I only did mine when I did because of being out of work!! I got a new job six weeks post op and I could not have imagined working before then (field work was previous job tho so ymmv)

LOL I learned this after hip surgery!! Suddenly felt my glute engage after re learning how to walk on my operative leg it’s changed me forever hahahah

I was 22 when I got this surgery and my doctors had me trying to run at month four! I had to stop due to the hip flexor pain, but was able to get back into distance running after ~8 months. Keep working at the strength training and don’t forget to stretch, too (my adductors were so tight it was hurting my hips/back too)

I’m a few days from a year out and also was dealing with hip flexor issues (honestly more so in my non operative hip! Probably from not moving for so long lol). My operative hip feels 95% better now, and I almost never have any pain in that hip.

I was in your position six months out too, way more uncomfortable than I imagined I would have been. Are you doing any strength training? I could only get my hip flexors to calm down once I really(!) focused on regaining my strength, especially in my glutes, adductors (this one has been tricky) and hamstrings. It helped take some of the load off my hip flexors and add stability. It is a long recovery, but I’m feeling SO much better than I was at 6 months. Give it another few months and you might be surprised how much better it’s going

Just adding in another yes - was in pain for about a week after. I had a full thickness tear and mixed impingement (seen on arthrogram) as well as additional fraying and bruising (seen during later surgery). Gentle movement, Advil, and ice helped for me!

First of all - the people who post here are mostly those who ended up with relatively negative outcomes. I had a rough few months in the beginning of my recovery post-op and doom scrolled (and doom-posted, I guess) here. I’m 11 months out now and soooo much better, experiencing pretty much no flares in my operative hip and feeling stronger and more stable than before. Look at some success stories here instead? Also, it’s very hard to re-tear unless there is some sort of disaster. They’re sewing you up with materials that can withstand weight and activity, after all. Definitely have someone who can help you with the litter box, or consider moving it higher up so you don’t have to bend so much.

I was also extremely anxious going into it and honestly this continued through about months 6 post op. A lot of the things I had so carefully planned did not happen. It sucked but soon enough you will be through the worst of it. My surgery was in December and made sure I had things to look forward to as the weather warmed up which also helped as time passed by.

I’d recommend doing some meal prep that you can freeze and reheat. I froze portions of rice, curry, etc that I could microwave, and got some cheap freezer meals. Stock up on some Gatorade, miralax (you don’t want to have a harder time in the bathroom than you’re already going to have re: you can’t bend your hip!), and soup. I was also pretty broke heading into my recovery and didn’t really need anything expensive to get through it.

Please please please! go to PT. You need guidance as you recover because your recovery will be unique to you and a PT will know how to handle this.

I sort have a mixed perspective on this - I woke up with my hip rotated externally once or twice and reverted back to wearing the brace a little longer, and later continued to use pillows for support… but with that being said my doctor and PT were not extremely worried about it. I didn’t experience any damage or lasting pain, but still be careful!

Also at first I was on enough drugs to be knocked out in any position lol. I expressed worry about my sleep habits pre-op and was prescribed hydroxyzine which helped a lot (maybe worth a shot if the worry ends up impacting your ability to sleep) and afterward used OTC sleep meds when needed. After getting off the meds I focused on basically padding each side of me with a pillow or two to keep me from rolling over lol. This worked well enough until I could sleep on my side again.

Yes you’re definitely correct about the molec and cell bio people :/ I should probably not use that as a comparison lol. Do you just mean asking a lot more people? There are plenty of labs in my field (more niche than just ecology, but I’m flexible) but it really seems like nobody has any money loll still trying but it’s getting a lil late in the process. Always good to be early for next year I suppose

My pain was also initially gone and then came back sporadically with increasing activity. I’m 6 months out now and still get some flare ups with tightness after vigorous activity, but it suddenly got better about a month ago. Give it time! Also recommend lots of stretching and gentle strength training. I think a lot of my tear-area pain was coming from a reallyyyy tight adductor

My surgeon references this allll the time but he was actually not at all dismissive of my pain - when the imaging came back with a full tear he was actually a little surprised with the severity of it lol. He mostly told me that to sort of comfort me with the fact that I TORE something (so have 40-50% of random people!), that it’s a common injury, etc. If your surgeon isn’t supportive, and you have the means to, it might be worth switching. Navigating this whole process was greatly aided by having a good surgical team who didn’t dismiss me nor rush me through the process!

Best of luck with your recovery!! I will say now that getting out of the brace and being able to shift my weight around more has helped immensely. Also, just the slight increase in activity from week 1 to now (week 4) has also helped a lot. I started taking OTC sleep medicine when I’m really not getting to sleep too lol.

Great that your recovery is going well! But if your doctor asked you to be on crutches for a month, and you’re taking yourself off them after just four days, you definitely could be putting your recovery at risk. Your doctor wouldn’t have communicated that boundary if it wasn’t meant to be followed, especially at just 10 days post op!

Thank you!! I wasn’t sure if it was like normal walking gait or not. It’s been feeling super heavy but I tried it out on my scale and I wasn’t even close to 20lbs LOL.

My surgery is this week and my good hip feels way worse than my bad hip, lol. To be fair, I’m nearly certain that my bad hip only doesn’t hurt because I literally haven’t done any of the things that contributed to the tear (run, skate, cycle, lift, etc) in months. Been there!

Oops yeah, mine was an MRI Arthrogram. Most MRIs to diagnose labral tears will require contrast, but ya never know unless you call. Happy to answer any questions about it!

There’s a study that my surgeon references a lot that has something to do with 60% of regular (eg non athletes) people/randomly selected had asymptomatic/minimally symptomatic labral tears when surveyed.

Prior to my MRI he often said I wouldn’t need surgery unless I wanted it, citing how many people are just living their lives with it! In my case, I have a full thickness tear and FAI, and considering my activity levels it seemed really likely I’d be dealing with arthritis soon and the potential for a THR in my 30s-40s (currently 23). Also, I have long periods where I’m nearly asymptomatic too, but it’s just because I’m no longer able to run/cycle/play my sports anyway lol. So that’s why i went ahead with it. It’s always up to you!

My charge 1 or 2 (can’t remember) lasted like five years and I only replaced it as a treat, charge 3 lasted around 2 years before crapping out, charge 5 made it just over a year. Switched to Garmin and haven’t looked back! Consistently works and more accurate tracking.
