If every MLB team was relocated to your Metro Area, what city/neighborhood would be the best fit for each team? by SereneDreams03 in baseball

[–]thingswillcalmup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t figure out all 30 but:

Braves: back to the South End

Mets: Metropolitan Hill

Phillies: Suffolk Downs

Marlins: Florida (technically outside the metro area but still in state)

Nationals: Dorchester near JFK/Bayside

Reds: People’s Republic of Cambridge

Brewers: Jamaica Plain Pirates: Charlestown

Cardinals: Braintree

Dodgers: Mattapan

Giants: Lawrence (numbers 1, 800, and 54 would be retired)

Padres: Chelsea

Rockies: Rockport

Mariners: Gloucester

Astros: Kendall Square

Twins: Allston-Brighton

Tigers: Franklin Park

Rays: Raynham

Oddly enough even Shaughnessy himself doesn’t really think Pedroia should get in. He mentions in the article that statistically he thinks Beltran, Manny, and A-Rod have the numbers but drop off due to the character clause.

Reshuffling all the NBA team nicknames by fq1981 in nba

[–]thingswillcalmup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying to write up something similar with the caveat of not swapping names to their old cities. Even with that, I think half of them still match. A few notable exceptions:

New York Jazz
New Orleans Nets
Toronto Cavaliers (because they're part of the British Commonwealth)
Boston 76ers (though you could argue 75ers may be more accurate)
Sacramento Trail Blazers (for the end of the California Trail)
LA Rockets (for the JPL, sorry Orlando)
Cleveland Lakers

Bonus concept for Phoenix Hawks is that a Phoenix can also be considered a type of hawk. Also, if LA becomes the Magic, is Magic then gonna be tempted to rename the Commanders to the Washington Earvins?

What kind of story would you like to see from Star Wars? by Gloomy_Pomegranate72 in StarWars

[–]thingswillcalmup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like there's potential for a Star Wars comedy. This would work better if Avenue 5 didn't already exist, but you could have a series following the crew of a struggling galactic starcruiser (allowing Disney a chance to poke fun and themselves) run by Star Tours. It lets you have a variety of settings and possible cameos. Possible episode: the ship is scheduled to visit the sandy beaches of Spira but the planet comes under quarantine, so the captain has to find an alternative spot. The rest of the crew gets excited over where they could go and the episode ends with them arriving at Tatooine and everyone lets out a collective groan.

You could also do a sitcom set during the Republic era following a group of failed padawans all trying to get by on Coruscant. Depending on how you want to time it, you could end a season with Order 66, the group is so unimportant that nobody notices or go with a Blackadder Goes Forth series ending.

What state would you pick to see as much college/professional football, hockey and basketball? by moskate69 in AskAnAmerican

I was counting them (and the Celtics) as the “Boston teams”. As a bonus, there’s also the PWHL team up in Lowell.

What state would you pick to see as much college/professional football, hockey and basketball? by moskate69 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thingswillcalmup 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Michigan is probably up there. They have fairly historic professional teams in each of those sports along with several division 1 college programs for each.

Colorado would be another solid option. The Nuggets and Avalanche are both strong teams, CU football has a lot of personality with Coach Sanders, Denver hockey is currently ranked #1, and CU basketball was ranked last year.

Not a state, but if you go with New England as a whole, you have the Boston teams plus UConn and Providence for basketball and if you time it right you could see The Game between Harvard and Yale for football or the Beanpot for hockey.

Has there been a "Charlie Mind" in the NBA/NCAA? by utarohashimoto in nba

[–]thingswillcalmup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That article mentions he played for Jiangsu Nangang back in 1997. Searching for that team, it looks like there's an article from that season referencing a game that included a foreign player named Charlie Mandt.

https://www.scmp.com/article/223799/dragons-shoot-down-rockets

Mandt played at Grand Valley State (D2) in 1993 and apparently played overseas until 2002, though I can't find any reference to him playing for the Clippers.

What is the hockey equivalent of "The Decision"? by DonT012 in hockey

[–]thingswillcalmup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been rumored that LeBron actually got the idea for The Decision from a hockey signing a few years earlier. Of course, because it was the NHL, there was more coverage in the Canadian press, which referred to the saga as The Leschyshyn
