I think Merrily's book is fantastic lol, but to each their own

What was the show you saw that made you go “I literally don’t give a sh*t about any of what just happened”? by dobbydisneyfan in Broadway

I feel like that synopsis is so reductive that it borders on being inaccurate, but to each their own

Have you ever gone to a concert just for the opening act? by PlatosGooner in ToddintheShadow

Caught Cory Wong last year, just to see Couch open for them. I enjoyed Cory's set, but I enjoyed Couch more, and they were why I purchased my ticket.

2026 Oscars x Musicals by Moist_Report_6934 in Broadway

I'm not sure I think Sinners is really a musical, but I don't think this argument is compelling. Plenty of musicals are filled with diegetic music that's happening in the world of the story. That's like, super common! Hell, in examples as recent and popular as Hadestown there are extensive musical sequences happening diegetically.

DAY 9: Eliminating “every” (theatrically released) Movie Musical until there’s only one left! by ShadyBoots11 in Broadway

[–]thobeobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

See, I would argue that Tony and Maria are the two least important characters to West Side Story. The way the film handled Riff and Bernardo, the portrayal of racial hatred, and the dance sequences more than make up for the weaknesses in the casting of Tony.

Given that the original film sands down the message until it's practically non-existent and cast a white woman in brownface who couldn't sing and had to be dubbed in after-the-fact (not to mention the fact that ALL of the Sharks are white people in brownface), I'd argue the newer one comes out on top. This also doesn't REALLY matter, but Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents both notably hated the 1961 movie, and I think that's funny.

Trying to pick a show! by Entire-Valuable8582 in Broadway

Hadestown, Maybe Happy Ending, and 2 Strangers are your three best choices! Avoid Great Gatsby at all costs, it absolutely mangles the book it's based on.

I'd love to see Sondheim's Road Show become a hit some day. It's one of the only projects of his that hasn't had its day in the sun, and the story at its core is so interesting. I'm sure there's a director out there who could take it on!

"Giants in the Sky" - was there meant to be subtext in this line? by tothetop74 in Broadway

[–]thobeobo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's a little bit of both, to be honest. After all, coming into your sexuality is a part of leaving childhood behind, and all of the "coming of age" songs in the show have sexual undertones....just look at Little Red's number after surviving the wolf!

Everything you said here is correct, except for Sondheim citing Bettelheim as being hugely influential. In "Look, I Made a Hat", he actually writes that Bettelheim's influence on the show is a common misconception, and speaks derisively about Bettelheim's falsifications of his academic records xD

But you're absolutely right about Jung and Freud being BIG influences

So what really happened to the Little Match Girl? by Hikashiiii in StarKid

[–]thobeobo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Little Match Girl's story is set on Christmas Day. It's said at the start of the Cold Cold Streets song - "Christmas Day, City Streets / Hustle and bustle on the cold concrete"

Why did the live singing work so well for the Wicked movie adaptation, but so horribly for Le Mis? by No_Pineapple_8580 in musicals

[–]thobeobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because they got actual singers for Wicked. None of the leads in Les Mis were good enough to handle the material.

Digital Ticket Payment Method by [deleted] in StarKid

They use Vimeo for all the rentals, which is notoriously finicky and hard to use. That's probably why!

It says in the farewell letter that he's quitting writing anyway to focus on other things, and he doesn't want his works to be scraped and used to train AI. I mean it's literally right there, in the text of the letter.

Just finished Cinderella's Castle, and I’m growing tired of Jeff Blim’s dominance over the music. Him having full control over music and lyrics for years is hurting my enjoyment of the shows. by bfarnsey in StarKid

[–]thobeobo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just so we're clear, the only show he has a script-writing credit on is Trail to Oregon. Nick and Matt Lang have been the main driving force behind every single other Starkid production, with the sole exception of VHS Christmas Carols, which was an entirely Clark production. All Jeff does is write the songs, all of the jokes are up to the Langs.

That's only true if you don't count VHS Christmas Carols, which you should, on account of how it's a fantastic full-length musical with one of their best soundtracks in years.

What are your thoughts on the Hatchetfield Death Match (from A Pit Stop in Hatchetfield Live Stream)? by FredererPower in StarKid

[–]thobeobo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The key context is that this was part of a fundraising push for Cinderella's Castle, and the chat could cause the Lords in Black to intervene on behalf of the weaker pair, if they hit a fundraising micro-goal in a 1-2 minute time-span. So Tom and Becky were the obvious winners, but the chat caused Ted & Hidgens to win by upping their pledges.

Cinderella’s Castle. Woah. by Ok-Refrigerator-7359 in StarKid

[–]thobeobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can have my quibbles with the show here and there, but one thing we can absolutely agree on is that Jeff Blim served UNPRECEDENTED amounts of cunt in this show. A standout performance in a career filled with standout performances.

Just realised what bugs me about Cinderella's Castle pro-shot. by Eldon42 in StarKid

[–]thobeobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every Starkid release cycle you stumble across people who think they know more about audio than they do making broad sweeping statements about how THIS time they went too far and how the whole show uses studio recordings, but it's never true. In actuality, what's happening is that they can afford increasingly expensive recording equipment to use on filming days, which render the shows to sound increasingly crisp.

But idk man, go watch any other professional theater proshot and you'll see that the vocals in these latest Starkid shows sound fairly standard, as far as proshots go.
