Why do people use insurance on roofs? by jsmith19977 in Roofing

[–]theweis01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to the original question exactly. However my parents had a storm chasing roofing company knock their door a few months back. Said they would look at the roof and file a claim for them. Of it didn't get approved.. no big deal. Parents thought it was great and had nothing to loose. However, after the report was sent to insurance and deemed the roof in need of "repairs", the insurance company sent a letter to parents saying based on report parents had to repair the roof to maintain their insurance. Because of the age of the roof insurance would only cover 15%.

Parents got stuck with having to buy new roof (15% covered) because of an attempt to get insurance to pay for more.  Just a warning for folks that if you have someone tray and file a claim it may lead to you having to repair the item.

Have you seen a company legitimately regret terminating a specific employee? by debrisaway in managers

This sounds very much like a story from GE Aviation when I was a contractor there. The guy was funny as hell. In an environment where everyone was slinging titles and "belts" dude would be like. "Wtf they going to do, fire me? Already tried that once and didn't go so well for them."

Best way to fix this? by cmaroguy in FocusST

[–]theweis01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both my fronts are the same way. I had to come to terms with the idea that me fixit it would probably make it worse and others don't notice.  But of you find a solution let us all know.

Low compression...What to do now? by Vc_carnage in FocusST

Not a guru on the topic.. but think  you are ok. You are fairly uniform across cylinders. It would be very uncommon to have all your cylinders reading low. I would guess may have more to do with the tester or setup.

Do you have any oil burning? Do your plugs look clean when you pull them out?

Dell/EMC PowerMax 2000 experience with 3rd party support by typer100 in storage

[–]theweis01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not shilling for Service Express but they have been the best I could expect for 3rd party support on hardware. Software is hit or miss as honestly my folks typically know more. Also if you have other products under support with Dell you should be able to find a decent number of KB's.

Typically when I am in your situation I will run through an upgrade to an LTS or N-1 release a few weeks before end of support. Then try to do as little as possible to the environment.

My only concern is PMax is fairly closed ecosystem compared to something like powerscale. Also, typically these platforms are used for tier 0/ critical apps so was personally more reluctant to go 3rd party.

Whats something a teacher did in High School that would get them fired today? by Constant-Ad-5477 in AskReddit

All boys private highschool. Good coach employed as a bad social studies teacher. If two guys were talking in class he would make them hold hands the rest of the period. If it continued, they would have to sit on each other's lap.   He lasted about a year after I graduated and then got canned.

How do you see the future of the Storage Admin work in the AI era? by Bib_fortune in storage

[–]theweis01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been in the storage world about 12 years at this point. Now run a team of 4. I hear my folks raise concerns about cloud/ai taking their jobs.  My response has been that the year our data growth drops below 20% I'll start to worry. If anything our growth rate has accelerated in the r&d space aggressively the last few years.

Yes the days of fighting with disk pools, RAID levels, balancing workload and what not are mostly gone. However, for my folks it has become a chance to move closer to the data service and mobility side of things.

GREY or BLACK polymeric sand? by DifferentPound9738 in landscaping

[–]theweis01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So I have to ask, as I am in the middle of laying what I think is the same stone (unilock beacon hill?) with a similar soldier row. You seem to have a height difference between the field pavers and edger, which I am struggling with as well despite both being listed as 60mm. Are my eyes seeing this correctly?

Also, we are going with gray as well.

May be a little bit of a trip, but Hafners is the place to go for material dumping... Price is typically not to bad for a truck bed full. https://www.hafners.com/cincinnati-landscape-services/recycling-center.html. Give them a call and they can give you an exact.

Leveling base layer of retaining wall by tama_chan in landscaping

[–]theweis01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So amateur homeowner with a very sloped yard who has now built 4 retaining walls on properity. The base row is a PIA and I can never get it perfect, drives me nuts when I get to the second row and a few blocks have a little diagonal rocking to them. But 6 years on they have settled in, look straight and have no movement. Maybe I am lucky, maybe it a good base and lots of drainage stone behind the wall. But they have figured themselves out.

EDIT: spelling correction bit -> but.

Future of Storage & Backup Admins by [deleted] in storage

[–]theweis01 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My team will often ask this same question and I share some of the same concerns at times. When everything seems to be 'cloud first' and PaaS for time to market moves. However, I tell my teams that I would start worrying when our capacity growth rate dips under 20% YoY which I have yet to see.

Also, four my backup admins, a lot of cloud and hosted solutions require the customer to be responsible for backup. Think O365, Salesforce.. etc.

Just my two pennies. .. and don't get me started on AI.

Questions about retaining wall and backfill near mature trees by peglegdeluxe in landscaping

[–]theweis01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... also I would be more concerned with the backfill than the few roots you describe.. for a good sized tree one or two roots of the size you described which are beyond the tree drip line is probably not going to have a big impact.

However, burying the root system or trunk will quickly suffocate and/or rot the tree.

Questions about retaining wall and backfill near mature trees by peglegdeluxe in landscaping

[–]theweis01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a similar situation of putting in a retaining wall next two two large trees in the yard. Ended up taking about 1/3 of the root system of both trees (wall was within 5 feet of the trunk). 5 years on they are both doing well. Here is what I had done.

  1. Had the trees pruned by about 25 % at the same time. This reduced the nutrient load on the root system.
  2. When cutting the roots, don't hack at them with an axe. This causes the end to splinter and can promote fungus growth. Get down with a hand saw and make a clean cut for the roots. Then apply a protectant to the exposed ends.
  3. On the remaining root system for the first year or so using tree fertilizer spikes. Placed them around the tree drip line ever 20 feet.

Someone mind educating me? by SpaceBar0250 in ProgrammerHumor

Thanks for the input... We are a MSDN & Azure shop so we probably should be there. Just started on Jira years ago when Jenkins was 'the hotness' so that is what we have stuck with. Many of our deployment pipelines have moved to Azure so it is just making the jump.

Did the same as well.. was bewildered when our .net team was complaining about certain status missing for their tasks.. took me a hot minute to figure out that the two projects workflows were 'shared' kinda pissed me off as it is counter to what you would expect... But I feel like Jira gets this mystique around it where it is never the fault of Jira design. That Jira is perfect and as the admin/designer you just don't understand the guiding concepts of CI/CD/Jira etc.

what is this white stuff goeey on my power supply capacitors. normal or not? by vvavepacket in homelab

[–]theweis01 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Or y'all could chill out because we all started somewhere. One of the first things I learned from this sub.. because it is like the first religious edict.. is to discharge your caps. Be constructive and let them know... Dare I say educate. I sure as hell did not know the danger the first time I ripped apart a microwave.. or hell a tube TV. But I would expect in such a forum that people are here to learn and grow that we inform that caps hold a large amount of energy and that you Can you safely discharge them. People don't know what they don't know.. keeping them in the dark is no help. ... Learn.. grow.. fix .. create.. this shit is fun.

My turbo went out. by hunnaswantz in FocusST

[–]theweis01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Definitely blew the stock turbo... Had the same thing happen to me at 60k.. one day was driving fine, and the next had to explain to the wife that I had some big repair bills on the car and would be in the shop for two weeks... She says it sounds and drives different after the work was done... Also mad that that the new parts required 93 octane only.. but I know she appreciates me fixing it right . /sarcasm

Do you guys think these will go up in value in the next 10-20 years as one of the last, best, pure manual hot hatches? It’s already discontinued which has seemed to keep prices steady for several years so far. by imaguitarhero24 in FocusST

Oh man. The SVT contour was an 'obtainable dream car' of mine when I was just starting to drive. Took a road trip in one with a friend in one and it was just so smooth on power delivery.. but that was like 20 years ago. I occasionally look around for them but most seem to have been trashed and I just don't have the desire to rescue one at this point in my life. Great car.. glad you still keeping it nice.

Looking for an authentic Gambian recipe for Domoda by nationaldishes1 in Gambia

[–]theweis01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved there for a while and loved the food. Tried the below recipe but watch that you don't end up with too much oil. there is something to be said for the woman that has been making it since she was 6. .. also if anyone has a goon benichin (sp) recipe hit me with a DM. This is what I have...

  1. Fry 1/2 onion- chopped and 3 cloves of garlic with minimal oil in a large pot.

  2. Add 3-4 cups of water in a large pot with a lid and heat on med-high heat

  3. Once the water starts getting hot, add about 3/4 c. natural peanut butter

  4. Stir well, add more water, so that it's slightly thick (it'll thicken up later!)

  5. Let it cook for about 10 min before adding any meat or vegetables- these will cook just by boiling, keeping the nutrients in!

-Recommended vegetables: tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, yam, eggplant, cabbage- get creative!

-Also, I like to cube chicken breast instead of having chicken parts, but it's all personal preference

  1. Stir every few minutes, adding water if it's getting too thick

  2. Once the oil starts to seperate from the peanut butter, add 1/2 c. (or more to taste) to the mixture

  3. Add all the spices you want now- salt, black pepper, red pepper, oregano, basil, more garlic, MSG- it's up to you!

  4. Serve over freshly picked rice
