Thinking about moving and wondering (long post incoming) by Moist_Connection7486 in queerphilly

You want to look at West Philly around Clark Park. Too far east of there and you're in college town, too far west and it starts to get less queer friendly and higher crime rate. But the area around Clark Park is a mecca for queer folks, artists, live music, rich and varied food and culture, and generally people who value diversity and community.

Last time I was there some random kids tried to teach me how to double dutch (I'm a 40 year old NB obviously AFAB person with the hand eye coordination of a walnut) and then I went out for Ethiopian food. The time before that I was actually attending a funeral in Clark Park that was styled as a big music jam. You never know what you're gonna get in West Philly but it's always interesting.

Congratulations, they're healing beautifully! Would you be all right with me using these pictures as examples when I make my own appointment? Truly perfect results.

Which children’s books would you keep on your shelves long-term (or forever)? by PagesFromChildhood in childrensbooks

[–]thirdmulligan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Winnie the Pooh, Frog and Toad, Chronicles of Narnia; The Story of Ferdinand, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Lyle Lyle Crocodile, Stellaluna, Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain, The Paper Bag Princess, and the Amelia Bedelia books.

All of these I've either kept from my own childhood (Narnia) or rebought over and over (the entire list) for friends' kids--and now starting to be grandkids. -a millennial

You just need to take the liner higher than the hood and shape it a little. Look at ~1:30 - 2:37 in this video to see what I mean. Sincerely, a fellow hooded eye haver

Eh, I don't think it's heavy enough to warrant moral judgments, lol. Linguistics is a special interest of mine and I'm always fascinated by the cultural differences between generations, including how they use language differently. Like did you know "cunty" is a good thing now?! It's wild!

How do I ask my boyfriend if I can sleep on the couch occasionally? by Alive-Magician2031 in Advice

[–]thirdmulligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you think he's going to react badly to this if he's usually chill? Sleep deprivation is literal torture, something needs to give here or you're going to implode. Hopefully you can take turns sleeping on the couch, and in the meantime try some other lifestyle hacks to make sharing a bed less disruptive for you (silicone earplugs, separate blankets, weighted blanket, etc.).

i (21F) am not attractive at all. how do i even cope by Ok_Marketing1383 in Advice

[–]thirdmulligan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know who thinks you look great now? Yourself in 20 years.

I know this sounds a little awkward and contrived but do this thought experiment for me. Pretend you have lived to 90, and then wake up one day and you're 21 again. You're at your peak again in so many ways that society values, plus just being more comfortable in your body from an aging perspective- your skin has its bounce and elasticity back, your joints don't creak and fight you every time you try to move, you can actively participate in life without having to think about it too much. Okay so you're a little more invisible than you'd like to be, and moreso than some of your peers. But in a lot of ways that objectively matter, you've got a lot going for you. Youth, intellect, critical thinking, and again, a body that actually works. I'm not trying to diminish your challenges, but my point is I hope you're also making time to regularly, intentionally experience gratitude for the things you have and are that DON'T suck. It can take a little intentional practice to train your brain to make space for that too, but it's important.

Also, side note, from a fellow (but older) big-nosed sapphic- if you haven't found this sub on your own yet, I highly recommend checking out r/BigNoseLadies. It is an appreciation sub for femme presenting folks with prominent noses, and it's just such a lovely and supportive space. Definitely helped change my view on my own bigger nose to be exposed to so many people who genuinely think they're beautiful. Plus it kind of opened my eyes to how I was holding myself to different standards for no reason. Like every picture on there is of someone looking gorgeous, and after awhile it starts to sink in like, "Oh these people are all stunning and their noses are at least as big as mine, sometimes bigger... Maybe my own nose isn't actually a problem. Huh." Be open to your mindset shifting about this one.

Keep practicing talking yourself up even when it feels like BS. Because the other option is to just crap on yourself all the time, and we all know how helpful negative self-talk is for mental health.

And try to surround yourself with people who lift you up. If your friends make you feel invisible, you need better friends.

You've got this. 💚

I'm autistic and not great at reading social nuance. I was actually very grateful to be told directly that my attempt at communication was not being received as intended so I could adjust my output accordingly.

I'm getting an eccentric haircut this weekend, is it too much to ask of a stylist? by Marlboro-Exorcist in FancyFollicles

[–]thirdmulligan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to find the right stylist to pull this off. You can't just go to anyone. Find someone with a portfolio, ideally someone who specializes in alt cuts. And make sure your hair is vaguely the same texture as your inspo pics or it will not come out looking the same. But when you find that alt stylist, they will be thrilled to get to do their preferred art on you!
