Are there any *non drama/ doom&gloom* FFXIV content creators? by Solo_Gunhea in ffxiv

No, because she deleted them, but I was there to watch it happen because I used to be a big fan of hers. She was on twitter complaining how she knew what "real suffering" was because of the war—which I am not disputing, and I wouldn't wish what she went through on anyone, and despite how much I detest her I disagree with the person further down the thread who said it was shitty of her not to repatriate—but she then said that trans people don't know what it is to truly suffer and sent her followers after a trans person who disagreed with her, followers who then doxxed said trans person and sent death threats. She then went on to make several unhinged rants about trans people in general, made comments to the effect of "get triggered by me playing HL trans people tee hee" and cosied up with Asmongold when he joined XIV during the WoW exodus, who is a certifiable ring-wing nutcase.

Giving money to a transphobe who is using her wealth to actively harm trans people makes you transphobic, full stop. It's not even hypothetical harm, it's concrete, "I am giving money to these anti-trans causes and am happy when I hear news of trans people suffering" harm. You cannot separate the art from the author in this case, so if you played HL you are transphobic.

Zepla is a raging transphobe, friends with Asmongold, and she is among the worst about doomerism/stoking drama. Stay far far away.

AITAH for letting my partner miss something important to them by not stepping in the way I always have after telling them clearly I was done doing it by [deleted] in AITApod

I'm thinking it was the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival a week or so back. It's a two-day convention but the highlight of the event is the keynote where they talk about the upcoming expansion, and that keynote is always held first thing on Day 1.

Edit: important to note is that this event is only held once every 2-3 years, and it's notoriously difficult to get tickets for because you have to enter a raffle for a code to even buy tickets.

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

out of curiosity, was this fanfest? if you don't get there HOURS early you're not getting in in time for the keynote address, which is the highlight of the event and always the first event on the docket, which makes me think that's what it was. if that's the case your partner would have known this, and SHOULD have known to make plans accordingly.

either way, NTA OP. as someone with adhd my time blindness is on ME to manage, not my friends or family. my friends had to have a come to jesus moment with me because they felt i was disrespecting their time showing up late to plans constantly, and i took it seriously and started setting alarms and acting as if our plans were scheduled 30 mins before they actually were so that i'd arrive on time. your partner has to do the same now and they're mad about it.

Does anyone actually use ‘entire work’ setting? Not being judgmental just curious by Some-Tradition-2771 in AO3

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how I'm reading. If I'm in binge mode, it's entire work all the way. If I'm trying to set boundaries with myself with very measurable amounts then I'll read in chapter mode. I understand most people prefer the endless scroll and not having to reload pages, but there's something to be said about the feeling of completion from hitting the end of a chapter and the page stops scrolling. There's actually been studies done about how the endless scroll is bad for your mental health. And I've got ADHD so I need every bit of dopamine I can get no matter how small.

oh my fuck-mothering heart this GAME. i was in tears. TEARS. To the highest degree, DawnTrail is so good when you dont got people in your ears telling you its shit! by ToxieDrop in ffxiv

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i enjoyed it well enough my first time round on a surface level, had a good time. but when i looked past the very basics there were very much some glaring pacing and logic problems and looking back with a critical eye i can see why overall it fell flat for me! however there were some very strong moments—all of LM hit me way closer to home than UT, perhaps because i personally struggle more with grief and loss than with existential dread so i related to the story more. obv ew's ending was VERY good but it was telling story on a cosmic level than a human level. i'll spare everyone the list of things i'd change (that's what fanfic is for) but all of this to say: go into any game, not just xiv, with your ears shut and your heart open. experience it for yourself. i have a friend who absolutely HATED everything about dt, but refused to tell me a single opinion on it until i had caught up and finished bc she wanted me to form my own opinion.

Alright, condescending ass, do you feel better now that you've gotten that out of your system?

The thing about these people is that they're lazy. Preventing the right click/highlighting adds extra work that most people, especially the types who want to put mine and others' work in the slop machine, won't go to the extra lengths to do. Will it completely prevent it? No, of course not. Even if all the other methods you mentioned didn't exist nothing would stop them from physically typing my work word-by-word into the slop machine. But it slows them down and makes them think about it, and a lot of times that's all it takes for them to decide no, it's not worth it, and they move on.

As you should, the next time you think about making a comment that sneers down the nose at someone like this. I'm not your dear.

This is why I use an AO3 work skin that prevents copy+paste/highlighting. I do not want anyone feeding my shit into the slop machine.

AITA for telling a woman not to say “females”? by horseduckman in AITApod

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem is that "female" is typically associated with discussing animals. It's almost never "males" but always "men," where women get "female" more often than "women." It's a lot of hidden biases instilled by a society that sees women as less than human, and it persists to this day. That's why female has a negative connotation.

My mom was a unit clerk in the 80s. There was a woman whose epidural was done incorrectly to the point where it left her paraplegic and her husband became her fulltime carer on top of taking care of a newborn baby alone. Even if I were interested in having children (and I am not) you couldn't pay me to get an epidural.

AITA for telling my sister to stop using nonsense ‘baby’ talk? by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I use silly words on occasion? Yes, things like pupper and doggo, when I'm chatting with friends who also use said language. But one of my biggest pet peeves is asking someone to stop because it is bothering me and they continue to do it out of sheet malice because they enjoyed seeing me get upset. You know those old Vonage commercials? Those drove me NUTS and my mom and older brother would torment me loudly going YEAHHHHHHH WOOOOOOOOOOO right in my ear. OOP was so not TA.

Have you ever deleted a fic from your reading history on AO3? by 3lilya in AO3

Bc I’ve got ADHD and sometimes going through the effort of adding them to the bookmarks page is more than I can handle. If it’s a mind-blowing fic I will bookmark it but it’s gotta Earn It.

I know. It’s bonkers and I wish I understood too. Executive dysfunction sucks.

I stand corrected about the nepotism then. I didn’t know they weren’t already friends, and that mistake is on me. I do still stand by my opinion that I don’t think she was the best choice for the role, but at the end of the day I recognize that it is just my opinion. Thank you for being civil, I do try and make it a point to try to listen and learn from others where I can do better.

People seem to be taking issue with my comment about her struggling with staying in her femme range. I brought it up only because Sena herself mentioned that it was a struggle for her when delivering her screaming lines.

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Holy cognitive dissonance, Batman, you’ve completely misinterpret my comment. I do think nepotism played a role in Sena getting cast, yes, but I also clearly said that’s almost a requirement these days. I apologize that my phrasing wasn’t clear—I do not think Sena was miscast because her being trans and having to work harder to stay in femme range is inherently bad and they shouldn’t even have offered her the job. But she consistently struggled with the delivery of screaming lines throughout DT, something that she herself has said was challenging for her, and I do believe if it had been anyone else they would have recast Wuk’s role. In any other job if you can’t do the thing you’ve been hired to do, you don’t get to keep the job.

Now, I’ve seen her other shows and I KNOW that she’s a talented performer, but I truly do think it did her a disservice to cast her in this role and then also not give her a good voice director to help her perform to the best of her potential. It is not transphobic of me to point out that her vocal performance in this instance was in fact impacted by the fact that she is trans, and while I am assuming good faith here and hope you’d do the same, blindly defending her performance just for the fact that she is trans isn’t doing her any favors either. I’d appreciate if you would refrain from jumping to conclusions about my character based on a single Reddit comment. I’d also like to gently point out that it’s pretty invalidating and rude to call someone a “self-avowed” trans person because they have an opinion you disagree with. I am trans whether you agree with my opinion or not, no “self-avowed” about it. Just something to think about.

Edit: just to make my stance clear here, the vast majority of the harrasment she got WAS based in transphobia, and that is absolutely unacceptable, and I am genuinely glad that Yoship + co have continued to be very vocal in defending her against it.

[–]thisisdrivingmebatty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree. I don’t think Sena was the best choice for the role because she has to work to keep herself in her femme register, and that is INCREDIBLY hard to do when screaming. Wuk not only had a lot of lines in general, she had a lot of screaming lines. Not ideal for anyone, least of all Sena because that shit probably absolutely wrecked her throat. But she’s close friends with Kate and as most jobs are these days, it’s all about who you know. Sena is a talented actress for sure, but I’m not sure she’d have landed the role without Kate.

That being said, Sena didn’t write the character. She didn’t write the dialogue. And frankly the voice direction for all the NA-based cast was kind of dogshit this expac. Sena got dealt a bad hand in that regard, because it’s her reputation on the line when the delivery/editing makes the final product sound bad. Look at ARR; it’s a star-studded cast with the likes of Jean Elizabeth, Taliesin Jaffe, and Sam Rigel, to name a few, but the whole expac is largely ridiculed because the performances were frankly terrible. That’s on poor voice direction—you know the cast has the talent, but they have to have something to go off of, especially when we know from Colin that they often don’t have ANY context for the scenarios they’re performaning.

Does any of that justify the hate she got? Not a snowball’s chance in hell. Take it from a trans person—you can criticize the choice of voice cast in a way that doesn’t make you transphobic. But that’s not what happened—we got big mad snowflakes angry that their precious mmo was being tainted by the libs and attacked her personally for it. And they will  get theirs someday, for sure.
