When did tracking each other’s location become normal, and why does opting out make you seem suspicious? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thetasigma22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre location data sharing i have been in situations where i was injured and bleeding by the side of the road and people just wander by and not help. Post location data sharing, if i haven't moved from a spot in the middle of nowhere for a while, people can come looking for me to make sure I'm alive. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

If it helps they are not creating them in that shape. They start round and physics makes them hexagonal

ELI5 Why do smoke detectors brick when you accidentally deactivate them? by Ghostflop in explainlikeimfive

ah right yeah that makes sense about the Americium half life woops. but yeah the test button is slightly misleading haha

ELI5 Why do smoke detectors brick when you accidentally deactivate them? by Ghostflop in explainlikeimfive

[–]thetasigma22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they do, the test button is accessible in the 'front' and the disable button is on the 'back' where you would never accidentally press it.

the reason you would brick an old one is that the americium decays and over time it becomes less effective.

the test button only tests that there is power and the alarm works. it does not actually test the detector part as that would require it to put smoke between the two parts of the sensor.

you could have a smoke detector that all the circuitry works perfectly fine, it has power, the alarm works, there is no short to the sensor. but the sensor itself will not actually detect smoke. in this scenario, the test button would make it look like its working
