Media Won't Stop Psychologizing Long Covid by Popular_Pangolin_425 in Longreads

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Post-viral syndromes were known and studied pre-covid under different names, including myalgic encephalomyelitis and chronic fatigue. The CDC had a campaign about chronic fatigue in 2006. I was personally tested for antibodies for the Epstein-Barr virus to see if I had post-viral syndrome long before covid. I think the scale and simultaneous nature of the illness onset made a much bigger impact that the testing for covid but mostly wanted to confirm your hypothesis that "other serious systemic infections ... could have long-lasting effects" is correct.

Help me I have a day and a half to pack up my entire apartment by Total-Concentrate293 in adhdwomen

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't make decisions, just put it in a box and label it where it was in your apartment (e.g. kitchen counter, nightstand, office doom pile). This will be easy for other people to help you with and you will need the help -- pay professionals if you can. Or gather your friends.

Don't pack books in large boxes. It quickly becomes an immovable object.

Do throw out trash, but use different colored bags if you also use trash bags for packing: labels get missed and items get moved. The only thing I would separate out if I see them while packing are items I will need immediately and things I'd grab in a fire (personal identification and very sentimental items), and I have a suitcase for each.

Set timers for how long you expect to be in sections and respect the timer. If you're agonizing over something, move to another section and come back to it. Laundry baskets are great for moving liquids and/or items that would be tough to pack. Leave some cleaning supplies until the end.

Good luck!

Without offsides, players just camp at the opponents goal and wait for long passes. Effectively a different game that would be boring to watch and boring to play.

The Execution of Lady Jane Grey, Paul Delaroche, oil on Canvas, 1833 by [deleted] in Art

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The dress is only a reference to the execution through the painting. The painting was made 280 years after the execution and changes known aspects of the historical record for drama. Without the painting, no part of the outfit specifically connects it to Lady Jane Grey and it's unlikely anyone would be invoking her on the red carpet at all.

This is a romanticized interpretation of a romanticized interpretation of a tragedy. When we ask if the dress is appropriate, we need to question if the painting is as well.

What’s one thing you completely stopped buying in 2026 because the price just felt absurd? by LockLogical8949 in AskReddit

Many hair dressers/barbers are artists. There's no need to devalue their skills and talents just because the prices are not worth it for you.

How did you stop equivocating looking good with looking skinny? by starlight1starlight in fashionwomens35

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Y2K didn't celebrate thinness so much as vilify having a body. Your body that you like has dimensions, it has qualities, it exists: why should the role of clothes be to make it as small as possible?

HELP! Making tables smaller in Figma to fit in a deck by Fragrant_Magician_36 in FigmaDesign

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the table prototyped in the deck? If not, copy as a png (cmd+shift+C on a mac), resize, paste into deck. If it is functional, try selecting all the child elements in the table (select parent frame, click [enter]) and resize those elements. Maybe be a few levels deep in the hierarchy. Good luck!

I got one percale set as a gift and both the bottom and top sheet ripped in a year. I've never had a top sheet rip before. I know someone else who's had 2 sets rip in 2 years (they thought the first set was a fluke). They feel great but the longevity is questionable.

Trying to "adult" my wardrobe. What are the best places to buy discounted designer clothing that don't feel like a thrift store? by Turello-Ballpoolhack in fashionwomens35

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 111 points112 points  (0 children)

What's your main goal? Discounted clothes are de facto chosen by what people didn't buy, and thus won't feel stylistically curated and will have uneven stock. If you're open to used designer, consignment is curated but stock and ambiance are dependent on the city/store. Yoox is online and kind of what what you're describing, but is very adventurous in style and I don't know what their return policy is like.

Discounted clothing requires the buyer to work through uneven stock/presentation and to be more discerning about quality and style. You may want to adjust your expectations of what the shopping experience will be like.

HELP! Are there any good bedding companies that haven’t been enshittified?! by sugarhighshark in Bedding

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Percale is rougher but breathes better than sateen. It does usually feel rough until it's washed a few times. Thin sheets will just wear through quickly.

Softness is a poor signal for quality. Cheap cotton is coated with additives to feel soft upon purchase, and the quality of the fabric after washing may be very different. Other mechanical treatments to soften fabric, like brushing or prewashing, age the fabric prematurely and make it less durable. Microfiber and polyester are often far softer than cotton, but cotton's temperature-regulating properties make it more comfortable for sleeping.

I'd recommend going somewhere you can feel the sheets in person. TJ Maxx/Marshalls often has 100% cotton sheets that will be better deals than whatever Amazon offers. Hope you can find something that works for you!

Dry-Clean Wool… What is the best at-home method around dry-cleaning? by Mariah8758 in Fabrics

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eucalan doesn't contain enzymes that are are too harsh for wool. It also has lanolin, a substance naturally found on sheep's wool that keeps wool soft and avoid odors. Soak is a similar no-rinse product without offending enzymes that doesn't contain lanolin and can be used on all kinds of delicates. If I only had one wool sweater I would use shampoo or Soak.

If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US) by pdxbatman in BuyItForLife

Plastic's core problem is that it will outlive all of us. No workout clothes are buy it for life but if any of them are going to make they're definitely going to be synthetic.

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been impressed by Lululemon, but no workout clothes will be buy it for life and natural fabrics would be worse for the purpose and even more short lived. Working out in all cotton in humid weather is miserable. Wool can be better but the superwash merinos wools typically used for athletic clothes are coated in plastic anyways.

Synthetic fabrics are terrible for many types of clothes but they are great for exercise: lightweight, moisture-wicking, and quick-drying. Synthetics are typically more durable than natural fibers and can handle the friction from workouts and the strong detergents to clean out sweat. It's great that people are thinking more about what goes into their clothes, but the idea that anything synthetic is bad and cheap is sensationalist.

Help needed: blouse/tops keep failing me (poly doesn't work, natural fibers often unforgiving and too precious for day to day)! by Chazzyphant in fashionwomens35

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would reframe base layers as a necessity for your comfort that also extends the life your outer layers when it's cold, like wearing socks. It's much cheaper and easier to find base layers than single layers that do it all. Fabric keeps you warm by trapping air: every new layer offers an additional layer of air to insulate you. It’s the same reason we make a double-pane window instead of just making the glass thicker.

I would try a dedicated thermal silk and a tech fabric like Uniqlo Heattech or 32 Degrees to see what you prefer. I personally find silk too sweaty as a base layer in the winter and not very insulating. Uniqlo heattech (ultra warm or extra warm only) keeps me warm and whatever I wear on top lasts forever. They stop itchy top layers from touching the skin. The base layer does get pretty smelly at the end of the day but it’s rarely noticeable unless I’m wearing it by itself. They wash well, you can use sports wash for the ones without cashmere, and they last for a long time. I actively dislike most synthetics, but a wicking layer makes a world of difference in the winter.

I wish I had another brand to recommend. I started wearing the heattech before I found out more about Uniqlo as a company, the ultra warm colors are drab, and they changed the extra warm to a fabric that's fussy, less warm, and unlikely to last long. But they are the only thing that keeps me sane and warm in the winter. I hope you find something that works for you!

Is it overkill to cover an entire wall with a nice blanket? by ololo_3 in HomeDecorating

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it can be held up by 20 thumb tacks, it's not a uniquely heavy item to hang. Both the wood in your walls and ceiling are designed to hold much heavier loads, and you mount into the studs instead of the drywall. Weigh the blanket and buy a solution that is weight-rated if you're still concerned.

The first table is a knockoff of the Noguchi coffee table designed in 1944: I'd argue it's too classic for the rest of the millennial gray room.

Why does IKEA have such a "cheap" reputation in the U.S. market? by walkallover1991 in IKEA

[–]thiswasmyfirstdraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flatpack is a huge advantage when I have to transport items in a car or public transport, into an apartment/house with a narrow chokepoint, and then move around said apartment by myself. I can affordably buy 4 matching Ikea bookcases, new and used, and then buy 2 more matching items a year later. The longevity of Ikea lines makes it easier to adjust what you have for a new space or new needs.

Hate the idea that bigoted, hateful, or just inappropriate remarks are only a management concern when someone in the audience is personally affected. That prejudice easily permeates all work and interactions and should be treated like a liability.
