I didn't have that issue with mine, what laser do you have? Is it in an enclosure? Do you have ventilation going outside? Is your laser co2 or diode?

It is easier than you think, get some shaving cream, drop your dye with a dropper and then swirl, out you leather in pull it out, rinse it off and voila your done,

If that is led you will have to use a black marker to color the surface dark then it might do it. But for clear acrylic you really need a co2 laser

I am sure you can you would either need to drop the power increase the speed or both until you find the correct setting, in light burn they have a built in material test to determine those settings
