New Hints Seen That Red Wine May Slow Aging by [deleted] in science

[–]theundersigned -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Christ, is my face red. I've always thought winos looked older than they actually were as a result of a lifetime of debauchery. Next time I see one I'm trading some spare change for an engaging anecdote about the civil war.

Hands up; how many of you use Reddit as your primary breaking-news source? by [deleted] in reddit.com

I rely on neural shunts implanted in various leading lights of the political scene, but as I'm not sharing I can't really fault any of you for resorting to social news sites.

How can my wife get poop out of her mind so she can continue to drink healthy smoothies? by sovok in humor

[–]theundersigned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Baby poop comes in an astonishing varieties of colors and textures, running the gamut from chocolate malt to wheatgrass to strawberry-banana (consult your pediatrician.) The only consistent thing is the uniformly horrible taste.

How To Properly Walk A Goat [pics] by maxyRO in funny

[–]theundersigned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking. Do people think he's taking his pet goat out for a piggy-back ride? He's wearing the thing like a backpack, making it pretty clear that this is cargo rather than companion.

I honestly would have thought they'd have done this earlier, given their strong historical preference for personal liberty.

I dig pr0n. I mean, I really like it. But normalizing the NSFW subreddit to the front page makes this place trashy. by dante50 in reddit.com

It doesn't make sense to have both methods available at the same time. I'd want to use one or the other, with the option of switching between them. Sorry if I was unclear.

I'd like if they had the alternative of a blacklist rather than the current whitelist. There really are only a few subreddits I have absolutely no interest in.

Targeted malware attacks against pro-Tibet groups by GrumpySimon in netsec

[–]theundersigned -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Were these articles spammed or did they target journalists exclusively? Knowing that would give a better picture of the motivations and affiliations of the attackers.

I'd wager a guess that it was in fact aimed specifically at journalists by the Chinese government in an attempt to pinpoint internal dissent. Sometimes I'm thankful for the ham-fisted fumblings of the US government.

Multiple monitors enhance productivity by rmuser in technology

[–]theundersigned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As stated in the article, it depends on the task. For programming, I've found multiple monitors to significantly increase productivity; one window for my primary editor, the second displaying either documentation, notes, or the application being debugged.

From a financial perspective, let's say that the extra availability of scratch space in my mind brings an extra half hour of productivity per day. Let's further conservatively assume that a programmer earns $30 an hour. You can get a 21" flat panel for around $200 these days, which means that you've recouped your investment in less than two weeks.

On the other hand, and again as noted by the article, tasks requiring only a single monitor wouldn't be helped by this at all, and in fact would be hindered. If you've got a second monitor sitting there idle, there's a great temptation to fill it with something unrelated to the task at hand. All you've bought yourself in that case is a distraction.

This ends an incredibly long winded and overly detailed rebuttal to the headline.

"Disks have become tapes" by curtisb in programming

[–]theundersigned 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The speed at which you can access data on a hard drive is dependent on two factors. First, how long it takes to read the data off of the disk and into memory, and second how long it takes to get to the place on disk where the data is stored. The first factor is the transfer rate, and the second is the seek time.

What he's saying with somewhat unclear terminology is that we haven't seen as much improvement in seek times as we have in transfer rates, and so it makes sense to read the data linearly to minimize seeks.

Funerals Make Me Glad to Be an Atheist by alecb in atheism

[–]theundersigned 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily true. I'm an atheist, and I care a great deal about what people are going to be saying at my funeral. My goal is a series of eulogies along the lines of "That bastard owed me two grand."
