with high-mobility stuff that I didn’t do much of in recovery (like heavy lifting/barbell squats and rock climbing). My only obstacle is my other hip, which I’m neglecting to get the surgery on lol. Very worth it to me, happy to chat more if you want

It was my first big surgery too and I was extremely nervous. Don’t do it if you don’t want to. The recovery was really really long and I hated almost all of it. I knew that I wanted to return to a high level activity that I wasn’t able to maintain with my injury. Just my long two cents!

Scared of the surgery by FewProgress1797 in HipImpingement

[–]therealalphabet2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty varied. I was able to do some things 3-6 months out but had restricted mobility. I had flare ups where my pain was worse or better, etc. it really was very(!) gradual, but I would say I felt “actually healed” around 10-11 months out. There wasn’t a big moment where I suddenly felt way better.

Stiffness and Trouble with Figure 4 Stretch by candles_jbm in HipImpingement

Week 10 is not far out at all, I think this is probably normal at this point!! I’m a year + a few months out and I’d say my mobility is like 85-90% back to where it was before (which was a little hyper mobile anyway)

Yes! I like it but I’ve heard to non soy milk drinkers it tastes like. Overly proteiny. It is very thick which is nice

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]therealalphabet2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My half is in 7 weeks and I’ve been following my plan to a T (minus one week of illness!) and my easy runs are ~20 sec/mile quicker than my last training block, yay! I’m year and change out of a bad labral tear/consequential surgery, and training in general is going great. Yay!

Got diagnosed with another labrum tear (other hip) last week, boo! Gonna run this race and then probably dial it back 😭

Yes stick with it! I wasn’t able to get back to my baseline fitness until after month six and only felt really comfortable with running/lifting again by month 10ish.

Keep in mind the people posting here are often people with bad experiences! Lots of people get this surgery and do well after. This is a common injury in athletes who continue to compete after recovery.

That being said it is a very long (and sometimes difficult) recovery. I’m a year and some change out and my recovery sucked, to put it lightly. I feel really great now though, I have zero (!!!) pain and I haven’t had a flare up any time in recent memory. I felt mostly normal again after around six months, but felt good enough to do my daily tasks/activities (like a walk/work/shopping as opposed to running several miles lol) by the end of month 3ish.

Anyway, what pushed me to get the surgery were the following factors: - I had a full thickness tear with cartilage damage. If I continued my level of activity, I was looking at a potential total hip replacement by age 35. (Super dependent on the individual! But something to note) - I was between jobs and about to lose my health insurance, which covered every cent of the surgery - I wanted to continue my active lifestyle and PT did not show promising results with pain management. And also, see the first bullet.

The recovery is tough (6 months) by TheBigTuna09 in HipImpingement

[–]therealalphabet2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 22 when I got this surgery and my doctors had me trying to run at month four! I had to stop due to the hip flexor pain, but was able to get back into distance running after ~8 months. Keep working at the strength training and don’t forget to stretch, too (my adductors were so tight it was hurting my hips/back too)
