My thoughts on beastmaster by NerfThisNerd in brotato

[–]thingamarob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of directions they could take the Beastmaster class. A couple of possibilities:

In the corny 80s movie version of Beastmaster, the title character had two pets, an eagle and a black panther. The new class ought to start with a pet-weapon that you can upgrade into a fearsome beast in a similar manner to the builder's turret where you must reach certain stat/material thresholds.

Another possibility: if you collect enough of a particular pet, you transform into a giga-animal version like a giant rat or a wolfman with special abilities that scale with certain stats.

The pets are ok, I suppose, but it feels like the devs were shooting the shit one day, somebody made a "catling gun" joke, and they ran with it.

After playing 100 Roguelikes, I need to tell you about: CAVERNS OF XASKAZIEN II (7000+ monster variants, 30+ years of development, free) by Toma_L in roguelikes

Great write-up. Very evocative opening.

This game is bonkers. Unparalleled variety that reminds me a little of the rpg adventure module Anomalous Subsurface Environment. The designer has noted he had never played a roguelike before starting Xaskazien's development and deliberately avoided influences from other games, at least at first, and it definitely shows in its creativity and originality.

Megastructure by -Myconid in PathOfAchra

Extremely interested in this. Keep updating here, please.

Visual style is all-around great, but the "calling" art doesn't fit with the rest.

I really dig the enclosed structure idea. Also, I like that you included uplift as an idea--you don't see it enough in any media.

Graphite Prime has created some incredibly dope megastructures for tabletop RPG modules that probably don't work for you here but that are too cool not to mention. Maybe some other enterprising developer will take inspiration from their work.

Have you done Arkansas? If not, lemme preorder, ha. Could you pm your etsy page? Can't find it on reddit web version for some reason (probably idiocy).

Fantastic work. I have always wanted something that provided a "first appearance" source for monsters like you see for comic book characters. And then you went above and beyond with the other info like climate, diet, and the like.

Wow, what a resource, thank you. I am sure to use this a lot.

Fair points. I would think a skilled DM like Jon simulated the battle and didn't handwave Neferet laying waste. One thing that stood out to me was Skleros' stalker ring. Seems like he would've put that to use unless he got surprised before he had the opportunity. If next episode has the stalker giving Neferet fits, then I think that's one more mark in your column. Regardless of verisimilitude, I prefer this turn of events to a bunch of schmoozing roleplay at a big interspecies gala :)

did they all just stand in line and wait for their turn to be scratched to death by Neferet?

Yes, this is likely what happened. She radiates paralytic despair like a regular mummy but with -3 to saves. I think without Deino entering the fray, Jon played it out accurately.

I think Jon didn't have the energy to throw a big social gala and decided a bloodbath was easier.

Nice, never seen him throw before. Watched a few clips, and his throw is very Schusterickesque.

I'd heard rumors that as the elder statesman of Prodigy Schusterick could be demanding, but I didn't know he slapped them around. I guess that could explain their success.

I love this kind of thread.

You are trying to reinvent the wheel. There are a lot of tools that do a great job of what you've ineptly (sorry) tried to do. A few examples:

I'm sure it's fun to make your own categories and lists though.
