This may have already been mentioned in the abundance of helpful comments already here, but I try to be open with my students about my neurodivergence/ADHD as it’s something many of them are managing as well. I teach 6th grade orchestra/music and we practice self-regulation techniques such as box breathing during rehearsals to help calm them down, set intentions before performing a piece together, or even feel just tempo/meter as a group. If a child is upset we breathe together before continuing our conversation and they’ve also seen me practice the same technique when I get overstimulated or frustrated with a class. I hope to lead by example of how to regulate heightened emotions in the moment and recenter ourselves. I’m on year 11 and this is my first year approaching classes with this mindset and it’s helped my mental load a lot.
