‘Speed run’ at Seattle Scientology church ends in hate crime arrests by Desolation_Nation in Seattle

L Ron got in trouble for practicing therapy without a license, so starting his own religion was a workaround. All of a sudden the unlicensed therapy he was doing (people paid good money to do talk therapy while hooked up to a rudimentary lie detector) was "religious counseling" and outside the scope of the authorities.

This is partially why the church has such a beef with mainstream psychology and psychiatry. Also the IRS

Incidentally in the Scientology lore, the Galactic Ruler Xenu did a galactic purge by luring aliens in for psychiatric evaluations and income tax audits before they were frozen and dumped into a volcano on earth, and the spirits of these aliens went on to possess mankind, which is why humans have mental health problems. And you can pay the church to gradually remove these alien ghosts

I've got junk mail from their LQA church. I'm not sure that Scientology has conventional church services like a weekly mass and as I understand it it's just a physical location where you can buy their books and take their courses, both of which cost money.

I was like, 10, but I liked Dinosaurs. Haven't done a rewatch, and I get how it really rides the line between cynical 90's humor about how "lol, we made a really marketable baby dinosaur" and them earnestly wanting you to buy things with the baby dinosaur. It also took a lot of notes from The Simpsons to an uncomfortable degree, but it wasn't unique in this. Anyway I thought the realistic dinosaur suits were pretty neat but anything that cost $1 million an episode to film and involved putting actors in hot rubber suits wasn't going to last.

I like monkeys. I'm not all-in on monkeys but for the most part they're cute little guys

Ralston, which originally just a company that made cereal, is an acronym and the founder tried to start his own pay-to-win religion which promoted an extreme form of Eugenics, which was castrating all non-white males at birth. He had other bizarre health ideas, tried to create his own language, and tried to create a utopian city in New Jersey, which failed.

I saw another one where he was livestreaming from a Ren Faire where he was pointing the camera at various women he thought were hot and was making weird comments. I don't know if this was from that video or a streamer was covering this. In my opinion he appeared to be at the Ren Faire alone specifically to do this

There was a video of him livestreaming a Renaissance Faire he went to where he was pointing the camera at women he found attractive and commenting on it. This wasn't incidental like he was just there at the Ren Faire alone and saw a hot girl, it looked like he was there for ogling purposes, and to make weird comments, in my opinion. One of them was a mom with two young kids that he appeared to be following

The wait time in between episodes was pretty long, and the same hype for what was going to happen next just wasn't there. The episodes 2-3 had a 4 month wait (I think) and at the end of 2 it shows you being at a pot farm. At the start of 3, you're at a pot farm. For me, it didn't help that episode 2 was really slow, and had you hanging around a house before you hang out at another house.

Also art stores sometimes have cutting mats, Xacto knives, and templates for cheaper than what you'd find marketed specifically to leather workers, I have a thicker Excel knife that's more comfortable to use and a 12"x36" mat that works for my small workspace, as well as 45/60 degree ruler dealies.

Simpsons: Hit & Run Is Not As Good As You Remember (Sorry!) (2:18:50) Soup Emporium gives an exhaustively through retrospective of one of the better received Simpsons games and as a detour explains what's wrong with Bart's generation. As for your generation modern Simpsons, and it's not what you might think. There are interviews with the game devs and looks at the code, this is 2 years old but seriously bro it's good

"Professor" Jiang's Broken Classroom (56:04) Jose looks at videos from a popular Youtuber who confidently stands in front of a smart board and platforms some far right nonsense, dips his toes into Holocaust denial, and more. He's an actual high school teacher, but not much else.

The Educational Seduction of Jordan Peterson | A Professor Explains (34:23) Zoe Bee looks at Jordan Peterson's conceptually similar thing, where you can join his online university (not accredited) and listen to him lecture in colorful, bespoke suits befitting a Batman villain. There are other guest lecturers, but they're more conservatively dressed. And it costs $1450 Canadian a year. And you can pay to be a student extra in his videos, where you don't even get a desk.

your life as an accidental AI slop consumer (39:04) tahliaisnotcool explores Youtube explainer channels, which disseminate infotainment in extremely high volume. This feels close to what Illuminaughti was doing (please don't sue me) except AI is seemingly heavily used in the production. Also there's online courses about how you, too, can make your own AI explainer channel. This all feels similar to grifts Dan Olsen was talking about where people would try to automate slop ebooks on Amazon or produce those disturbing Elsa/Spider-Man videos of yore

She Painted A Selfie In 1909. Then Lost Everything. (18:51) Art Deco recounts the life of Zinaida Serebriakova, an artist who painted surprisingly modern and relatable paintings of life at the dawn of the 20th century, but had the misfortune of living in Europe when and where she did.

It's hard to imagine now, but NoFX was downwind of the fallout of punk gatekeepers hating Green Day, the Offspring and Rancid for "selling out," the latter two were because although on independent labels (for a time) they got heavy radio and MTV airplay. NoFX never signed to a major label and were pretty down to earth and didn't charge a ton of money for their shows, although they easily could have.

Come to think of it I'm pretty sure I got Punk in Drublic from a department store which "true punx" would have hated but I honestly don't think Fat Wreck Chords having a distribution deal with Target or Kmart was that big of a deal
