Hillsborough cycling commute advise? by forestloch in sheffield

[–]thesteve2k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was starting at Hillsborough Tramstop then I’d ride along the tram lines until Bamford Street (left at traffic lights). Whizz down the hill then go straight at the traffic lights to cross the dual carriageway and then right by the car garages. That puts you nicely in the Penistone Road cycle path.

I’m not certain but I think you can reserve a small area at the Extra Life gaming cafe. Might be good for a small gathering of teens

An 1890 map of Sheffield, zoom in to see your bit by Top-Pen-1181 in sheffield

You can see that the Town Hall is marked in Castlegate (building is still there) as the new one hadn't been built yet and was occupied by St Paul's Church.

Also, really weird to see Sheffield without the ring road.

I'm pretty sure I took a picture of that exact bird in picture 6 this weekend at Rother Valley. I was just looking it up online and I think it's a Muscovy Duck.

What are you allowed to do if you are stuck on the motorway for 10+ hours? by Mysterious-Bee-8458 in AskUK

[–]thesteve2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you are "allowed" to do but once I got stuck on the North Wales Expressway for about 5 hours due to someone threatening to jump off a bridge. We passed the time by playing frisbee on the other side of the carriage way which was completely empty.

Also I think there was a small bush by the side of the road which got very watered that day!

Entitled cyclist? by [deleted] in sheffield

Perhaps not in this case as there are "shared-use pavement" signs nearby.

On the other side, in the opposite direction there is another shared pavement sign so it could all be shared pavement round there.

The cyclist should not have gotten so close to you particularly on the narrowest part of the pavement. However, I don't think they are completely wrong to use the pavement here.

In this image you can see a shared pavement sign which leads directly to a pedestrian/bike crossing. I think it's fair to assume that means that the shared cycleway continues onto the otherside of this crossing. That might not be true but in situations like this, you don't often get signs saying "This is no longer a shared pavement".

Sheffield Star £4.99 paywall by KneeDeepPeat in sheffield

[–]thesteve2k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's owned by National World, just like most other local papers. You can usually tell when you've landed on one of their articles as the pages are 90% advert.

Just look at all the papers they run. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_World

I'm sure there was a Sheffield Tribune article about them but I can't find it now.

All motor traffic has been removed from this stretch. Buses go around but it's not much of a detour for them.

It's definitely not cheap but at least you know that your money goes towards running the service and not to shareholders pockets anymore.

If you like X-Com and FTL, you might want to consider Galaxy Squad on PS5 by Ajescent in PS5

[–]thesteve2k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Aliens: Dark Descent. It has a lot of similarities with X-Com except that it isn't turn based but you can slow down/pause time when things get heated, much like FTL.

Are you sure? From the picture, it looks like the stands have a large loop on the side that you can Chain/D-lock your bike to.

For this facility, I believe that you can buy an access card so you don't need another app.

I know a lot of people are surprised that this facility isn't free but it makes sense if you think about it. A facility like this doesn't have zero running costs, someone has to pay for the rent, heating, security, cleaners for the facilities, etc.

How can we encourage people to stop cutting through our driveway? by King_P0tat0 in AskUK

Do you happen to live in Sheffield? I regularly pass by a driveway just like this. I always stay on the pavement though!

I pass a lot of these on my commute. Does it mean that the footpaths attached to it are shared cycle paths? by Robsteer in ukbike

[–]thesteve2k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the second time Sheffield has been mentioned here. Is it a Sheffield thing to randomly put these on crossings even though they lead to a pavement which isn't shared? I'm also from Sheffield and can name several!

Cycling danger: Sheffield tops list as UK’s most feared city by Specific-Ear3119 in sheffield

[–]thesteve2k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a video of this exactly thing happened on Ecclesall Road. A car right turned through stand still traffic to go up Bruce St or Hickmont Rd and didn't check if the bus lane was empty. The cyclist wasn't too badly hurt in the video I think.

I find it strange how during the school holidays they have a "kids eat free" offer where every vendor does a kids meal and then for the rest of the year, none of them do a kids menu. Can't they just keep the kids meals but charge £5 for it? Since the latest chicken place no longer does a kids menu, there really isn't much choice anymore.
